Why pay more…..

…when you can pay less? If you are seeking an answer to this question or want to know just in case then you are at the right place. If not it would be the right time to leave and read something that is of interest to you (I don't mean to be rude but I believe that everyone should value their time).

I would like to start by telling a fable for those of you who are stilled hooked. This story is not mine as I have borrowed it from somewhere and I'll be honest about it (for people who read around this subject they would know exactly where I borrowed it from). I would however try to make it as contemporary as possible. With the financial meltdown and economic downturn infecting the globe, various organizations decided to axe jobs as a measure to cut cost. Faced with financial crisis, a steel manufacturing unit decided to let go of some of it employees, one of them a seasoned mechanic in-charge of steel rolling machine. Everything was going as normal when one fine day the rolling machine broke and the manufacturing unit came to a grinding halt. Since the rolling machine was pretty old the manufacturer was no where to be found to fix it. With losses mounting (the situation was already grim) the owner decided to get the experienced mechanic come and fix it. The mechanic came armed with hammer and gave the machine few calculated blows. The machine slowly started to roll its way into life. The mechanic invoiced the owner for $ 10,000 and the owner was shocked and refused to pay. The mechanic redid the invoice and it now read: labor charges - $100, Knowing exactly where and how much force to hammer with - $9,900. The owner happily paid the bill, no question asked.

After this little story let's delve into and discuss fee that is charged for SEM/SEO work. This arena has many players some of whom would promise you anything under the sun and still charge you a fraction of what others would for the same job. What you get for your money in terms of value and service is a completely different story. Just to give you a brief, for them SEO is all about Meta tags, keyword stuffing, crappy link building, senseless directory submissions and unproductive search engine submissions. They are totally unaware of the fact that every business demands a different solution because none of them are alike. Website analysis (both from a technical and user perspective), keyword research and analysis, competition analysis and other aspects that are mandated to deliver the desired result are usually unheard and seldom practiced by firms offering rock bottom prices.

And now I would like to tell you where the story fits in. SEO is very similar to preparing a delicacy. First of all you would have to know the ingredient that go into it and that's not the end of it. You would have to know exactly how much to add and when to add it to create the perfect taste. So it is the knowledge of when, where, what and how that counts, more than anything else. The mechanic charged a normal fee for his labor but a premium for his knowledge, the experience he had gained over the years. The same holds true for SEO firms who charge more than what any Tom, Dick or Harry would do for the same job. They understand your business objectives and where SEO fits into your overall marketing strategies. They still carry out the basic functions of SEO (like any other) but they do it diligently. Their strategies are backed by sound research and based on experience. An absolute winner, if you would like to cut this long story short.

Getting certified - A worthless exercise or a sound investment

Getting certified - a dilemma that has infected organizations and individuals alike. SEO certification has always been surrounded by controversies and has raised many eyebrows. There is a sea of websites that promote and offer SEO certifications, some of them belong to SEO agencies while some to independent organizations. The abundance of such agencies and organizations makes the entire situation confusing and ad hoc.

The ambiguity of the situation is further compounded by the fact that there is no official governing body for SEO practitioners, hence these courses cannot be cross checked or verified for its genuineness. Due to the conspicuous absence of a governing body, the industry as a whole lack set standards and regulations and depend heavily of self policing. No bureau of complaints and no bureau of compliance, a congenial environment for frauds and cheats. 'May hay while the sun shines' seems to have inspired the lot.

Unlike conventional education, SEO is mostly self taught. People learning search engine optimization read articles related to the field, visit forums, participates in discussions, attend seminars and conferences. They then apply their learning, observe results, make necessary adjustments and then repeat the cycle. Though there are many certifications and courses on offer from the self proclaimed certifying authorities, none of them are universally recognized.

As in any other industry, certification works as an endorsement of your expertise and credibility. Showcasing your search engine optimization certified logo, gives your potential clients a sense of security. However, the certificates on your wall would be pieces of junk if you do not have success stories, to validate your claim of being an expert. From a client's perspective, it helps them decide upon a company with whom they can entrust their advertising dollar. A word of caution - customers should be wary as these certifications can be misleading. The only safeguard they can expect comes from verifying results achieved by the company in the past. Also, if I were a customer I would probably go to the certifying SEO agency to get my work done, rather than employing the certified agency. Why would someone settle for the second best when one can get the best.

One question that I think has been left unanswered is that who certifies the certifying agency or organization. The answer to the question is plain and simple - no one. I don't hold any grudges against these firms but the question still needs to be answered to establish authenticity. Search engine marketing industry is more than a decade old and having a certifying authority in our midst still sounds like a far fetched dream. Its about time to form some sort of a consortium and iron out difference to establish a global framework of rules and regulation. Getting search engines to endorse it would prove to be a mammoth task but is unavoidable to ensure sound framework.

Until and unless Search engine marketing industry decides on a set of standards which is endorsed by search engines, these certifications will only have cosmetic value.

"Being on par in terms of price and quality only gets you into the game, client service wins the game."

Lately, I have been thinking about aspects that differentiate one vendor from another. While expertise, experience, affordability, and ease of communication featured high on the list, client servicing made a distinct appearance.

Effective client servicing is very often what differentiates the winner from the plodders, in today's highly competitive business landscape. Exemplary client service practices can give your product/service the extra impetus it needs to outshine rival product/service. And since finding new clients is much more expensive than retaining existing ones, the need for superior client servicing gets amplified. Also, a lost customer would mean lost revenue and an unhappy customer can damage your reputation.

With so much at stake, I don't believe any organization would not want to service their clients well. In view of this, I would like to share some quintessential aspects of effective client servicing.

Honesty is the best policy
Honesty and sincerity go a long way with clients. Do not pretend that you have answers to every problem they have, if you don't. Admitting a weakness in your knowledge or process is better than outright lies. The genuineness of your concern to formulate an effective solution to your client requirements will win you their loyalty and long term partnership.

Foresee you clients' needs
Your business plan should be built around understanding and anticipating your clients' needs and aspirations. Make sure you offerings are in sync with your clients' expectations and delivers on those expectations satisfactorily. A mismatch would lead to unpleasant experience.

Listen to your clients
Effective listening entails truly making an effort to absorb and comprehend what is being said and acknowledge that understanding. Learning to listen is a key skill that will serve you well in all aspects of your business. Attend to even the smallest details. Try putting yourself in the client's shoe and endeavor to understand their point of view.

Resolve conflicts in time
Don't allow issues to remain unaddressed and mould and fester. Prompt and timely resolution holds the key to good client servicing. Don't shy away from tendering an apology even if you are not necessarily in the wrong. Intervention by a senior member to placate an important client and seek effective solution can be effective at times.

Communicate and follow-up periodically
Your client service initiative should not stop with completion of sales process. The endeavor should be to maintain a free flow of information between you and your clients. The communication should be designed to educate clients about your product/service and organization. Newsletters, interactive forums, and other forms of social media are effective tools to communicate key messages.

Seek to build long lasting relationship
It is imperative to build long lasting relationship with your clients and not just perfecting a singular non-repetitive client. Building an effective relationship involves being responsive to client requests. Every effort should be made to accommodate client requests or to explain options that are available. A client, who feels appreciated, cared for and understood is less likely to leave in pursuit of better service and/or price. Effective relationship can compensate for poor performance, but it cannot be used or rather abused to justify low grade performance.

In short, superior client servicing is critical to your survival in the market place. It should be the cornerstone of your business and will help you retain a loyal client base.

Since the advent of search engine marketing (SEM), the number of firms offering SEM services has grown exponentially. Each of them wants your business, trying to co-exist and at the same time ignore the presence of others. Campaign fee is by far the most contentious issue plaguing the online marketing industry. Some firms are too willing to undercut others on price to win business and in the process hurt their clients and themselves. The matter gets worse when businesses use price as the sole selection criteria for hiring SEM agency.

It is a widely accepted fact that sub standard service is commensurate with low fee. If the service provider is paid less than the cost of providing the desired level of service, the service providers would have to either foot the bill for the extra efforts required or deliver non optimal service. A service provider willing to lose money on your account is a rarity and makes the second outcome more likely.

Perhaps, understanding the nature and dynamics of search engine marketing could possibly persuade clients' to shell out more money for their campaigns. Search engine marketing cannot be accomplished with the sole use of technology. Human intelligence and its application to derive results are integral to SEM. This talent does not come cheap and will have to be accounted for in the campaign fee. In addition to this, search engine marketing can get quite complex and requires considerable efforts to achieve the set campaign objective. The variables associated with a campaign and its permutation and combinations consumes considerable amount of resources and time.A reasonable campaign fees is a justification of this investment of resources on part of the service provider. Frugal investment of resources (proportional to the fees) would only lead to a under optimized campaign. This would further diminish the likelihood of delivering a positive return on the client's investment.

Fee haggling could possibly trigger a chain of events that would eventually undermine the campaign objectives and make it susceptible to failure. In the event of failure, the client would blame the service provider for over-promising and under-performing. The provider in turn would try and shift the blame back on them for paying less and expecting more. In reality, the service provider and the client are equally guilty for this unhappy and bitter relationship. The failure on the client's part to understand the dynamics and competitive nature of search engine marketing, lead them to bargain on the pricing structure. The provider on its part should shoulder a fair share of blame for willingly entering into a business deal, being well aware that the fee would be inadequate to cover the campaign cost.

Fortunately, there are clients who can comprehend the true nature of SEM services and do not treat it as a commodity that can be bought for a fixed price. Clients who pursue the line of bargaining over fees are doomed to experience the same failure with every SEM firm they hire. Experienced SEM firms are well aware of the fact that accepting business for low fee would have disastrous consequences and politely refuse such opportunities. This ensures that they have a satisfied client base and gain credibility by delivering on their promises.

It is quite evident in the prevailing market place that SEM firms aren't defending their fees aggressively. Instead of standing by it, there are too many firms that are acquiescent to lower their fees to gain business. They fail to realize that price is not a differentiating factor to attract business (with a few exceptions) and price should not be the only selection criterion either. Unfortunately, both the firm and the prospect falter to grasp this lesson until it's too late.

Sounds like an oxymoron but is true nonetheless.
Businesses often build websites, with the intention to make money, without having carefully thought and planned the entire process. If you are in the process of building or rebuilding your website, this post is for you. For those of you who already have a website running, you could very well draw some inferences for making appropriate changes to your website or mark it for future reference.

Before jump starting your online business (or for that matter any business), you will have to define clear and concise goal(s); objectives that you wish to achieve via your website. Without a goal you are headed nowhere because you don't know where you are going. It's like hitting the road without actually knowing the destination. You can drive as much as your want but you would reach ‘nowhere'.

Your website goal could range from selling products/services to building your brand - whatever it is, you need to know for sure what you need to achieve. Once you are fixated on the goal(s) you want to achieve through your website, the job is half done (well begun is half done). You now need to ascertain the key performance indicators aka KPIs to measure your goal(s); the measurement part kicks in after the launch of website. The stage is all set - from here on you need to start working your way back.

It is essential that the website is designed to fulfill your goal(s). The website's navigational structure should be designed to guide visitors to perform the desired action. It is imperative that every page is treated as a landing page - an entrance to the conversion process. If the entry doors are conspicuously absent, visitors would leave without fulfilling any of the goal(s). Please don't expect that visitors would find these entry doors; you have to keep it wide open for them. Website content that urges visitors to perform the intended action(s) also plays a pivotal role in this entire process. Besides this, the website design should fulfill usability and readability parameters. Also, it is imperative to ensure that the website is not complex and/or cluttered - simple works fine.

If you are looking to promote your website using search engine optimization it is important that the on-page factors are incorporated during the design and development stage. Your SEO strategy will need to be ingrained into the website design. Search engine optimization should never be considered as an afterthought. If you do so you would duplicate efforts and end up redoing work (some if not all) done during the design and development cycle. It is therefore important that all these activities are carried out in tandem and are synchronized to achieve synergy. If you plan to hire an SEO agency, it is always a good idea to have them actively involved in the design and development of the website.

There are too many activities going on simultaneously and it is easy to lose sight of your goal. You would therefore need to carefully examine all activities to ensure that they are on track. Implement ‘course correction analysis' to continuously monitor these activities and identify any deviation from the set objectives. I am not trying to scare you but it is crucial that all the pieces fit together perfectly when they are put together. It will decide whether your business is a success or a failure. ‘Going back to the drawing board' is an option you should avoid at all costs.

In essence, every building block of your website should individually and commutatively work together to fulfill the goal. The only way of ensuring this is to work you way back to the smallest denominator with the ultimate goal in mind. Since each element will be built to fulfill the ultimate goal, the entity as a whole (website) will do exactly the same - help you achieve your goal.

Web 2.0 and SEO: Fit or Misfit

Internet is a source of information, a platform for interaction and a marketplace to do business. The uses of Internet surpass all our collective imagination, as each given moment people give it a different utility dimension. Information sharing and online trading are however the top two activities that are performed via the Internet. Online businesses actively seek avenues to exploit the online marketplace and thus increase revenue - the ultimate business goal.

Internet marketplace has witnessed a boom in recent past and now serves as an efficient platform for trade worth billions of dollars. Competition in the online arena has skyrocketed and therefore making money online is easier said than done. In order to succeed in the prevailing market conditions, it is imperative to attract and engage visitors. Having a plain website that sells products/services is passé as such websites fail to engage the visitors at granular level. With numerous options available to the customers, they would soon exit your website and go somewhere else. Web 2.0 platforms could very well be leveraged to save your website from a premature online demise.

Web 2.0 technologies are characterized by slick user interface, user friendly controls, and aesthetically appeasing and appealing layout to keep visitors hooked. AJAX (asynchronous java script and XML), a web 2.0 technology, is a suitable candidate for interactivity on a website. AJAX, when implemented, responds to user's request without actually re-loading the entire page. Numerous webmasters have adopted AJAX to enhance user interaction and website usability in an attempt to boost conversion rate. Therefore it would be safe to say that failure to incorporate web 2.0 technologies could spell disaster for your online business.

Unfortunately, web 2.0 elements such as AJAX, flash, podcasts, etc. are not search engine friendly. This means that search engine spiders cannot completely crawl such websites and thereby affect search engine indexing. So on one hand you have enhanced customer interaction, greater website usability and higher conversion; while on the other hand you have a website that is not search engine compliant. Since it is difficult for search engine spiders to read such websites, it would effectively means that it is difficult to get them to rank. Don't misinterpret this, it difficult not impossible. Therefore there is no reason to be dejected if you have a website that uses any of these web 2.0 technologies.

A lot has changed in terms of search engine algorithms, it sophistication and technology. They are now better at indexing AJAX based or dynamic websites. Plenty has been written about ways to do it (since it is outside the purview of this article, the discussion on how to optimize such websites is not included) and has been successfully accomplished by many. Reason enough to cheer.

Any deliberation about web 2.0 is incomplete without mentioning blogs, forums and other social media websites. User generated media (UGM) and various social media platforms are now main stream strategy for any search marketing campaign. Web 2.0 will play a crucial role in shaping your present and future online marketing initiatives.

Geo Target your audience

Every website is built with a purpose and has its own target audience; while some may be targeting the global audience, others may be contending for the local niche. Market segmentation is an age old theory and is practiced widely. Businesses often implement geographical market segmentation based on their product/service offering. A florist based in Seattle is most unlikely to serve customers based in New York. Similarly, a ‘car breakdown’ service provider in the US would not be interested in promoting his website in the UK, or for that matter on global domain because that it not their intended target market. This is where the concept of ‘Geo Targeting’ fits into your marketing strategy; the need to showcase your products/services to your targeted audience. After all target audience is what matters the most.

Paid advertising like Google AdWords has a feature that makes it possible for marketers to target their intended geography. Hence, a Seattle based florist can run a paid campaign that is only visible to searchers located in Seattle. With search engine optimization, it was difficult to replicate the same effect and almost impossible to target cities without appending city name (geographic locator) in the keywords. But the search volumes for such keywords were significantly low and therefore made it infeasible in most cases.

Search engines in an endeavor to provide more relevant results to searchers started to incorporate the principles of geo targeting. This was based on the finding that majority of searches are local in nature i.e. city, state or country specific. So if you were to search for budget airlines while in the United States, the results would be tilted towards US based budget airlines. Repeat the same search from a different country and you would find that the results are centered on airlines from that particular country. Different results for searchers present in different geographical locations; you get the hint don’t you?

Search engines filter and display results based on the geographical location of searchers. They do so by establishing the geographical intent of a searcher based on various factors. Search engines also establish the geographical relevancy of web pages in order to present the most appropriate search results. Knowing these factors would help you effectively gain online visibility in the desired geographic location. The signals that come into play are:-

Top Level Domain (TLD) is a potential signal that can be used by search engines to establish the geographic relevance of a page. An .fr domain is a clear indication that the website is intended for France and hence treated the same. Having the relevant TLD for your website is therefore essential.

Location of web server is also treated as an indicator that can tie a website to a particular geography. Search engines could treat a .com website hosted in Australia to be from Australia. It is therefore important to get the website hosted locally.

The inbound link profile of your website is another indication that search engines use to associate the website with a particular region. If a significant portion of the inbound links is coming from a particular region, search engines are more likely to interpret this regional association as a sure sign of the website’s location. A comprehensive back link strategy is therefore mandated to use this factor effectively.

The language used on the website can also be treated as an indicator but there are potential pitfalls. In case of multilingual websites this factor may not be foolproof. Also a website in Spanish could be associated with Spain when it could be directed to some other Spanish speaking nation. In addition to this, the repetitive use of city or country name may lead search engines to believe that there exists a regional association. It is therefore required that you incorporate the relevant language signals to help search engines make the desired decision.

Google local listing details the physical address of a website and is plotted on Google map. This information can be easily used by Google to “put 2 and 2 together” and draw the regional connection. Getting listed there would not only benefit you in local searches, but also help you build the regional connection.

Google webmaster tool incorporates an option which allows verified site users/webmasters to indicate Google the intended region for the website. By default it is not set to any particular country. Setting the most appropriate region from the list is also a plausible option.

The factors mentioned above may not be comprehensive but sufficient to help you achieve online visibility in your target market. As with all others things pertaining to search engines, it is very difficult to predict the weight each of these factors carry individually. Search engines use these factors in various proportions and the presumed weight could vary depending on the number of factors available for decision making.

To stay amidst the warming online business competition, many strategies are dealt with. Changing the web design, rewriting the content, or rolling up the entire website for a new one are the few common ones. Getting the XHTML web design is among one of the “staying in the competition” practices. And more yet, it lends your website a user friendly design.

Various conversion service providers offer XHTML coding on different terms and conditions. The basic features that almost all efficient conversion providers offer are:-

Source Files Format- The conversion process accepts source files in all common formats like PSD, GIF, JPG, PNG, etc.

Cross Browser Compatibility- The conversion should be amiable with all major browsers like Internet Explorer (6 and 7), FireFox, Safari, Opera, etc. Any compatibility mismatch results in the uselessness of conversion.

Fast Delivery- The conversion from PSD to XHTML doesn’t take much time. Usually one or two business days for each internal page are taken. Some providers even promise as less as 4 hours.

W3C Validation- The W3C validation sign lends more liveliness to the website design.

Hand coded XHTML Strict markup- The hand coded XHTML works better, as it ensures complete knowledge of the website while coding.

Tableless Web Design- The conversion includes CSS layout to arrange elements and texts on a web page.

Search Engine Optimized Conversion- To ensure search engine optimized design, the conversion process uses logical HTML structure.
A stool is essentially a seating equipment with no back or armrest. For centuries the term was synonymous with a three legged seat designed especially to spruce up the interiors. It was the standard piece of seating arrangement for majority of people, while chair was reserved for people with important personage.

The use of stools has not changed much but it has evolved significantly to include comfort, aesthetics and functionalities. This has fueled the growth in its popularity and is used in many households and workplaces today. If you desire cushion, versatility and choice, adjustable stools should feature prominently in your shopping list.

A majority of the stools are specially designed to fit a certain table height. While this may be acceptable for most applications, there are times when fixed height stools are rendered useless. As a result of this adjustable stools gain precedence over fixed height stools as it imparts convenience and flexibility, and is apt for both household and office use. Adjustable stools don't need to be changed when the furniture accompanying it are changed. This translates into a long term investment and would last for many years even if the decor is changed frequently. Adjustable stools also play a crucial role in reducing ergonomic overuse syndromes, more commonly knows as musculoskeletal disorder.

There are a few important criteria that should be considered while selecting adjustable stools. The first and the foremost aspect is the placement of the foot rail. A person with an average height should be able to place his/her legs on the foot rail without stretching or bending the legs too much. In either case the stress caused could lead to injuries. Secondly, the variation in human height mandates that the height of the stool be adjustable. The height of the stool can thus be adapted and made proportional to the height of the table or work surface. It is also essential to check the 'height adjustment range' to ensure that it is in accordance with the use and the user.

A typical adjustable stool should incorporate the following features to deliver versatility and maximum benefits to its users:

•	User friendly pneumatic height (up to 32”) adjustment mechanism
•	Reinforced five leg nylon bases
•	Cushioned seating surface
•	Antimicrobial/antibacterial vinyl finish
•	Anti-stain finish
•	Adjustable foot ring
•	Compliant to ANSI/BIFMA standards

However, buying even the best designed adjustable stool with ergonomic features would fail to curb cumulative damages if the person using it adopts an improper sitting posture. Minor adjustments to the person's sitting habits will potentially reduce injuries caused due to prolonged sitting. This however should not cloud the usefulness and versatility imparted by adjustable stools. The novel idea of maximizing a stool's usefulness in all kinds of situation and with different users triggers an exclaim “Just right!”

--
Perch Chairs and Stools offers best quality Adjustable stool at its online furniture supply store.
