Bounce Rate is a web analytics term that defines how many people visit a page, and then leave that page without going anywhere else on your site. If someone lands on one of your pages and subsequently exits, that's considered a bounce. If they hit another page on your site, it isn't. The lower your Bounce Rate, the better. It could mean more people are exploring your site. Simple enough?

From Wikipedia:

A bounce occurs when a web site visitor leaves a page or a site without visiting any other pages before a specified session-timeout occurs. There is no industry-standard minimum or maximum time by which a visitor must leave in order for a bounce to occur. Rather, this is determined by the session timeout of the analytics tracking software.

I've been asked this question a lot lately because Google Analytics has been featuring Bounce Rate a little more prominently in their statistics. And naturally the question following is “is mine good or bad?” or “how can I improve it?

What is a good Bounce Rate?

This is a difficult question to answer without generalization. My answer is usually roughly between 20 and 30 percent is a good target range. There are many factors to consider, a big one is of course they type of page you're measuring. If you are measuring the Bounce Rate off an entry page, and your rate is 25%, that means 75% of the people who land on it (through ads, SEO or however) are continuing on through your site. If it is a “click here to purchase” page you'll be the luckiest salesperson alive if 75% of the people who read the page continue to a purchase page (not impossible, but very unlikely). So it depends on the type of page. For an entry page, or a content page you should focus on the 20%-30% range for best results. I've seen rates as low as 15%, but they aren't common.

Keep in mind some sites like news sites will naturally have a higher Bounce Rate, because people tend to scan headlines, or read an article, and head off to the next site. A site like this one (JeremyMorgan.com) is more of a niche oriented type of article, and I tend to run in the 30-35% range, which is decent for an article site. How-to sites may also suffer from high Bounce Rates, as people find what they were looking for, and exit to use the information.

What causes a high Bounce Rate?

One big thing of course is irrelevant content. If your content isn't what the person searching was looking for, they likely won't search your site for it, they simply move on. If you're using deceptive tactics to get search results or clicks, you can expect a higher Bounce Rate. Also as I said earlier, “how to” type sites generally run a little higher, because of the focus of what people are looking for.

Side note: in my experience submitting your sites to social media outlets like Digg, Reddit and Stumbleupon increase your Bounce Rates. Not because they send bad traffic, but because of the nature of the audience. They tend to be more “hit and run” type visitors. They scan your page, and immediately move on to the next link. This is especially true with stumbleupon because their users simply need to hit the stumble button to move on the next site.

Should I care about Bounce Rate?

In a general sense, you should pay attention to any kind of analytic data you can get to your site. but for most sites you shouldn't invest a large amount of time and money on Bounce Rate until you've locked down bigger issues like conversions or bookmarking rates. In other words, keep it on the list of things to monitor and change, but don't stress yourself out about it unless you find an 80% Bounce Rate somewhere. Once you have increased your conversion ratios, bookmarks, and things like that you can start tuning your Bounce Rate. If you run an e commerce site you should pay attention more closely than you would a news site.

How can I lower my Bounce Rate?

The best way to lower your Bounce Rate is to make your content good, and relevant. Write good headlines, and provide people the content they were searching for. Don't try to gather extra clicks or search results with irrelevant terms. There are a lot of articles you can find on the internet about improving your bounce rate. Good luck!

Making Landing Pages Work for You

I never forget the first time I mention a landing page to client. Their first response is "a what?". I ask where their current ads are pointing to, and I usually get the same response, the home page. In fact, nearly all of the SEM clients I've dealt with have started out with google ads pointed right at their homepage. While this might make perfect sense at the time, in most cases it's a poor choice. I'll explain why.

What is a Landing Page?

The first question you might have is simple to answer. A landing page is a page specially designed to send advertising traffic to. They are individual ads created just for the targeted customer. Rather than dump them directly to the homepage, you send them a targeted page that is meant to sell them a specific service or product.

Why do I need Landing Pages?

The reason you need landing pages is because you want to sell something. It's all about targeting, and the right landing page targets your service or product. If you sell 100 different products, does it make sense to send all your potential clients to the homepage, and expect them to find what they want? You want to create specific ads for a specific product or service, then target that landing page for it, so you cut out a lot of confusion and give the visitor what they're looking for.

What makes a good landing page?

Here are some things that make a good landing page. A combination of all of these will help your conversions in a major way.

1. Make it targeted. - Make sure your landing page is set to talk about a specific niche, product or service. Dont try to put all your eggs in one basket. Make a page for each thing you're trying to sell, and don't tie them together. Make sure the information on the page matches what you put in your ad.

2. Keep it simple - The more cluttered your page is, and the more text there is, the less likely someone will stay on the page. Don't make it so simple that it doesn't catch attention, but make it as simple as you can. The less there is to read, the better off you are.

3. Make it flashy - This is the one I have the hardest time talking people into. Make your colors vivid, and make the product photos stand out. You know those really cheesy pages you see sometimes with bright red fonts and huge headlines? They are prevalent for a reason.

4. Make the call to action clear - Make sure there is no way to miss the link you want them to click. If you want them to click through and read something, or buy something, you have to make it big, and clear. "Click here to purchase now" is a good one, or "click here to learn more". Make sure it's clear, large and noticeable.

5. Make the buttons bigger. - Studies have shown that action buttons are more effective when they are larger. While this might look a little tacky, the bigger the button, the better the clicks. Try not to make it too large, but don't hide it either.

6. Show off your product - When people see something in action, they're more likely to buy it. Studies have shown that if you show something to someone, they are more likely to buy, and the web is no different.

7. Have a clear message - This is a lot like #1 and 4, but make sure your message is clear. Your message should be: buy my product or service because you need it.

8. Talk about the customer, not your company. - Everyone loves to talk about themselves. Your customers are no different. Always replace phrases talking about "us" or "our company" with phrases that contain "you" and "your company". Make it feel like it's directed at them.

9. Keep branding in mind - While you want to keep it simple and targeted, don't forget branding. 90% or more of your visitors wont be buying anything, but make sure they see your company name and logo. If they see it enough, it will stick, and maybe they'll come looking for you later.

10. Test everything - Make sure and test your landing pages. Test views vs clicks, conversions and anything else you can within your means. Using google analytics is a good way to test conversion goals, and work towards that.

Using this information, you should be able to create decent landing pages and toy with them. Remember, this is a process that requires a lot of testing and tuning, and it's by no means a one time thing. It's an ongoing process. Just by creating a few good landing pages, you could be getting a lot more bang for your advertising buck.

--

Jeremy Morgan is a Portland Web Design Expert and runs a SEO blog in his spare time.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

You know you need inbound links to your site to succeed in SEO. What you may not know is, you don't need to spend a dime to get them. In fact, I would advise you not to purchase links.

The recent Google shakeup is all about paid links. Stop paying for links now! Google is now "punishing" websites for having paid links, because they feel it's cheating the algorithm. You might be upset by this, but they are doing it to improve the quality of their results. Here is how you can take advantage of it.

Google is moving towards algorithms that favor sites that are "naturally" linked to. What is "natural" linking? These are links that a webmaster put up because he or she wanted to, not because they were paid to. They saw something they liked, and put a link to it. This means all those shady SEOs who were buying links up by the hundreds can't cheat good sites out of the rankings anymore. So how you do get natural links?

Focus on your subject.

There is a saying in marketing, if you market to everyone, you are marketing to no one. Maintain your focus, and keep your content within your niche. Don't try to spread yourself too thin.

I personally have been guilty of this sin in the past. At one time JeremyMorgan.com had SEO articles, PHP scripts, Ford Mustang News and photoshop tutorials, and pictures of my family and locations back home. Needless to say I didn't really dominate any of those niches. Focus your efforts, and try to stay on topic.

Give them something to link to.

Once you find your focus, provide content that others in your niche want to link to. It's really that simple. Think to yourself, "are people going to want to link to this?". As much as I think my speculations and opinions on industry trends are great, the reality is most people link to articles I write that actually tell you how to do something. If you really want to build links, give them something helpful or really interesting to link to.

Even pages that you cannot easily monetize. The more links you get, the better.

Join the community.

In 2008, they have a community for almost anything. Get involved in those communities, sign up for forums and comment on posts. Become an authority. Just by being helpful to others and bringing information to a community, people will link to your site out of respect, knowing that their audience will appreciate the link. Be honest, helpful, and maintain your integrity on the boards. Instead of making fun of that newbie, help them out.

Look for places with high quality links.

Don't be afraid to ask to exchange links with others who might benefite from your service. Links from sites like your local library or community-centric pages go a long ways. Even your employer may put up a link (be careful not to mess that one up!).

Get Deep Links

Deep links are very important. Try to get links pointing towards inner pages of your site rather than the front page. With enough of these types of links, you can dominate some of the serps related to that topic, as well as build your overall quality.

Write Articles.

Chances are, you're reading this article on somewhere other than JeremyMorgan.com or Webfoot Central. That's because I submit articles all over the internet. Not only do you help build backlinks, but you contribute to your community, and make a name for yourself. Don't write spammy articles, or try to advertise too hard. Make something useful that others will want as content on their own site.

Issue Press Releases.

I can't really comment on this one too much, because I've never done it, but for some sites it's a very useful tool for getting inbound links, and good publicity. Make sure you have something going on that's worth talking about!

Blog, Blog, Blog

Every site needs a blog. Even if your site is primarily about selling widgets, have a widget news related blog. Individual articles will get people linking to them, and will keep your site fresh and add content, which google and other search engines love.

If you must, sponsor some links.

There are a few sponsored links worth getting. Yahoo Search Inclusion is one example. If you are in a highly competitive industry, such as adult, SEO, mortgage, finance, or gambling you will need to purchase links to get an edge. There are a lot of people competing for your terms.

Conclusion

Use common sense. The best way to get ahead is by being honest, and providing a decent service. Stop trying gimmicks or tricks to cheat your way into good rankings. The best long term SEO plan involves taking the high road and doing things honestly. Check out the SEO book to see what I learned about ethical SEO. Now I don't have any problems getting people to my website. You can too, all it takes is a little effort!

--

Jeremy Morgan is a Portland SEO who frequently blogs about SEO and how to make money online.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

The Secret Ingredient
Do you know one of those people who "just has it"? You know the type, they can be a guy or a girl who is very average looking, not rich or famous, yet always seems to have the attention of the opposite sex. Do you know what they have that others don't? Confidence. As we all know, confidence is the ultimate aphrodisiac.
So how do you increase your own confidence? It's very simple actually. First off, you need to love yourself. If you don't love yourself, how do you expect others to love you? Change your attitude today, as in right now. Instead of bombarding your head with negative thoughts, start thinking positively. Every time a negative thought pops in your head, banish it immediately. Start thinking about all the positive qualities you have.
A fast way to improve confidence.
As an excersize, take a pen and paper and write down all the positive things about yourself. Come up with as much as you can. Are you nice? Are you attractive, smart, or funny? Anything you can think of that anyone has ever complimented you on, write it down. Even if you don't agree with them. Come up with list of great things, and keep it in your purse, or on the nightstand. Add to it whenever something comes to mind. Every day, read it to yourself at least once. Read this list until you are absolutely sick of reading it.
Soon, you'll have that list memorized, and you won't even need to look at it to know what it says. And you know what else? Your subconcious will have it memorized as well. Studies have proven the power of the subconcious mind, and it's vast potential for self improvement. By telling yourself these positive things every day, you'll notice a difference rather quick.
Be proud of yourself.
The next step is giving yourself something to be proud of. What are you good at? What do you like to do? No matter what it is, anything from snowboarding to knitting, think about ways you can make yourself better at it. Set goals, preferably small goals, and focus on achieving them. If you play the guitar, set out to learn a song and learn it. Improve upon these skills constantly until you've mastered it.
You might be asking, what in the heck does this have to do with dating? It's completely relevant. When you are good at something, anything, you become more confident. When you improve yourself, and you are good at something, you carry that with you throughout the day. You begin to slowly love yourself more, and become more confident, and it shows. Not to mention it's a good conversation starter. Which brings me to the next step, conversation!
Conversation Fuel.
In order to have conversations with others, you have to have something to talk about. Take some time to think about something you're really interested, and learn something about it. Go down to the library or hit the internet and pick up a few things about it when you're bored. Become an "expert" on something and talk about it. Everyone is impressed by knowledge. You don't have to be an acedemic to be able to hold a conversation about a subject.
Also, subscribe to the newspaper, and read about current events. Newspapers are varied enough that there has to be something of interest in there for you. This gives you something to talk about at parties and social events. Again it doesn't take much to hold a conversation.
When engaged in conversation, become interested in the other person. Really listen to what they have to say. Everyone loves talking about themselves. Use their name frequently also, nothing sounds sweeter to someone than their own name. Becoming a better conversationalist will build your confidence.
Appearance.
Ok, you knew this one was coming. Looks aren't everything, but they're a great asset to have. We can't all be movie star hot, but there are things anyone can do to make themselves hotter. The first thing:
Smile. You never can smile too much. Smiling is contagious, and if you're always smiling, and the other person is smiling, it creates an instant bond, and a clear indicator that the date is going well. Smiling tends to affect your mood also, so smiling more just might make you happier.
Take care of yourself. This one is very important. Make sure your clothes are clean, you are showered and shaved, with brushed hair and teeth at all times. Sure, you might feel lazy in the morning and skip the shower, then run to the store really quick. But while you're out you will feel like everyone knows you didn't take a shower, and everyone knows you stink. You wouldn't go out on a date this way right?
Anytime you are showered, clean with brushed teeth and good breath your confidence is higher. And thats what we're shooting for.
Excersize. Did you know that just by simply taking a walk every day, you can lose as much weight as someone who runs a few times a week? It's true, by elevating your heart rate and working your muscles you are burning calories. And doing it every day improves your metabolism. Losing a few pounds always adds to your confidence level.
Try new styles. Try doing your hair different, or dressing a little different, and see the response. A new look is a great way to build up your confidence, especially if it really works for you. Don't be afraid to try new things.
Conclusion
In the end, what really matters overall is what you think of yourself. Learn to love yourself. This doesn't mean you should turn into an egomaniac, it just means you like who you are, and are ok with yourself. This goes a very long way towards building your own confidence. And when you're confident, you're sexy. This will help you attract more people than you ever imagined.

--
Jeremy Morgan is a an author who writes articles about dating, and runs a
free online dating site for fun.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Are SEO services unethical? Many people think so.

There are a lot of Anti-SEOs out there who love to write about what a scam SEO is, and how the service is evil and should be abolished. One of their key points is: SEO is cheating. They say by manipulating rankings, you're being dishonest and beating out the competition by cheating.

This is an interesting dilemma, as they make a good point. I say that as an SEO myself. Sometimes really bad websites who have no business being in the top ten, often are. The reason is not because their site is so great, or because so many people go there, but because they had a great SEO. Often times, the more you pay, the better you get, and some people are willing to throw a lot of money at someone to get them the top rankings.

The argument is, from a competition standpoint, results rely on who has the best SEO. So if a bunch of poor quality sites manage to get the right SEO to help them, they will start burying the good sites that people actually want to go to. This seems unethical and unfair. This is the primary reason google and other large search engines put anti-seo measures in place, because it reflects poorly on the search engine when these useless sites are near the top.

The counter argument is simply a matter of who you hire. An ethical SEO will never tell you to "cheat" because they know that their site may be penalized if the search engines figure it out. Also a good SEO will encourage the webmaster to put up great content, and make the site great. Thats the method used by the more ethical and professional SEOs. They encourage you to build a website people actually want to link to.

Because people are often business owners or webmasters, and not marketing experts, the advice given by a good SEO can be worth every penny, as they specialize in marketing websites, and have a good amount of knowledge to bring the customer. So thats the service they are truly providing, rather than promising high rankings.

In the end it all comes down to ethics. A good SEO is no more than a marketing expert paid to optimize your site to get maximum exposure to search engines and give you guidance in creating a great website. An unethical SEO will "cheat" the system and create the scenarios explained above. These are the people the "anti-SEO" types are talking about.

--
Jeremy Morgan is a Portland SEO and internet marketer.
So, you got yourself a new website set up and you want to be at the bottom of the "shower head" search results. This may not get you banned altogether, but it will at least get your site deranked enough that new visitors will stop bothering you.

1. Build hundreds of pages with the same content.

Build as many pages as you can, with basically the same content. Build one for "shower heads in Oregon", then build another for "shower heads in California". Build one for every state, and all the big cities in that state. Doing this should get your site banned in a month or two if you do it right.
2. Buy 145 domains, and point them all at the same site.

Another old SEO trick that works well. Since you are selling shower heads, you should get:

shower-heads.com

buy-shower-heads.com

where-to-buy-shower-heads.com

where-to-find-free-shower-heads.com

You get the idea. Build up enough of these and submit them all to google and yahoo, so they can index them and properly punish your site.
3. Keep your keyword density as high as possible.

Who cares what the text sounds like, keep it optimized. Here is an example of BAD text:

"At Jeremy's Shower heads, we have many name brand shower heads to choose from, and you can order online".

That almost sounds like something a human would say. Try this:

"At Jeremy's Shower Heads, we have the most shower heads out of any shower heads manufacturer, or shower heads dealer. Come check out our shower heads store and look at all our shower heads and shower heads supplies we have available. Need more shower heads, or a special shower head? We can special order shower heads too."

Not only do you have more text, but we have 15.5% keyword density for "shower heads". That should be enough to trip the spam filter in most major engines. If it doesnt, try adding "shower heads" into random spots in the paragraph.
4. Spam your links in wordpress or other blog comments.

Nothing says "crappy spam site" more, and if you do this enough, the search engines will notice. Since very few people probably click those links anyway, you wont have any new visitors bothering you either.
5. Join as many link exchanges as possible.

Try to get as many link exchanges going, with as many sites as possible. If you run a shower head site, trading links with a quilting directory makes perfect sense. Enough irrelevant links, and you should see a good drop in rankings you should actually get naturally.
6. Use as many free for all "FFA" sites as possible.

Same theory, link exchanges with irrelevant sites won't get you banned, but they will certainly drop your rankings.
7. Target popular keywords and enjoy the extra traffic.

Dont fill your site with keywords about shower heads. Throw in paris hilton, britney spears, and mortage rates. With all those extra people coming in, you're bound to sell a shower head or two. Targeted marketing is for people who want to be bothered by customers all the time.
8. Generate random text

The more text, the better. Generating random text is a great way to get new people into your site, but dont worry they'll close the browser once they read the gibberish. And google will punish your rankings also.
9. Build cloak pages!

A cloaked page is a page designed to be seen by search engines, and optimized, then a real user sees an entirely different page. Again, all the people coming to your super britney spears page listed on google, will surely be happy that you have such a wide selection of shower heads. And soon google will catch on to your cloaked pages also.
10. Hide your text

This one is awesome! There is no way the search engines will ever figure out your white text on a white background. This secret text is your key to getting banned, and rather quickly if someone finds it and tattles on you. So get that huge keyword list ready and start loading up the page!
Summary

I hope this has helped. The sarcasm even got old to me by the end of the list, but these are things you should never, ever consider on your site. Many of the tactics haven't worked well for years, and many of them are futile anyway, as you're only getting traffic that isn't interested in your product. Keep these in mind when talking to an SEO also.

--
Jeremy Morgan is a Portland SEO who also runs a free SEO blog and often writes about search engine optimization and marketing.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

In the SEO world, so much talk revolves around inbound links. It seems the main focus is always on inbounds, how to get them, how to keep them, and how to attract links from "authority" sites.

While inbound linking is crucial to SEO, many people neglect, or outright ignore another crucial part of SEO: page optimization.

In this article, I'll give a few tips, and a high level look at what page optimization is all about. I'll explain some of the meaning behind it, and hopefully you'll find something you've missed on your own site.

Title Tag

You can write a whole article about the title tag. In fact, later on I will. A good title tag serves two purposes. Foremost, it entices users to click on your page. Most search engines use your title tag as the inbound link. Secondly, it is a valuable part of the search engine algorithm. This means two things. Make your title enticing, and use keywords in it.

Extra tip: Use a different title tag for every page on your site.

Meta Tags

Fellow SEOs, start up your flamethrowers! Meta tags are not dead. They certainly aren't as relevant as they were in 1998, but they are still used. In fact, google uses the description tag quite a bit. If you don't want google to choose for you, put the desired text in the tag. Meta tags don't hold a lot of weight these days, in fact i somewhat doubt the keyword tag holds any weight at all. But it only takes about a minute to add them, so why not? Make metatags, and optimize them for your content, and the sales pitch you want shown in the listing.

Extra Tip: Use different meta tag data for every page on your site.

Use a single, relevant H1 tag describing your content.

Pretty self explanatory. Use an H1 tag only once per page and make sure it states what that page is about. Spiders read H1s an factor them into the ranking. This is not always easy if you're using a CMS or particular piece of software.

Extra Tip: If the H1 text is too large, make it smaller with CSS.

Use H2, H3 tags for subheadings.

Remember in school, when they taught you do to outlines? Think of h2 and higher tags as subheadings, that's what they were designed for. Organize the content well so that relevant text is placed below each of the topics outlined in the tags. This provides a schema for the spider to determine the relevancy of the page.

Use bulleted lists.

Bulleted lists are a benefit from an SEO standpoint, but also from a human standpoint. When you break up information into lists it makes it easier to follow and increases the chances the reader will process it,rather than skipping it over.

Extra Tip: Use bulleted lists with CSS to make menus. This uses much less code, and is more extensible later.

Use text navigation, and structure it properly.

Again like the outline theory, you want your main page to branch off into sub category pages, and have all subcategories linked from the main site. Make sure your navigation is easy to use so you don't lose the customer. Use text navigation, and if you must use graphics, name the images by the subject, and use alt tags to describe the link. Flash navigation, while nifty, is virtually ignored by spiders.

I hope this has helped a little in making sense of what page optimization is all about. In the ever changing SEO scene, it's becoming more important than ever to make sure your landing page is set up right.

--
Jeremy is a Portland SEO who also runs a free SEO blog and often writes about search engine optimization and marketing.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com
