Is your dog barking too much?

Dogs bark! It’s normal, it’s natural, that’s what they do. But what if your dog barks a lot, or for long periods of time. Some dog owner’s will tolerate behaviour in their pets they would never tolerate in people. According to the Pet Care Forum “the owners of problem barkers seem to develop an ability to ignore the noise.” Now - that’s just plain annoying and can make you very unpopular. You might be used to it or if you’re out of the house a lot you may not appreciate how bad it is, but a shift working neighbour or the mother next door trying to get her baby to sleep might not be so forgiving.

Author and animal expert Dr. Jonica Newby says “contrary to popular belief studies from around the world show consistently that half the dogs given to animal welfare shelters are not abandoned but are taken there by their owners who cannot cope with the barking, destructiveness or sheer energy of their pets”. It helps if you know why your dog barks as there may be some simple steps you could take to stop or cut down the barking.

What’s the problem?

When does your dog bark? For how long? Make a note of it. .If you’re out a lot and the neighbours complain could they note down the occasions when your dog barks? Do you have a webcam or video camera so you can monitor what your dog does when you’re out? Leave the dog as if you were going out for the day. Wait around outside to check on what your dog does, if it starts to bark or howl go back indoors. Do not make the situation worse by punishing the dog but don’t let it think you have returned as a reward for its barking.

What to do?

There are several simple things you can do to quieten things down.

1.If your dog barks when it’s in the garden or yard don’t put it out on it’s own
2.If it barks at people, keep it away from windows.
3.If it barks when people leave for work or school, try to distract it or keep it busy.
Could you take it for a walk at this time?
4.If your dog is outside barking- let it in!
5.Don’t get the dog exited by playing with it late at night. Keep the dog calm.
6.When you go out could you take the dog with you or get a friend or relative to look after
it?
7.Give your dog some exercise before you go out, if it’s tired it will bark less.

Long term

Once you start making progress, praise your dog every time he is quiet when he would normally have barked. Give it a treat, be consistent, if it barks tell it firmly to be quiet. Dogs are pack animals - they love company. They’re part of the family. If you have to leave them put the radio on quietly and leave them some toys or chews. Dogs guard their territory by barking at people, animals, cars. Keep the dog away from the front of the house, if he starts to bark bring him straight in. If your dog barks simply for attention don’t give it any. Look at the dog then look away, doesn’t respond. Ignore the dog for twenty or thirty minutes two or three times a day. Have everyone in the house do the same thing. Doing this for fifteen minutes before you go out can help stop your dog barking when you leave.

You will need to be consistent and committed if your dog is to improve in his behaviour. Don’t expect miracles overnight but if you follow the advice outlined in this article you will see a definite improvement.

There are other things that can assist you to increase the traffic coming to your website. Most people understand what links are, there are internal and external. Simply put, external links are a connection with your web page HTML which is from another source. That is, not from another page on your website linking two or more internal pages together.

There are various types of links; some of these are rated more highly than others by the search engines.

1. Affiliate links
2. External Links
3. Reciprocal links
4. Internal links

Now, as I said some are rated more highly than others and to some extent the number of links will also determine the page ranking that Google will assign to you. It really is about ‘connections in high places’. So if you have a fairly low grade, low ranked, poorly constructed web page/site, which has no connection to your topic whatsoever, that has a link from their site to yours, it is not very likely to be seen as of much consequence by the spiders and wont help much. I say much, links are good but common sense must prevail here, and just any old link will not do you a great deal of good.

Another reason for choosing your links well is that there are companies out there who will – for a small fee – provide you with hundreds of links most probably of poor quality and while this may get your links numbers up, yet again, Google, always on the watch for ‘jiggery pokery’ is not happy with this and is leaning more and more to quality. Another point to consider is that, if the site you are linking to gets little or no traffic, the chances of someone going there and finding a link to your website will be remote indeed.

Now, how do you get good quality links? Well, there are products on the market which will enable you to determine the top websites, which receive high volumes of traffic, who enjoy the top rankings and also have a theme common to yours and if they have the same keywords, that is better again. Once you have ascertained which ones these are, it is simply a case of asking them to link to you (by e-mailing them) and vice versa. Thus you have created a reciprocal link. Not all will be agreeable to this but if you are in the same market and not directly in competition with each other, there can be great mutual benefits. You may be pleasantly surprised by their reaction. Remember to be polite and professional.

You may need to check reciprocal links from time to time as web owners are not under obligation to keep your link on their site.

Some web sites do hold a good number of links for example selling affiliate products. These are not terribly valuable in the eyes (or spiders) of search engines.

A second way to create lots of links is by posting comments on forums and adding your link. If the visitors like your site word can get around quickly. This also applies for social networking sites and this can drum up traffic very quickly indeed. Social networking sites are generally free and it will only take you a few minutes to set these up.

Another method is blogging. Most of these are free to use. Google is in love with some of these sites. You can also have links on other sites which provide what is called a lens for your site. Have a go at these and become familiar with them. They can potentially create masses of traffic for you.

Apply to have you advertisements appear in as many directories as you can. Again, these are visited by lots of traffic and visitors could well click on your link if you have an advert that is interesting and useful to them. There are some free ones out there.

Another great and long lasting means of getting excellent quality traffic is by submitting an article which corresponds to your website and hopefully you are interested enough to write about. People will search these sites because they want information on a given topic and want to find out quickly and easily. If you place your article under the appropriate heading and follow the guidelines that most of the article sites have (these vary so make sure you read the submission rules for each article submission site.) you have put yourself in an excellent position to have a steady stream of visitors over a long period of time.

As you become familiar with these methods and add more and more links you will not only increase traffic to your website but you will also go up the search engine rankings. That can’t be bad!!
