Leafleting is the distribution by hand of leaflets through letter boxes in residential areas. The basic idea is to take the message of your business direct to potential customers, and literally, put it in their hands.



Most of us see leaflets come through our letter boxes several times a week: from the local pizza delivery outlet to furniture polishers.



Businesses that send out leaflets in this way are, of course, trying to generate more business, and this is a fairly straightforward way of reaching the local population. So, does leafleting work?

There is little doubt that a leaflet is going to have a much better chance of being acted upon if there is some sort of offer involved. Some sort of voucher will often make a potential customer keep the leaflet for future use, and keep it until it is needed. Offers have to be worthwhile, of course! Search engine optimisation is not an exact science so a lot of the information you will encounter will be based on observations that the SEO community have made. Below are just a small selection of good SEO resources for tips and the latest news.



I could start by mentioning all the great website that exist that contain great nuggets of information on search engine optimisation, however a lot of this information is not from an official source so can not be fully trusted. For that reason I would always recommend you search out the official blogs and forums of the search engines. Another great place to find information is from the personal blogs of people who actually work for the search engines. The most famous one these would be Matt Cutt’s website. He regularly offers information and tips on search engine optimisation and how to make your website more SEO friendly.



Getting back to forums the official Google forum is a good place to find and ask for information as the replies are usually from Google employees so you can be assured that the advice given is of good quality.



This advice is really only going to be useful if you are planning to optimise your website yourself or you are planning a career in SEO. This is not a good strategy if you want to learn about SEO to optimise your website yourself. It would be much more cost-effective for you to hire a professional search engine optimisation company to do the work correctly for you. The big Bank bailout: The government decided to bail the banks out that where in debt and offer loans to struggling banks and in some cases even bought the bank to save them going under. I think we would have been in a worse state if this had not happened. If you want my tip put your money in Northern Rock.



Interest Rate: Although the Government was not directly responsible for the low interest rates we have at the moment, as the Bank of England sets the interest rates. I’m sure the Government had a hand in it. This may good news for people with mortgages however not so good if you have savings.



Recently the government has started to offer insurance to the banks when people’s houses get repossessed. This is to try and encourage banks to give out more mortgages and reduce the risk to the banks. I’m sure this will not please everyone as the government plans to use the tax payer’s money to fund this.



It all comes down to the banks and they are mostly to blame for the recession as they made bad investment decisions which lost them billions of pounds. They were offering such large bonuses to get the business in, they never though whether they were good investment or not. What also brought further injury were the American banks giving loans to people with bad credit.

This situation will not improve until the banks have the confidence to start lending to each other again and the government has implemented many initiatives to create the confidence needed for this to happen. However a recent statement by the Association of Residential Letting saying that they think that now is not the time for landlords to consider selling up. As people will always need a place to live and with property value at a low it would not be sensible to sell now. The largest problem facing landlords in 2009 is rent areas with some people being unable to make their rent payments due to the recession. One of the reasons that people would be unable to pay their rent is the threat of redundancy. One solution to this problem is for landlords to take out rental protection insurance to combat the risk of tenants who go into arrears. The insurance can only be taken out if the tenant is not already into arrears so taking the insurance out at the start can be a good strategy although the insurance can be taken out in the middle of an agreement, again as long as the tenant isn’t in arrears.



The residential letting association went on to say the buy-to-let mortgage market will be for the most part unchanged in 2009 which may come as a relieve to some landlords who were thinking that the market would get worse in 2009. However landlords may have trouble get new mortgages if their equity is low and may face higher interest rates.



It is estimated on average house prices will fall in 2009 by 15% although this fall will not be consistent throughout the UK, London is expected to take the biggest fall. There may be some more reduction in rental cost throughout 2009, however there is expected to be some increases as well.

According to Haart this seems to be true as the managing director said that affordability has greatly improved in the housing market. Although you would expect the company to making these claims as they would like to sell more houses. It is said that the interest in buying a home has increased. This is due to the fact that the interest rate is so low, the lowest in history. The reason the interest rate is so low is because the Bank of England want people to start buying homes, unfortunately though the banks are still reluctant to give people mortgages. If the banks would start to leant and this does also include to each other this will go a long way to improve things.



It would seem that The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) would agree with Haart as they have recently recorded statistics to back up this claim. Rics also said that house prices were seeing signs that average house prices were returning to levels seen three years ago. First time buyers seem to be in the best position to take advantage of this increase.



For this to happen though buyer confidence needs to return to normal and to do this there needs to be ready available affordable mortgages, again we need to turn back to the bank to kick start this.



Rics has called on the government to do more to help solve this problem one of the things they suggest is for the government to offer residential mortgage backed securities.



However the rental market has increased a recent announcement by Grant management stated that occupancy level where high for rental Property, they supply flats to rent in Edinburgh and also Houses to rent in Liverpool.



I don’t think things will be solved this year, hopefully though by the end of this year we will see some big signs that the trend is turning to an upward one. I believe the banks will play a major part in this and until they start lending and the have confidence in doing so this problem won’t be solved.

1. Google only Counts the first 100 links on a webpage: A few years ago people noticed that only about 100 links’ on a webpage where being counted by Google. So they thought that Google didn’t like webpage’s that had over 100 links on a webpage. This was true but the reason for this was that Google stopped caching the page after a certain amount of kilobytes. So any links that were after the cut of point were not being counted, Google has now increased the size of the cache due to larger WebPages in modern websites. I would say that 100 links in any webpage is too many just for a usability standpoint.



2. Links from other websites can harm yours: This is another myth if this was the case if would be easy for your competitors to add a link to spammy websites to make your website suffer. Only websites that you are linking to can harm you, more on that in a moment.



3. Having External links in your website are bad: People used to think that it was bad to have too many external links on a webpage as this will dilute your strength as its better to have incoming links and not external links. This can be true if you are linking to bad website neighbourhoods. However Google has stated that if you are linking to authority websites that are related to the content to your website and will add visitor value then this can be good. As this shows that you know what you are talking about.



4. Links form high Pagerank websites are best: This is a myth this is only really beneficial to website that are already have a high PageRank. It is uncommon to find a high PageRank website linking to a PageRank 2 it just looks unnatural. If you are looking for links you should not be concerned about PageRank you should look for WebPages that are relevant to your content and that the visitors will find valuable. 5. Reviews and ratings



One a selected few test bed sites Google is testing returning underneath the descriptions of listings in the organic results a star rating for products and information on how many reviews the product has. This is just showing in the USA and only on a selected few Google accounts. This will only appear on products on an ecommerce store. I think this is a good idea and I hope to see this more widely used.



Page Links



I’m sure you will have seen site links if your website is lucky enough to have them they are links that are placed below your listings if your webpage is number one in Google for a keyphrase (usually your company name). Google is now testing page links which is a link in the description of an organic listing. This link is based on anchors placed in the WebPages content usually used for long webpage that can link to a particular part of your page. I am undecided about this one as of yet because if you have never visited the page how do you know this is the part on the page you want to see? This will depend on how relevant to the search these links will be. As I have said these are just tests and they may never come into general use.



Misspellings



This one you may have noticed as it is now showing in all results. We all have done it miss typed a word into Google and it returns “did you mean this” along with the results for the miss spellings. Well Google now shows you the top two results for the correct spelling. This is quiet helpful and I’m sure it reduces the amount of search queries performed.
