When starting out as a gardener, there's tons of stuff you don't as yet know. In fact, quite often you might not even realize what you don't know, which means it may not be a problem at the beginning. However, as your experience grows and you become anxious to try out new garden styles, various flowers, plants or shrubs, you'll realize you're going to have to start learning some gardening basics.

For instance, it's important to know in which garden zone you live in. In the United States -- and most parts of the world -- there are garden zones assigned, which makes it a somewhat easier to understand which types of flowers, plants, trees and shrubs grow well in your zone. These zones are separated based on how much heat an area gets, and when the first and last frost of each year take place.

Other factors contribute to the success or failure of growing flowers and other plants, however, including how much natural rain falls, the length of sunlight throughout the day, as well as the types of soils found in the area.

Due to these other factors, garden zones are just a baseline to get you started, but you may discover that some plants you've tried to grow may not always act the way you expect them to in your gardening zone. This is due to the differences within the same zone, and will depend on where you live. Each zone stretches across the country from the east to west coasts, with the lower zones being farther north, and the higher zones being south.

The same zone on the east coast is likely going to be slightly different than the desert southwest mainly because of differences in sun strength and the level of humidity. In addition, there can also be substantial differences in the types of soil naturally present in each area. Thus, while all plants are marked for which zones they'll grow in and how much sun they require, the same plant may perform quite differently in different parts of the country even if it's the same zone.

Here's a good general rule: if you can buy a plant or flower at your local garden center or nursery, chances are it will grow with relative success in your area.

It may be best to try and start with small seedling plants and then experiment with them in different areas of your garden. You may discover that the your first year planting pansies, for instance, they'll die quickly because they didn't appear to like the full sun location where they were planted. The following year, if you try another spot with less strong sunlight for so many hours of the day, they could thrive and grow much better.

Meanwhile, you may discover that Vincas grow and thrive in the hottest places in your yard, no matter how many hours the sun beats down on them.

If you want to discover which gardening zone you live in, do a search on the Internet, or ask at your local garden center or nursery. If you live at the edge of two zones, the good news is that you'll have many more plant varieties to experiment with in your garden because often you'll do well with plants that can grow well in both zones.

--
Glenn Cutforth is a writer, graphic designer and publisher of quality eBooks at MaxxPublishing.com.
Recent studies show that some 10 million plus home based businesses exist in the U.S alone. Within the top three are wholesale and retail trading, so creating and selling gift baskets would certainly be included in this group. This type of business would be especially attractive to an entrepreneur who would enjoy the freedom to express their creativity by assembling beautiful and unique gift baskets, in fact, this may be just the type of business that could work for you! There are already thousands of people providing this service, however, there are literally millions of busy people who rely on this kind of service, so there's plenty of room for you in the gift basket business. Here are a few tips to help you get started!

The first step is to create your Business Objective by clearly outlining the ideal situation for your gift basket business. What is your vision? Brainstorming is helpful at this point, and once this is accomplished, break it all down and define it from there. Use all or your ideas to inspire you to really do it! To get started with your own home based business, it's always wise to start small and create a short term plan for success, and develop this further with a long term plan? This helps to give you direction to take the required steps to actualize your dream of being a home based entrepreneur.

Next you'll want to try to understand your client base. Who are your target clients? Will it be working moms between the ages of 30-45, or maybe single executive types with lots of money and little time, or maybe a combination of the two. If you keep your offerings stylish and classic, you'll attract a wide array of clients who are drawn to the quality your products offer.

You'll want to also know your competition. There's a lot of them out there, but narrow it down to researching gift basket assembler websites with a similar vision as yours. Try to figure out how they're successful, how they present themselves and learn from your research. Take what you admire, and bring it up to the next level of uniqueness and quality. It will help your business grow if you can add something that set's you apart from the rest!

Think about the importance of marketing your product. Just because it's a home based business it doesn't mean you don't need creative advertising ideas. This is an area that pays to invest time and money into since a large portion of your capital needs to be used for advertising and promotion! Direct mailing in your area is an excellent place to start, as is donating a couple of finished baskets, with business card attached, to local charities for raffles. For a wider client base, you might consider developing a website to show off your samples to a potential world wide audience. This will also help your business grow if you want to expand your client base and have the facilities to ship your product throughout the U.S. and Canada or even further if you're really ambitious.

Always plan for ongoing client support. Your clients should still feel like you care, even after they've paid you. Be available for feedback which will help you figure out ways to ensure repeat business! People love a personal touch in a world that is increasingly impersonal.

These ideas should help to get you started being your own boss as a Gift Basket entrepreneur. Have confidence in yourself, have fun, and you'll soon begin to earn your own income from home!

--
Glenn Cutforth is a writer, graphic designer and publisher of quality eBooks at MaxxPublishing.com.Becoming an entrepreneur is one of the best ways to create wealth and freedom for yourself.
Don't Kill Your Houseplants

Most of us, at one time or another, have tried our hand at owning a house plant or two. Some thumbs are naturally a little greener than others, however, you can easily learn how to better care for your potted companions if you haven't been successful in the past. There are several common mistakes people make when it come to caring for houseplants -- the following should help you along nicely.

The first important requirement is adequate light. Without it, you'll have very little luck keeping your plants alive. Think ahead of time and determine where you'll put your plants so they can enjoy as much sunlight as possible. You may even have to move some around throughout the day as the sun moves around your home but the effort will pay off in the long run.

Next comes water. This in itself sounds simple enough, but the key is to strike a balance. Next is fertilizer, and then good soil. Fertilizer for nutrients, and good soil for a healthy root system and a decrease in disease.

Many plants have died many horrible deaths at our hands, preventable ones at that. We usually end up killing them with kindness, or neglect. We'll now dig a little deeper into how to stop killing your houseplants.

Over-watering is the most common problem for houseplants. It's often just a case of not knowing the specific plants water requirements. It pays to find out which species need and how often. Most plants only need to be watered once every five days or so. Always feel the soil to make sure it actually needs water.

Under-watering is another offender. The fact that we live busy lives is usually the reason. If you can write yourself a note, or even delegate the task, even if it's just checked every few days or so. You can even keep a vessel of water near the plants for convenience.

Poor soil quality, or the wrong type of soil is the next problem usually encountered. Some plants need different soil types then others. For instance, consider a cactus vs. a fern. A commercial potting soil is best to use for indoor planting. Stay away from soil from your garden, recycled soil and top soil. The main reason is a lack of proper nutrients, and potential disease lingering in the soil, especially garden soil. If you suspect a fungus problem, seek treatment immediately or it could spread.

Having your plants exposed to extreme temperatures can be a problem too. Never keep your plants on or close to heat sources, including vents and stoves. The same applies to cold extremes, so plants in window sills where frost lurks or in front of a fan are no-no's. Some plants do well in the moisture of a bathroom though, such as a fern -- so there are rare exceptions.

Lastly, over fertilizing your plants will surely kill them. In fact they're better off not being fertilized at all. Always use a houseplant appropriate fertilizer too.

It's relatively easy to take note of these plant saving tips. Adopt them into your routine, and you'll have a house full of healthy, happy plants!

--
Glenn Cutforth is a writer, graphic designer and publisher of quality eBooks at MaxxPublishing.com.
Dial-A-Spa: In Home Massage At Your Fingertips!

It's no secret that North Americans spend a large portion of their income on how they look and feel. Due to so many pressures, stress levels are at an all time high and so people are increasingly searching for ways to relax their body, mind and souls. However, since they have little time to spare, they also want these services to fit into their busy schedules -- which is where bringing those services to them comes in! The day spa industry has been growing at a steady rate for years, as we try to emulate what Europeans have known for centuries -- take care of yourself: look better, feel better and live longer!

A home business that has great potential to be quite profitable would be bringing spa services to a client's doorstep -- a "Dial-A-Spa" so to speak. What a convenient luxury for someone to just pick up the phone, and in the comfort of their own home, be pampered and massaged at their own convenience! This is as true for busy, single executives as it is for exhausted stay at home moms. Male and female, the client base would be a huge. Let's look at a few ideas on how to get started!

First, you have to decide on the types of services you'll be able to offer your clients. If you choose to specialize in massage, you'll have to decide what kind of massage. Aromatherapy is widely available at most spas. It's the safe use of essential oils coupled with massage. Depending on a particular ailment or other concerns, whether it's physical or emotional, an oil or mix of oils will be selected. Essential oils used in massage have been used successfully for thousands of years to provide an overall sense of well being. Of course you'll need to hire a trained, certified Aromatherapist to provide this service.

You can, of course, have a registered massage therapist as part of your core staff as well. These are highly trained individuals who've had extensive massage education, and provide body massage for specific periods of time. Usually the slots are in increments of 1/2 hour or an hour, but you may want to offer an express massage of say 15 minutes over a lunch break for someone really busy.

Other types of bodywork could include Thai massage, Thai yoga massage, Acupressure, Shiatsu and Reflexology. You'll have no trouble finding educated, experienced people to hire in all of these areas. However, always make sure you see their credentials, references and have them give you sample treatments to determine for sure if they're quality employees, as well as people you'd be proud to have representing your business.

The wonderful thing about this kind of business is the relatively low overhead. There will be start up costs, of course, but with spa services, you'll quickly see a profit. In the beginning, you could even take calls from a home business line yourself. A business line and appointment book are all you really need. You could always have a schedule set up using your computer as well if you prefer. That way you can neatly keep track of bookings and cancellations in one place. You will, of course, need to manage your money well. There is reasonably priced software that will do most of the work for you, or you can hire a bookkeeper part time to work with you to keep your finances in order.

When you determine your pricing, you'll find it's best to charge rates per service plus the cost of travel, and your portion of the service all rolled into one. Most people realize it costs more to have a service brought to their home, but be sure not to overcharge.

The most important part in setting up a home spa business is research and planning. Go online and do day spa searches. Look at popular services and find out what people want! Find similar services the same way and see what prices they charge and what they offer.

What you put into it is what you'll get out of it, so brainstorm, make contact with people in the field, and put it all together into your own profitable small business from home idea! You'll be amazed by, not only the personal satisfaction you receive from your own success, but all the monetary benefits that go with operating your own business!

--
Glenn Cutforth is a writer, graphic designer and publisher of quality eBooks at MaxxPublishing.com.Becoming an entrepreneur is one of the best ways to create wealth and freedom for yourself.
Increase Response From Email Subscribers: Whitelist Your IP Address!

Having your IP address on a white list is an important way to increase your response from your opt-in subscribers. First though, you need to understand the difference between a white list and a black list. Blacklists are lists of alleged or identified people who knowingly send out spam. This is a list you must avoid being put on at all cost! The white list, on the other hand, is a list of credible opt-in mailers. A list you definitely do want to be on!

Internet Service Providers battle constantly with trying to eradicate spam! It's a daily problem which compromises up to half of all email messages they handle! If you're ever accused of "spamming", you run a high risk of losing your IP address and email. Whitelisting means you have a list of ISP's and/or email addresses that are never refused on the first try, in other words -- a darn good list!

If you wish to give your server a break and cut back on it's mail load, use the white listing feature. It will also automatically tell you if incoming email is legitimate. Mail addressed to random names at your domain will be discarded. Let's face it, any feature that helps to cut out spam is a good feature!

Whitelisting is the only way to completely block out spam. Traditional anti-spam filters compare incoming emails with spam content patterns. These patterns are derived from past spam mailings, so only very obvious or unoriginal spam will be caught. Whitelisting can sniff out even the most creative spammers!

The concept of white listing is simple. Mail will only be delivered if it's from a trustworthy source. The list will contain every email address in your business and personal directory, or any address you put on the list. It's completely in your control! If you choose this route, you should have at least one mail drop box besides your inbox. This allows for any incoming mail from someone you don't know, which you may actually welcome, to be handled in a more secure manner.

With whitelisting, you'll need to ensure that leads put their sending address in the proper place when signing up with you. This is especially true if they themselves have address filters or content blockers in place. You need to get that first mailing out successfully! Make sure your leads understand where to put your address and domain name during sign up -- post it clearly! You'll want to avoid sending too may emails to the same ISP at the same time. Even too many emails with the same heading may become suspect, and you could wind up having to defend your intentions.

Lastly, you may want to urge new subscribers to white list your address. Post directions or a link on your site to quickly and easily point them in the right direction. Ideally, you'll want to do this before your first mailing, including the confirmation. If you follow these tried and true steps in white listing, it will not only keep you and your leads reliable, but will ensure fewer hassles and more business in the future.

--
Glenn Cutforth is a writer, graphic designer and publisher of quality eBooks at MaxxPublishing.com.
Getting Your Stamp Collection Started

Stamp collecting is definitely a fun and interesting hobby for those who get the bug. It gives you an opportunity to collect tiny pieces of history from all over the world. You might even consider them as little artifacts that open up a new world of exploration. By following a few of these suggestions, you'll be on your way to an enriching and past time.

First, you'll need to decide if you'd like to choose a theme for collecting, such as a specific group of countries or a timeline, perhaps only stamps with animals depicted or nature scenes. It's up to you, and the choices are virtually endless. Then again, having a "general" collection of everything is a great choice too!

You may want to start out by purchasing sheets of new stamps, maybe even from specific countries. You could even ask family and friends to save stamps for you from their mail. This is a good, easy way to begin your collection. It adds meaning to your stamps too if you receive some from someone who's important to you.

Once the word is out about your new hobby, you'll probably receive gifts of stamps for holidays and birthdays. This will help your collection grow, and special limited edition and commemorative stamps may be acquired too.

You can then begin to narrow down what your preferences are. Do you prefer old stamps over new? New stamps are easier to find, but if you're up for a challenge, old stamps are exciting to try to track down. Save any you don't want to keep for trading with other collectors down the road.

Gathering supplies is an important step as well. You'll want to keep your stamps in order and in good condition. A loose leaf binder with plastic removable pockets, small glassine envelopes and stamp tongs for gentle handling are all important tools you should acquire. Eventually you'll want to have a magnifying glass to inspect stamps closely, and stamp books or catalogue with information about stamps available.

Be careful when removing stamps from envelopes. Carefully steam the stamp off over a bowl of water, and peel off with stamp tongs. Let it dry before storing it.

The internet is the single most useful resource to get started. Stamp collection clubs, organizations, blogs and classifieds are all excellent places to begin.

Once you have a collection you're proud of, show it off to friends and family! Maybe one day you can even start your own website on the subject. Have your stamps displayed with stories on how you acquired them or start your own discussion board. Whatever you do, have fun and happy collecting!

--
Glenn Cutforth is a writer, and graphic designer and publisher of quality eBooks at MaxxPublishing.com.
When you're starting your online business, you'll need to take the time to figure out who your target audience is, an essential tool in creating a successful business of any kind. From there, you'll decide how to market your product or service to that particular group of people. If you choose to send emails, be patient! It takes time for businesses to build trust and be recognized as an authority, so continue sending out special offers and articles. In time, your response rate will increase and you'll be glad you did!

Here are a few ways you can increase interested click-thrus, while boosting your product or service recognition.

eBooks

Serial eBooks are a great way to keep your audience hooked to your website or email. eBooks are mailed out or posted a chapter at a time, much like a soap opera. This appeals to more then one type of person, and it adds to the mystery and keeps them guessing with pieces of the story instead of the everything at once. Remember when Stephen King did this with great success a few years ago?

eBooks are convenient and increasing in popularity as tools to keep an opt-in list loyal, however, your eBook should tie in with your product or service to appeal to the visitors who come to your site. For example, if you're selling bath and beauty products, you could post an ongoing saga about a woman who finally puts herself first, and begins treating herself like a queen! Of course she eventually discovers the bliss of soaking in your luxury bath salts! Use your imagination because the possibilities are as endless as your creativity permits.

Newsletters

A newsletter adds a personal touch to your business by showing clients behind the scenes of your business with photos of you and your staff, your office, even your family and pets. You can include data on how your product relates to the market, as well as updates on new products in the works along with special offers and discounts! You may decide to send out samples to people who subscribe, or have contests and giveaways that feature gift baskets full of your products. An important feature of a newsletter is testimonials. With permission, you can include photos with endorsements, something people love to see! All of this builds trust with your clients and will pay off with higher word of mouth recommendations, the very best form of free advertising available to you. So make sure you encourage your subscribers to pass your newsletter on to their friends.

Seasons Greetings

During holiday time your leads may be too busy to really think about your product. This is when the timing of your emails is especially important! Promote your product or service as the perfect gift. Create special holiday offers, or gifts with each purchase. People love that! Be sure to address the client individually with the correct spelling of their name. This adds a degree of warmth and a personal touch.

Seasonal Emails

Seasonal emails, unlike season's greetings, are literally about the season at hand. For example ... don't miss our "Get out of the house and into the sunshine" welcome summer event! These are perfect opportunities to launch new products, as people are usually looking for something new with the change in the season. Time these "flyer" type emails with utmost care. They should arrive prior to the season beginning by about a month. You'd be surprised how people come to look forward to these special promos and, over time, may even write to scold you if you're ever late!

Calendars And Schedules

These are excellent ways to keep your opt-in list interested! If you have a Lawn and Garden business, send out a calendar with specific days to begin digging, planting or starting seeds! You can include marked days of sales you plan to offer, and then send follow up emails about the same sale just before the actual date arrives. You could mark the dates of seminars you plan to hold either on site or online! How-to seminars are well received and can definitely increase traffic to your business.

So, you can see how important it is to invest time into keeping your clients and potential clients interested in your product or service. The more you do to promote them, the more people will become familiar with them and this will increase your reputation as a trusted authority. Personalizing your contact methods will have huge payoffs because people love feeling as if you're speaking directly to them. Try some of these ideas on your own website and you'll see how they'll benefit you now, and in the future.

--
Glenn Cutforth is a writer, graphic designer and publisher of quality eBooks at MaxxPublishing.com.
Gardening time is here again! You have grandiose visions of a lush green paradise, picturesque flower beds and picture perfect tomatoes and other vegetables. You see yourself lazing in a hammock with a good book, and breezy summer nights with neighbors jealous of your good fortune. Right? Well, something like that, I'm sure.

However, the reality is that patch of dirt staring back at you is saying something altogether different. It's reminding you of the sweat, time and planning it takes to really have a good garden. It's also telling you to learn from the mistakes you made last year.

You don't need to have unrealistic design abilities to have a stunning array of flora to call your own, either. Just a basic understanding of the soil, the needs of each plant, and the watering patterns in your yard.

You can begin with a basic shape for your garden. Once you have that in mind, draw it out on paper and make a rough draft of a general plan. This must include some focal points. These are very important as it draws the admirers eyes to these features of your garden. They should be proportionate in size with the rest of your garden and, if done well, can really strike a balance.

Think of whether or not you'll be entertaining. Will there be a permanent stone BBQ? Perhaps a pond? An outdoor bar? These can be considered focal points and you must have a place for them and plant around accordingly. You want a continuous flow, not awkward broken up areas.

The makeup of your soil Garden sculpturesis important to understand. You can have your soil tested to see what it's missing nutrient-wise. Usually all it needs is to be well worked with a hoe or a small cultivator with well rotted compost mixed in. You'll want to ensure that all sprinklers are working and there aren't any leaks. In ground sprinkler systems are very pricey, but if you have them, consider yourself lucky!

Now that your soil is prepared, sketch out your focal points. Will it be a stone BBQ? Or maybe a fountain-attached or free standing. A small gurgling pond will attract pleasant sounding frogs and fish are a welcome addition for a point of interest. Garden sculptures come in many beautiful varieties as well.

When choosing the surrounding plants, keep in mind that taller plants should be in the back, and smaller ones in front. Know which ones spread significantly and these can make good groundcover and filler.
Summertime and the livin’ is easy. Freedom from your desk and homework, and a whole season to do what you want. With school out for the summer, it's a life of leisure for the next few months when you’re a teenager -- not! Let's face it, it usually doesn’t take long for boredom to set in, and a lack of spending money. While working during the summer months at a fast food restaurant or in a mall is fine, why not try your hand at starting your own small business? You can be your own boss, set your own hours and best of all, there's no limit to the amount of money you can earn!

Here are a few suggestions for services you can offer during the long days of summer.

1) Babysitting/Child Care: Looking after little kids in your neighborhood is an ideal way to start saving money. You likely know parents who would love to have you look after their kids while they’re at work, or perhaps if they want to get out on weekend nights. Some may even offer live in situations where you stay for the summer during the week and go home on weekends. This is usually because the parent has long working hours. They may need a hand with some light housekeeping and putting meals together as well!

If you choose babysitting, the amount of time you dedicate is up to you. If you babysit through the day, five days per week, you’ll most likely receive a weekly set amount, with overtime for later nights. With this schedule, you’ll still have your evenings and weekends free. You may want to take a quick babysitting course, or maybe you already have.

2) Lawn Mowing Services: Elderly people will really appreciate this service, especially during the hot days of summer! When people come home from work, other things take up their time, such as dealing with their children and other household chores. Having someone mow the grass once a week can go a long way to help make their lives much easier! How much you change will depend on the size of the lawn, of course and the equipment you have available to do the job. However, keep in mind that if you're using the homeowner's equipment, most lawns shouldn't take more than an hour to do, so charge accordingly.

3) Pet Sitting or Dog Walking Service: Some pet owners who work long hours are often too busy to take care of their pets as well as they'd like to and they'd be more than happy to have someone available to keep their pet company and do little tasks they don't always have time to do. They may want you to just pop in to let the dog out or take them for a walk or, if they're going on vacation, maybe stay for a week. Whatever the terms, many people own pets, and to have someone willing to take care of them takes away a lot of stress for them, and their beloved animals.

These are only a few ideas to get you started, you may have other interests or skills you can use to earn some extra money during the long summer vacation. Just make sure you pick something you actually enjoy doing. This makes it a fun and while you have the freedom of being your own boss, you'll also experience the satisfaction of accomplishing something on your own. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you do each job to the best of your abilities, which will ensure good word of mouth that will lead to more work in the future.

Earning money is only one of the advantages to starting your own small business during your summer vacation. You’ll also learn new skills, meet new people and build confidence in your abilities -- important character builders that will stay with you throughout the long life ahead of you!

--
Glenn Cutforth is a writer, graphic designer and publisher of quality eBooks at MaxxPublishing.com.Becoming an entrepreneur is one of the best ways to create wealth and freedom for yourself.
Current statistics indicate, that home based businesses are among one of the fastest growing sectors of the U.S. economy. Millions of people have discovered the freedom and convenience working from home can bring them. As long as you get your work done, you can create your own work schedule, and the only person you have to answer to, is you! You may just need a little inspiration and guidance to help you decide which home based business might work for you. Let’s look at some basic steps you should take to reach your goal of working for yourself.

The first thing to do is brainstorm. Write down any idea you have about anything you’re good at. Do you have a particular skill or talent? Write it down! Even if you don’t think you’re strong in many areas, perhaps you’re a fast learner. Everyone has something they can do. Find that something by narrowing down your ideas to the ones you’re drawn to the most. It has to be something you’ll enjoy, because loving something will drive you to work hard at it to make it work, even if it takes time.

Once you've decided what you can offer, whether it’s a product, or a service or both, you must do a lot of research. For instance, who are your competitors? Explore their websites and ideas. What can you offer that they don’t? There’s always something you can do to make your business a little more unique then someone else’s. Be creative with this one! Don’t discount any of your ideas as worthless or silly.

What’s in a name? A lot! Use your brain power and think of a good name for your business that could draw people in. Compile a list of everything that pops into your head, and then do internet search engine searches to see if these names are taken, and in what capacity. It doesn’t cost too much to copyright a business name, and if you have a good one -- do it quickly!

Designing your website is very important! If you happen to know someone who can help you, it doesn't hurt to take advantage of that golden opportunity! Hiring a website designer can cost a bundle. If you have a budget for it, ask for quotes and make sure you see samples of work done previously. Otherwise, you’ll have to try to do it yourself, which isn't impossible. If you’re ambitious, there’s software and free website templates available to help you along. Think it through. People shop with their eyes first, so to speak.

You’ll want to have your business name in as many places as you can, and free is best! Try search engine listings such as Google, Yahoo, AOL, and MSN. Learn the basics of search engine optimization because, again, this is a huge component in attracting clients to your site.

The most important thing is to take your time! Do it properly. You want to spend time ironing out every last detail before launching an online business. You, of course, can always improve as you go along, but try to be as polished as possible to make an immediate positive impression on prospective clients. This means you should read all you can about starting online businesses, and the particular kind of business you wish to start. Attend any seminars or free lectures offered at libraries, convention centers or universities. Sometimes you can sit in for free in accredited university courses, as long as you don’t expect a credit. Knowledge is power!

Hopefully you’ve found something here to inspire you to begin your journey. Believe in yourself, love what you do, and chances are with hard work and determination you’ll be successful with your online home business dream!

--
Glenn Cutforth is a writer, graphic designer and publisher of quality eBooks at MaxxPublishing.com.
