<description><![CDATA[ There are several books and websites about how to live frugally, but for some people, doing without was not a choice; it was a way of life during the Depression.<br /><br />The things that we take for granted today, like disposable plates, would not have been thrown away during the Depression era had they been available in those times, they would have been washed and reused.  Most of us would never even think about washing a paper plate, let alone using it more than once, but now in these difficult times maybe we should stop and take a look at our daily lives to see how much we waste and take for granted.<br /><br />A lot of of us go through life wasting money and resources without even a second thought, but taking a look back in time can give us some valuable lessons about the Depression tragedy and help us with the credit crunch and ways to survive the recession.  The Depression was an unfortunate time in our history, and many people marvel over how individuals living during that time made do with very little at all and still managed to survive.<br /><br />Things we throw away easily today would certainly not have seen such a fate during the Depression.  Taking the time to look at our own lives and how we live today, and then comparing that to how Depression-era individuals managed to get by can provide us with helpful lessons which could improve our overall lives in these difficult times.<br /><br />The Depression can teach individuals valuable lessons about how much we've become a throwaway society and where we can try to cut back on needless waste and money spending.  <br /><br />The Great Depression started in 1929 and lasted through the 1930's.  In the kitchen, people used every drop and morsel possible, turning over ketchup bottles to rinse out the last little bit and add that liquid to a meat dish for flavouring.  Each and every piece of a turkey was cut and used.  Dinner was whatever food was available but was unfortunately not a well-balanced meal.<br /><br />The cause of what set off the Great Depression still remains a bit of a mystery, though it's clear that individuals between 1929 and through the 1930s had to rethink how they lived and ate to survive.  Every bit of food possible was used in cooking, containers were emptied and scraped for every bit and washed for storing other items.  <br /><br />Resourceful wasn't an option in those years - it was a way of surviving.  A lot of holidays were celebrated in spirit but no decorations or presents were to be had.  While we don't necessarily need to go to that kind of extreme of frugality today, we can learn from the idea of using and reusing that Depression era individuals were forced to live with.  <br /><br />When you look at the average debt for an individual in the United States, a whopping $8000, ask yourself whether all those things purchased were really and truly needed?  While there are many ways we can save money and be environmentally responsible, the point is to stop and appreciate what we have, instead of just taking things for granted. <br /><br />The expectations are not to live as frugally as individuals during the Depression did.  The point is to learn from how people in that time managed to get by with far less and to be introspective about how we consume far more than we need too.<br /><br />So here are just 10 tips on surviving the recession:<br /><br />1)  Reorganize your spending habits and learn to do without a lot of the consumer extras.<br /><br />2)  If possible cut up those cards now and make up your mind to either pay cash for purchases or do without. <br /><br />3)  Do away with your gas guzzling car.<br /><br />4)  Forcefully pursue monies due you.<br /><br />5)  Walk or ride a bicycle whenever possible.<br /><br />6)  Keep away from department stores.<br /><br />7)  Go through your closet and drawers to see what you can still make use of.<br /><br />8)  Eat as little meat as possible.<br /><br />9)  Shun dry cleaning as much as possible. <description><![CDATA[ Obesity rates have doubled in the last twenty years, and in children the rate has tripled, according to research conducted by the American Dietetic Association.  Obesity is much more than simply a cosmetic problem.  Being considerably overweight causes serious health problems, and when obesity starts in childhood, unfortunately it often sets the child up for a lifetime of poor health. <br /><br />In the last two decades, the rate of obesity among the population as a whole has doubled.  In children, the figure is even more astounding.  According to the American Dietetic Association, the obesity rate in children is three times what it was twenty years ago.  People who are considered to be obese can suffer many problems regarding their health.  Regrettably, children who become obese at a young age will have difficulty with their overall health.<br /><br /><br />Research indicates that the rates of obesity have, at best, doubled with some sections of society.  But among children, the rate of obesity has tripled.  People who suffer from obesity cannot just slough it off as an appearance issue.  They need to educate themselves about the possible health consequences of being overweight.  This is even more important in children who become obese at an early age.  <br /><br />Although obesity can be hereditary, there are many steps a parent can take to keep their child from becoming obese, even if there is a genetic predisposition towards the condition.  The most important factor leading to today's obese children is poor nutrition.  Snack food is readily available, and frequently full of refined sugars that have no nutritional value.  <br /><br />To encourage your children to eat properly, start feeding them high quality food that is full of nutritional value at an early age.  Persuade your children to eat slowly at meals and enjoy their food.  The slower a child eats, the less food they will consume.  <br /><br />Consider rewarding your child with a small toy that they will enjoy for much longer instead of sweets, candy, or ice cream.  Have convenient, healthy foods on hand for quick snacks.  Think about keeping some fruit salad sliced up in your fridge.  Carrot sticks are another satisfying snack.  For a sweet treat, freeze some pure fruit juice into a tasty Popsicle.  A fruit smoothie with pure yogurt is another desert alternative that is high in nutritional value. <br /><br />Despite the fact that it may not be possible, to avoid fatty, sugary foods altogether in your child's diet, it is best if they are an exceptional treat.  This will educate your child to look for foods that provide solid sources of fuel for their bodies.  Subsequently, when the birthday cake or Christmas treat comes around, they can enjoy some sugar, and you do not have to agonize about the health risks because you know that their normal diet is healthy and nutritious. <br /><br />Educate your child on the foods that are best for them.  Provide them with foods that will give them healthy energy benefits, such as fruits and vegetables.  By doing this, your child will be thankful for the rare treats that they are given on special occasions.  It will also ease some of your doubts because you will be secure in the fact that they are eating foods that give nourishment for their bodies. <br /><br />Unfortunately healthy foods are not always a convenient option for the demanding parent.  In today's society, foods that are high in fat and other damaging components are more readily on hand than their healthier counterparts.  But when possible, parents must strive to fill their child's diet with as much healthy food possible.  The sugary snack should be used only as an occasional delight instead of a daily requirement.  Doing this will guarantee a healthier diet for your child and relieve you from being troubled over their daily eating habits.<br /><br />Children who eat correctly are in general more active, because they have more energy from the superior food they are eating.  This extra activity helps burn calories, which is also great for keeping weight at bay.  Children who eat appropriate diets are more likely to go outside and run around than kids who eat a diet high in sugar and refined flour. <br /><br />Children who eat foods that are full of fat and sugared have less energy and are less inclined to be as full of life as those children that eat nutritious foods.  More activity means more calories burned which, in turn, helps to keep children at a healthy weight.  The more nutritious a child's eating is, the more likely they will be to play in order to burn off their healthy energy.<br /><br />Healthy foods offer longer-lasting energy rather than the little spurts that sugary foods give.
