Most people think of home exercise as following some 'leg warmers' exercise video from 1982 or getting on the treadmill for 15 minutes. One of the main reasons for this narrow sighted problem is lack of knowledge about what can be achieved at home in terms of health and fitness.

Most people only know what they've been told or what they've read. Unfortunately most of what people are told is skewed or misleading for a host of reasons too deep for us to get into in this article. The important point here is that there is a better way to go about getting the body you want and the fitness levels to go along with it.

So often, a home workout routine gets reduced to 15 minutes of wasted time because of frustration, half hearted commitments and lack of confidence in one's own program. Many times the fitness failure epidemic kicks in and people quit their home exercise plan altogether.

People are often misled to believe that that can only achieve incredible fitness at home if they make a big investment in home exercise equipment. Treadmills, multi-station weight machines and elaborate stretching devices, just to name a few, are all pushed on the public under the guise that without this stuff 'you are eternally doomed to a fat body and poor health'.

The truth is, all you need is a few square feet of floor space and the right mindset to make continuous and stunning progress in your quest for home fitness success. Sure there are some effective little gadgets that can add some variety and fun to your workouts but the number one piece of equipment on your list should be a comfortable floor mat. If you can't spring for a mat - just fold up a soft comforter and you are ready to go.

Before getting off the floor there are at least 87 exercises that you can do ranging from torso and lower body stretches to butt & thigh tighteners and core strengtheners. It doesn't matter if you are a first time exerciser or 'on-and-off' fitness veteran - a creatively structured home workout routine can deliver results to rival any fitness center workout. I say this not just from knowledge of the body but from many years of training people in their homes and offices for various health challenges and physical fitness goals.

Of course, if you are a hardcore body-builder or power-lifter, what I'm saying here may sound like a joke to you and that's alright because I wrote this article for the vast majority of people who just want to look and feel good, both physically and mentally. But, let me just offer you this (from personal experience) you should start thinking now about ways to reduce the high intensity stress and strain on your body - while still maintaining (and most likely improving) your overall health and fitness. High volume, heavy weight and machine type training routines are a long term ticket to aches, pains and injuries - some of you reading this know exactly what I'm talking about. Enough said.

The flexibility of a home exercise routine shows its value when you go on vacation or away on business - the same principles you follow at home can be done at a hotel, at a friends house and even in the outdoors, depending on the climate. For example, I regularly take my clients to local, public playgrounds for some of the best full body workouts I could ever dream up. It's amazing what you can do when you look at a playground with an eye for fitness training programs. Another plus, is that these types of workouts can be fun for family time as well. Take your kids to the park, turn them loose and get yourself a 30 minute cross training workout in while the kids try to copy you. You'll get fit, the kids will pick up the healthy habit from you and they sleep really well that night, too!

--
Pro Trainer, Joey Atlas, is the producer of 7 Internationally distributed DVD Home Workouts .

And visit Effective Body Sculpting for Women .

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

The world of exercise videos is loaded with an endless supply of exercise material for all fitness types and all levels of physical ability. The problem is that most exercise videos are pure trash and absolutely worthless, while a small percentage of all programs in existence actually contain valuable and helpful fitness programs. Many exercise videos are just recycled, old material with a new look package and maybe even a new name with a phony celebrity endorsement attached to it.

You can pick up an old exercise video on Ebay or at a garage sale and watch it side by side with it's 'new' version and they'd literally be exactly the same. So, how do you find and exercise video set that is compatible with your situation and fitness needs. Fortunately, the power of the internet can be your secret weapon in helping you find effective and realistic exercise videos that are going to give you the most bang for the buck.

You should first start out by running a search for your specific fitness goals. For example, go to your favorite search engine and type in 'lower body exercises', 'butt exercise dvds', stretching exercises or 'body shaping exercises' - or whatever words describe what you may be trying to improve. then take some time to look at the results.

If you find some points of interest written or reviewed by a fitness professional or exercise physiologist - take their name and run a search for their name and then take a look at what you find regarding this person. A certain percentage of fitness writers and consultants produce their own line of exercise videos, independently or in partnership with a larger company.

Some important things to note before you start your search for the perfect exercise videos are: Define your fitness goals, both short term and long term. Decide if you want a program that can be done at home or while traveling, with little or no exercise equipment. Do you want an exercise video that focuses on using heavy weights and machines that are only found in a health club? Do you want a program that is flexible and compatible with a hectic family and career life - but still gets you the results you desire?

Be careful not to mistake what the exercise video producers are marketing their program as. For example, many 'body-toning & fat loss' exercise videos are nothing more than old-fashioned aerobics programs in a new disguise. If you want an exercise video that targets certain stubborn, trouble-spots then be sure to find out if the program you are interested in contains specific exercises that target body parts and muscle groups.

An example of this may be where a woman wants to shape and firm her butt and saddle bag area or where a man wants to shrink his flabby gut and tone up his chest, arms and shoulders - it is these specific needs you want to factor in to your exercise video search and look for in the content of the specific program or program series - as many top selling exercise videos are produced as a series or group of videos for different specific purposes.

Approach your exercise video search with some forethought and simple planning and your effort to locate a program that addresses your exact needs will be much easier and more likely to be a success.

--
Joey Atlas, Exercise Physiologist and Fitness Consultant, is the producer of several Internationally known Exercise Videos .

He is also the creator of preganancy fitness tips for new moms.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Bodyweight workouts are very misunderstood and under-estimated ways of enhancing muscle tone and strength. Many trainers and fitness seekers can't see past traditional bodyweight workouts consisting of push-ups, pull-ups and dips.

Both men and women can follow body weight workouts and get great results that are in line with fitness goals ranging from slimming, shaping and toning to strengthening and lean muscle building.

A big hurdle for most people to get over when considering body weight workouts for fitness is the question of, "How can a body weight workout routine replace one that uses weight training and machines?"

It is easy to see how psychology can be an obstacle in trying to help people understand that properly structured bodyweight workouts can be better than traditional weight-lifting and exercise machine workouts. Traditional workouts offer many variations, almost endless actually. Where as bodyweight workouts rely on creativity mixed with a good understanding of how the body functions and what exercises stimulate healthy and safe fitness progress.

Many fitness pros believe that body-weight workouts offer just a limited amount of exercise options and are very general at best, meaning that there is no ability to target and isolate specific muscle groups during a bodyweight workout. This is a big mis-perception that prevents many fitness success stories from ever becoming a reality.

Here's the reason why. When people get into the 'health club mentality' of only being able to workout with equipment, weights and machines, they set themselves up for many episodes of 'falling off the program' and failing. Bodyweight workouts eliminate this excuse.

Here's an example where bodyweight workouts are a million times more effective than regular old gym workouts. You go on vacation or you go out of town on business, or maybe to visit family for several days. So many times these events become excuses for people not sticking to their fitness plan because they 'couldn't go to a gym'. With a well-rounded, bodyweight workout program this excuse is not valid.

The right body weight workouts can be done anywhere and anytime. They can be done at home, the office, a fiend's house or even on a play-ground. And in terms of effectiveness - I can only say through personal experience with my own bodyweight workouts and those of the people who I have trained that when planned properly and followed consistently, bodyweight workouts can be even more effective than most weight lifting or machine based workout programs.

Body weight workouts offer 'fitness veterans' - a refreshing, eye-opening alternative to the those repetitive weight and machine training programs. Even more importantly, bodyweight workouts offer sedentary fitness beginners a safe, non-intimidating and effective method for starting a home based fitness program with a high probability for success.

Whether you are just beginning or you've been 'pumping the weights' for some time now, give some consideration to the benefits and advantages of properly structured body weight workouts and how they can help you move forward in your fitness and conditioning goals. Open up your mind to the possibility of a bodyweight workout being a part of your overall fitness plan and see what happens. You'll be very pleased and maybe a bit surprised with the results you experience.

--
Joey Atlas, M.S. - Exercise Physiology, produced Bodyweight Workouts for Home, Office and Travel.

And also see Exercise Videos for Home Fitness Videos.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Getting Fit After Pregnancy

The first question you will ask yourself as a new mom is, "Will I be a good mother?"

The second biggest question you will ask yourself as a new mom is, “Will I be able to get back into shape after I give birth?” The truth is, yes, you can get back into pre-pregnancy shape and, if you desire, you can get yourself into even better shape than you were in before your pregnancy.

One of the biggest myths you must get past is the classic, “The doctor said I have to wait six weeks before I do any kind of exercise.” Under certain circumstances this is a valid rule. For instance, your pregnancy may have occurred later in life or you experienced complications during your pregnancy and/or the actual birth of your baby.

If you fall into this category you should communicate with you doctor regarding your desire to exercise and abide by her recommendations.

But, if you had an uncomplicated, normal pregnancy there should be no reason why you can’t start working out twenty four hours after you give birth. So as not to mislead you, let’s define working out as it applies to you at this stage of the game.

You are clearly not ready to jump into a full scale fitness program one day after giving birth. But you can and should begin doing gentle isometrics (contract a muscle, hold it for a few seconds & then release it) and Kegels. Of course, you should consult with your doctor before starting just so she is aware of what you are doing. She may also have some valuable input.

Before you leave the hospital ask the doctor about the condition of your rectus abdominus. These are the two muscles that run parallel to each other from the pubic area up to the diaphragm. During some pregnancies the connective tissue between these two muscles tears and separates. If this is your case ask your doctor how you can help them reconnect and heal faster. This will be necessary in order for you to add the next few exercises to your routine.

If your ab muscles did not separate, which should be confirmed by your OBGYN, then you can add the pelvic tilt to your new exercise routine. This is one of the most basic exercises for the “core”. It should also be safe to add a modified abdominal exercise. Starting with a pelvic tilt and then lifting the head and top of the shoulder blades by curling forward slightly as you breathe out. Then return to neutral as you breathe in - repeat with same form.

It is generally safe to add several lower body exercises at this point. I always advise clients to run these by their OBGYN before trying them out.

Lying on your back, on a soft, comfortable surface, keep one leg bent with your foot on the floor while the other leg is flat on the ground. Bring the knee of the leg that is flat toward you by bending it and then lift that same foot off the ground and toward the sky. Then bring it back down by retracing the moves in reverse so you end up at the start position.

The second exercise is known as “the square”. Starting in the same position as the first exercise, lift the straight leg off the ground by about twelve inches or so. Then slowly trace the shape a square in the air with your toes. Keep the square small at first and as you get stronger, you can increase the size of the square. Move slowly and focus on form.

You should be able to start a power-walking program several weeks, if not sooner, after you give birth. There is usually no good reason (unless you had a complicated pregnancy) to wait six weeks post delivery to start a walking program. Of course, you should discuss this with your OGYN before getting started.

At six weeks after delivery you can start to push your fitness program to a higher level by incorporating aerobic work, such as light jogging, and some resistance training with a combination of body-weight and light dumbbell exercises. Also, remember to include stretching exercises for optimal flexibility and range of motion.

The aim of this article is to help you understand that most OBGYNs are conservative when it comes to answering a new mother's questions about workoing out. It is easy for the doctor to “play it safe”, and advise you to wait six weeks before starting your fitness routine. However, if you show your OBGYN the exact exercise program that you wish to follow, he will most likely realize that you have done your homework and should give you the clearance to the start of your post pregnancy exercise program.

Regarding the first question you asked your self, “Will I be a good mother?” Exercising after delivery will automatically make you a better mother for two big reasons:

1) You'll be setting a priceless example for your baby that is highly likely to rub off on him and have a powerful impact on how he chooses to live his life.

2) You'll be stronger, healthier and more energetic. These are three priceless elements for any new mother.

Don't allow your new baby to become an excuse for not exercising. Rather, let your baby help motivate you to take better care of yourself by following a simple and gradual post-pregnancy fitness plan. The example you set will be a true gift that cannot be delivered any other way.

--
Joey Atlas, Fitness Pro & father of three, offers new mothers advice and guidance for Moms Fit Pregnancy .

Also visit Workout Videos for Home Workout Programs.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Best Workout DVDs to Give You a Hot Body

The key to definite fitness success depends very highly on your choice of workout dvds. With tens of thousands of them to choose from, how do you know which ones are right for you and your body? The choices are endless and the variety of workout dvds that are currently available can be somewhat overwhelming when trying to figure which workout program will give you the best results with the least amount of effort.

There is an easy and logical five step process you can go through to help narrow down your choices and help you hand pick the precise workout dvds that are most appropriate for what you are trying to achieve.

Step one - Assess your workout preferences. Do you want to join a gym or health club? Would you rather use workout dvds in the privacy of your own home? Are you interested in using no equipment, if possible? Do you want to train with weights or would you prefer a workout dvd that doesn't require weight training? Do you prefer to workout with music or without? Or would you rather be able to choose your own music? Do you want to watch one fitness professional on screen or do you want to see a group of people doing the exercise program together?

Step two - You should analyze your starting point. Are you a twenty-four year old beginner? Are you a forty-nine year old workout veteran looking for some variations on fitness? Are you a sixty-five year old 'starting all over again'? Are you extremely out of shape and over weight or do you just need to tone and firm up? The best workout dvds are structured to incorporate principles of gradual progress and specific exercise programming for all levels of fitness and conditioning. These types of workout dvds can take a beginner through various stages over time and can also provide plenty of intensity for someone who has been working out regularly but is looking for something to deliver better results and changes.

Step three - You should research the exercise pro behind the workout dvd or dvds you are interested in. Even though a lot of the big names occupy shelf space in Walmart, Target and other department stores, there are a good number of 'grass-roots' workout specialists who are creating and marketing their own brands of safe, efficient and very effective workout dvds. A great way to do this is to find a fitness professional who interests you. Then perform a search of their name on one of the major search engines. See what kind of results you get back and what else you can find out about their workout dvds and fitness philosophy.

Step four - Make sure the workout dvds you purchase come with at least a nine month, or longer, return policy period. A twenty day guarantee is worthless and most people don't really get into a workout dvd until the first three to six weeks from date of purchase. You want enough time to use the dvds and see if you are starting to feel the changes you are seeking. If the workout dvds you have chosen are good ones, then you will see results much sooner and you will not want to return the the dvds anyhow.

Step five - Put your new workout dvds to use. They won't work if you don't use them consistently. If you expect to get great results you should plan on following the progression plans or workout schedules that are included with your workout DVDs. Hint - if you are looking at a program that does not come with a plan or schedule on how to use the workout dvds - it is most likely not a thorough program and will leave you with a lot of guesswork and disappointment. Stay away from these types of workout DVDs with 'no substance' and minimal guidance.

--
Fitness Consultant, Joey Atlas, M.S., is the producer of the top Home Workout DVD System for Busy Women and Men.

Also go to Exercise dvds for Body Shaping Exercise DVDs.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Body shaping is the wise use of certain principles of exercise, fitness and smart nutrition to manifest desired changes in the body. Much too often, the term is confused with other types of exercise programs that are not conducive to firming and shaping the female body, safely and efficiently.

There are several elements of body shaping, although not all elements apply to all women. Fat removal, cellulite reduction, skin tightening, feminine muscle shaping, inches lost, changes in body composition levels, shaping curvy thighs or a rounder butt, toning up the arms and shoulders, losing stomach flab - these can all fall under the heading of body shaping for women.

Two ladies with very different goals can follow the same type of fitness program while adhering to nutritional plans that are structured to be in line with their goals, and dependent on their starting points, with measurable progress and consistent success.

A woman who is sixty-two pounds over weight and wanting to lose body fat has the same body, a human body, as a woman who is slightly under weight and wants to gain a few pounds of muscle weight and shapely, sexy flesh, through body shaping exercises, while improving her overall level of health and fitness. Although there may be differences in natural physical abilities of coordination or strength they can both do the same type of exercise or workout routine. Differences in caloric intake and the quality of foods eaten will be a key factor that brings each of these women closer to their individual body shaping goals. Goals may range from looking great with no clothes on to being able to fit into a specific clothing size.

On a more spiritual level a body shaping goal may be to 'feel' sexy, confident and full of energy to burn.

Cardiovascular or aerobic exercise may be slightly different. The woman who wants to lose body fat to achieve body shaping results, will devote a larger amount of time to cardiovascular exercise (twenty-five - forty minutes) as compared to the woman who wants to build up certain areas of her body to become more shapely (fifteen - twenty-five minutes).

Some body shaping programs attempt to combine the resistance exercise with cardiovascular or aerobic exercise. While this is not easy, and most programs fall short of doing this successfully, it is quite possible - especially when the body shaping program uses body-weight exercise principles. The benefit of this type of program is extremely conducive to what body shaping is all about.

A body shaping program is not usually found in the gym setting. You either have individual programs of weight training and machine exercises or large group classes doing some form of aerobics with some basic body shaping moves. True body shaping takes advantage of gravity, body-weight and kinesiology to bring about changes in the female body through full body conditioning and targeted muscle shaping exercises and workouts. When these factors are combined properly, you can realistically expect to see definite results within three to four weeks - especially when a moderate amount of attention is payed to nutritional intake and daily calories.

The best body shaping programs should be portable - meaning you can do them anywhere and anytime. Leaving no room for the typical excuses of not sticking with 'the program' and allowing you to make continuous progress toward the body shaping goals you have defined for your body and your self.

--
Fitness Consultant, Joey Atlas, M.S., is the producer of the top Body Shaping Workouts for Women.

Also see Exercise dvds for Body Shaping Exercise DVDs.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Quick Lower Body Exercises That Get Hot Results

The best lower body exercises are the ones that can be done anywhere with little or no equipment. Being single with no kids may allow for wasted time in the gym doing twelve sets per lower body part, but once in the real world of spouse, kids and job, those two hour gym visits are history. The good news is this should be a welcome change because the old-school bodybuilder, weights and machine type workout routines can do more damage in the long run as compared to a smart, properly structured lower body exercise routine.

Exercise machines and weights will always have their place in fitness - but they are not the only way to achieve a strong, well toned lower body. The right selection of lower body exercises can produce a sufficient training stimulus to bring about desired changes, continuous progress and visible results. As health clubs and fitness centers are filled with an endless amount of exercise machines and weight training gear, it is in their best interest to promote weight and machine type workout programs. Naturally, members develop a dependency on these types of workouts because they don't learn any alternative exercise methods. Some fitness experts argue that workouts with machines and weights are the only path to true lower body improvements. The reality is, nothing can be further from the truth.

The problems with this mind-set range from the 'more is better' syndrome to the 'I got out of my routine' excuse. To develop a strong, fit and defined lower body your choice of exercises must be realistic for long term adherence and they must consist of exercises that can be done at home or while on the road if you are traveling. As a career personal trainer and fitness consultant I've had the opportunity to work with many people at various stages of life. The people who maintain long term fitness success are the ones who structure their lower body exercise routines so that they are 'portable' - meaning if they don't have a gym available to them - it's not going to prevent them from getting their lower body exercise session in. This ties into one of the essential elements of fitness success - consistency. Staying on a regular exercise schedule will yield the best long term results. Starting and stopping a routine that is unrealistic will yield harmful results - this is a fact.

Lower body workouts consisting of body weight leg exercises produce an incredible amount of natural strength while providing gender specific improvements in muscular development and appearance. While women seek more of a toning and firming effect, men seek more of a lean muscle building effect with muscle group definition. An old fitness myth exists that has people believing that a woman will develop muscles like a man if she follows the same type of lower body exercise program. The exercise program does not dictate this result. It's the gender/genetic differences of the male and female DNA that dictate the specific results that men and women derive from well rounded, and properly structured lower body exercises. Not the type or intensity of the workout routine itself.

Yes, we sometimes see women who look like male bodybuilders or power-lifters - but these abnormal looks can almost always be traced back to some method of pharmaceutical enhancement. For example, taking anabolic steroids or growth hormone to develop as much muscle mass as possible is one way for a woman to lose the fit, sexy and feminine look. Nothing against them - but they do not represent the definition of fitness - especially for women.

No matter if you are male or female, the benefits of properly structured lower body exercises that do not rely on the confines of a gym or fitness center can give you all the results you could ever want, in a program that can easily be followed for life. After all, isn't that what true fitness is about?

Don't get rid of your health club membership - especially if you enjoy doing some of your lower body workouts there. But it would be wise for you to develop a body-weight leg exercise routine for you to follow at home or while you are 'on the road' - so you don't develop over-training injuries or find yourself missing several weeks of exercise sessions because you were traveling or just 'didn't have time to get to the gym'.

--
Personal Trainer and Fitness Advisor, Joey Atlas, is the mastermind behind the BestLower Body Exercises for Home Workouts.

Also stop by No Core Secrets for Effective Core Fitness Tips.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Some fitness experts argue that workouts with machines and weights are the only path to true upper body fitness. Nothing can be further from the truth.

The problems with this scenario range from the 'more is better' syndrome to the 'I got out of my routine' excuse. To develop a strong, fit and defined upper body your workouts must be realistic for long term adherence and they must consist of exercises that can be done at home or in a hotel room. As a career personal trainer and fitness consultant I've had the opportunity to work with many people at various stages of life. The people who live with long term fitness success are the ones who adopt their upper body workouts so that they are 'portable' - meaning if they don't have a gym available to them - it's not going to prevent them from getting their upper body workout session in. This ties into one of the essential elements of fitness success - consistency. Staying on a regular routine will yield the best long term results. Starting and stopping a routine that is unrealistic will yield harmful results.

Upper body workouts consisting of body weight exercises produce an incredible amount of natural strength while providing gender specific improvements in muscular development. While women seek more of a toning and firming effect, men seek more of a lean muscle building effect with muscle group definition. A silly fitness myth exists that has people believing that a woman will develop muscles like a man if she follows the same type of upper body workout program. The exercise program does not dictate this result. It's the gender/genetic differences of the male and female DNA that dictate the characteristics of the results that men and women derive from well rounded, and properly structured upper body workouts. Not the type or intensity of the workout itself.

Yes, we occasionally see women who look like male bodybuilders or power-lifters - but these freakish looks can almost always be traced back to some method of pharmaceutical enhancement. For example, taking anabolic steroids to develop as much muscle mass as possible is one way for a woman to lose the fit and feminine look. Nothing against them - but they do not represent the definition of fitness.

Whether you are male or female, the benefits of properly structured upper body workouts that do not rely on the confines of a gym or fitness center can give you all the results you could ever want, in a program that can easily be followed for life. After all, isn't that what true fitness is about?

Keep your health club membership - especially if you enjoy doing some of your upper body workouts there. But it would be wise for you to develop some bodyweight exercise routines for you to follow at home or while you are 'on the road' - so you don't fall victim to over-training injuries or find yourself missing three weeks of workouts because you were 'out of town'.

--
Joey Atlas, Trainer & Fitness Consultant, is the mastermind of the Best Upper Body Workouts for Home and Travel.

Also see Body Toning Workouts Video Series.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

The key to effective & permanent body toning lies within the definition of the word itself. In short, it means to form, reshape and modify the composition of the body that you currently have. The main focus being on fat-reduction/skin tightening and muscle firming (maybe even a little bit of muscle building). Unfortunately, there are many myths and mis-perceptions that put a more confusing, and often times harmful, meaning behind the simple concept of body toning.

Print ads, radio advertisements and television commercials trying to push the latest fitness gizmos, spas selling body-wrap treatments, hardcore personal trainers delivering painful & time consuming 'weights and machines' type exercise programs and even supplement companies marketing body toning pills are all trying to tap into the emotional pain zones in people of all ages, body types and fitness levels to make more sales without delivering the desired results as safely as possible with as little cost as possible.

In speaking of cost, I not only speak of financial loss but also the loss of one's self confidence and trust in others who are supposed to be helping and not taking unfair advantage of people in desperate or uncertain circumstances. Some want to build up certain body areas, such as the butt and thighs or core and shoulders and add a little bit of healthy body weight in the process.

What most people do not understand is the method by which their goals can be achieved is quite realistic and surprisingly simple as compared to what they previously thought they knew or had been told. Weights, machines and 'bodybuilder' type workouts are not for everyone. This type of fitness routine is not realistic for most people - let alone busy people with careers and/or families.
