Music is part of our lives. Babies are comforted by lullabies, we learn to speak and communicate through song, teenagers first rebel through rap, and communities are brought together through hymns. Music defines who we are, and allows us to concentrate on tasks by providing rhythm to our daily tasks, and a melody can dredge up memories long thought forgotten.

Although we've had access to portable music for decades, the iPod has revolutionized how we think about portability itself; songs can be downloaded in a few minutes and be played until they have been replaced. As permanent media are not needed, such as for compact disk players, and the songs can be downloaded again (in case of accidental deletion) there is no need for protecting the songs themselves. This makes iPods the most portable music source, as other players require not only the player, but the medium itself. In other words: You don't need to drag tapes or CD's along, and worry about how you will carry them or keep them safe.

Unfortunately, iPods do not support all kinds of audio formats. Luckily there is iPod AudioBook software that will make audio books out of your .flac or .ogg or any other files.

You can also do something you can't with other players: You can transmit the music to other players. Thus sharing music or trading songs is just a matter of having the right cords. You can also place the iPod in a dock, allowing it to play music in a better sound system. Whereas other players were limited to transferring the media itself, the iPod becomes the media.

Besides music, some iPods can handle video as well as images. Besides keeping video size small, this means that viral videos can infect systems beyond the limits of the original system. It has also created entirely new industries. The best example of this is that comic artists can allow their comics to be downloaded, and those comics can be shared with other fans of the comics. Although it probably won't overtake people printing comics to share with friends any time soon, it does allow someone to carry their favorite comics with them wherever they go or download then for future reading if they download the comics as part of bigger packages.

The iPod has become the center point of new marketing campaigns, as well as new legislation. After all, when a potential listener doesn't need to pay for the song, copyright issues come into play. Various licensing plans have come into play, but after Sony's attempt to invoke a hardware solution (they included a bit of software in order to enforce CD copyrights that ended up effectively disconnecting CD-ROM drives and resulting in a class action suit against Sony) have made other companies nervous.

The iPod is an interesting piece of technology, and not just because of its portability. As any technology becomes more advanced, the more it can do as well. Even CD players never got past being able to play more than music; some iPods have already passed that with their multimedia capabilities. As technology continues to get smaller and branch out, it will be interesting to see where iPods will be in even a few years from now.

--
Mary Banas is a member of CoolUtils team.
Some may remember posing for an "impromptu" photo opportunity during every family gathering. You stood there frozen, with cemented smiles as you wondered if Aunt Thelma would ever take the photograph. Cheese...... then Bam! You were blinded by the bright flash bulb.

Auntie had the right idea. She wanted to memorialize every event. It didn't matter if the developed film never made it out of the card board envelopes. What was important is that she enjoyed taking photos. Amateur photographers everywhere are still snapping pictures as a favorite pastime.

Photography is a good means to chronicle someone's life. A picture tells a thousand words, so what an excellent way to document special moments, highlights and milestones. Over time, our memory isn't as iron-clad as it once was. With photographs you can still recall the special moment even when the memory fades.

Photography is good for your well being. Reflect on all the studies that talk about how beneficial laughter is to your health. Now consider your emotions when you see photos of a new baby, or a wedding, or any of the other adorable photos that are found in email in-boxes on a daily basis. They make you happy! Photos elicit positive emotions.

Think about the people who were in south Texas during the winter of 2004. I'm sure they were happy to be down there when they had snow for the first time in over 100 years. There were people outside taking pictures at midnight; what an opportunity!

Have you ever seen deer on the side of the road? Not too many bucks will stop long enough to be photographed. If you're fortunate enough to see sitting deer, you better hope to have a camera with you; as they likely won't be sitting there waiting for you the next time you drive by.

While some people still prefer film cameras, digital cameras now come in any size or budget. For the novice photographer who merely enjoys taking photographs as a way to relax or capture those one of a kind moments, suitable digital cameras are available for under $100.

Some people are still using 1.3 mega pixel digital cameras. By today's standard, that is considered a dinosaur. However it would still work if the photographer just wanted to take an occasional photo to list items for sale on eBay. Today many amateur photographers are using digital cameras with 4-6 mega pixels.

As a rule of thumb, the higher the mega pixel, the higher the price tag. Notwithstanding, higher mega pixel cameras also come with more bells and whistles and have a higher resolution. Most all digital cameras also have a timer and ability to make very small movie clips. Many also have zoom lens features.

With digital photography it is fun to play around with new technology. Create a screen saver of your best photo with ImageBox from CoolUtils. If you came back from Hawaii and have lots of great photos that you want not to just show to your friends but amaze them - make an astonishing slideshow. Imagine all pictures will be shown one by one with different effects, accompanied by music and your comments. With ImageBox every photo stops being a snapshot but becomes a living part of the presentation. Your friends will be amazed! Don't think about how difficult it is – you will create your first slideshow in 6 minutes.

There are software programs that allow you to make digital images look better than real life by removing unwanted blemishes, moles, or wrinkles. Experiment with the software to add or remove people or objects from the photo. New technology provides the ability to alter a photograph so that it looks like an oil painting, pencil sketch, negative, sepia, black and white, charcoal drawing and a plethora of other options.

While it is possible to make a living as a photographer, the majority of camera users simply take photos because they enjoy it. It's true that time will not stand still. The taunting school aged children had it right when they responded to stares, "Take a picture why don't you – it'll last longer!"

Now you do the same - stop reading and go take a picture... it'll last longer!

--
Mary Banas is a member of CoolUtils team.
No, I am not going to speak about medicines. Probably, they promise the easy way to relax (swallow a pill and relax) but we all know how harmful they can be to our health. The time people spend on relaxing activities has been lessening more and more today. The main reasons are increasingly demanding jobs and the pressures of modern society. And for these exactly reasons, the need for relaxation has become higher. There are, of course, many relaxation methods that one can use. Psychologists offer a wide range of them:
Going in for sports (at least twice a week)
Walking in the forest (15 minutes can be enough)
Sleeping in (not less than 10 hours)
Traveling (it takes time!)
Knitting (you may get a new sweater for yourself)
Meditation (requires at least half an hour)
Eat sweets, mostly chocolate (could be harmful to your body).
Talk to a friend (15 minutes chat)
Lots of puzzles: Word Search Puzzles, Jigsaw Puzzles, Crossword Puzzles (will take 15-50 minutes)
Watching your favorite movie (do you have 2 spare hours?)
All these relaxation techniques can help but they all require some free time. That is probably the biggest problem: above mentioned relaxation activities require you to dedicate time to them, and re-juggling your schedule just so you can relax can itself be stressful.
Is there a solution? Can a busy person relax not wasting time on relaxation? Sure, the answer is music.

Just think! Music is always accessible. Music has always been a regular part of human society, from prehistory and especially today. Humans, even with the simplest tools, naturally gravitate towards music and the creation of music—this says a lot about the nature of music and how it affects humans.

The mind and body responds and relaxes to music even in the midst of physically or mentally demanding activities. There is a lot of evidence that points to the beneficial effects of music on the mind and body (hence the existence of music therapy). The many effects of music on the mind and body has even warranted the existence of music psychology, a branch of psychology.

Music is the only tool for relaxation (and a very effective one) that you can take anywhere and use anywhere. With today’s modern technology, relaxing need not be something done to the exclusion of anything else. If you have a portable audio player, no matter where you are, you can listen to music and immediately start to relax. Even in the midst of work or some recreational activity (such as jogging or walking your dog) you can benefit from the relaxing effects of music. Note that the scientists proved that listening to background music even if you do not pay any attention to it can still be extremely powerful.

All you have to do is to buy an iPod or any mp3 player. Why those? Because they are far more convenient to use (small size and light weight) and you can fit more music on them (up to hundreds of albums of the music that you find relaxing). Now you can get your music everywhere with you and use its relaxation power whenever you like. Just rip your old CD’s and convert to mp3 format with Total Audio Converter. Now you can listen to your favorite music on your mp3 player.

By the way, the relaxation music is not necessarily slow tunes. You’d better listen to the music you like even if it is rock’n’roll than force yourself to relax listening to the music you hate. Everybody has his own relaxation music. Many people find the sounds of ocean waves or spring forest very suitable for a relaxation. You may download such tracks from the web, convert to the format your gadget supports with Total Audio Converter and enjoy it.

Listening to music can do wonders for a stressful life. Music gives wings to the mind and flight to the imagination. Take the advantage of modern technologies and enjoy music in your busiest life!

--
Mary Banas is a member of CoolUtils team.
