This figure includes tea, coffee, and other fluids and also includes fluid that is naturally contained in food. You would assume that, with the amount of advice freely abounding, people would be able to follow instructions and lose their excess weight. In the majority of cases, however, this simply does not happen. But, why? What makes it so difficult to lose weight? After all, you would assume that, if a person wants to lose weight that much, then they would be able to set their minds to it, follow the rules and watch the scales creep down along with the clothes sizes. When you consider how much carrying around excess weight affects a person, apart from physically, reducing a person's self-esteem so dramatically, you would assume that losing weight would be - well, not so much a doddle, but fairly straightforward. So, why isn't it?<br /><br />There really is no single answer. It could be an unrealistic weight loss plan, or it could be unrealistic expectations. <description><![CDATA[ In the United States over 60% of people are overweight and 30% of those are described as being obese. The figures in the UK do not read much better, where 43% of men and 33% of women are overweight. In addition to this, however, in the UK an extra 23% of women are classed as obese as are 22% of men. Age does have an impact on weight gain, with 77% of men in the 64 - 75 age range overweight and 71% of women. Too much body fat is not just a cosmetic problem. In the UK alone, according to a report in the Daily Mail newspaper, 1 in 11 deaths can be directly attributed to carrying too much weight. The figure of 300,000 adults dying from fat-related illnesses has been released in the United States. Studies undertaken by the Childhood Obesity Statistics notes that obesity figures in children is heading towards epidemic proportions.<br /><br />The problem is almost too big to conceive and it is escalating, with the number of vastly overweight children hitting the news more and more frequently. It has been acknowledged that overweight runs in families, either through inherited poor nutrition or lack of sufficient exercise, but despite it always being thought that children would grow out of their 'puppy fat', these days, children rarely do and go on to become overweight, and often unhealthy, adults, passing their poor nutritional habits on to their children. In the end, it is hardly feasible. <br /><br />A huge part of the problem is the pace of life in the 21st century, usually with both adults in a household working from early morning and returning home to children, housework, cooking and attempting to maintain some degree of family life amongst this daily maelstrom. In the end everybody ends up exhausted and too tired to do much more than flop in front of the television, despite the fact that they know it is not a good idea to be so indolent. Food is eaten quickly, food shopping is undertaken in a hurry and fattening processed foods full of saturated fats are the easiest to prepare quickly and are often the basic ingredients in many of the ready meals marketed for busy families.<br /><br />It is hardly surprising that after failure follows failure overweight people either completely give up trying to lose weight, or they turn to alternatives such as hypnosis and acupuncture or to dietary supplements and finally, to bariatric surgery - a last resort which has seen many successes since it increased in popularity. <description><![CDATA[ Following a weight loss plan, to some people, is almost like manufacturing a reason to make excuses. It was always the most common subject of conversation in the office where I used to work: if the subject wasn't the red day/green day discussion, a common mantra was 'food makes me happy. I'll just have one slice of cake/chocolate. That won't really matter' and, in the next breath, 'I went shopping the other day and the only dress I could find for the office party was in a size 18. So I didn't buy it'. Excuses such as these prevent us from following a weight loss plan and, before long, dropping our newly formed diet routine and starting to 'eat normally' again, putting on even more weight and becoming despondent.<br /><br />So, how do we break the circle? Nobody pretends that following a weight loss plan is an easy option and you obviously do have to apply some discipline. There is a swathe of excuses from not having time to exercise (often true in most cases in this busy world) to having too little time to prepare healthy meals (again, at face value, often a genuine excuse). But, that is what they are, no matter how valid - excuses! Excuses can be overcome with a bit of forethought and a bit of discipline.<br /><br />How about being afraid of failing so you don't start a weight loss plan in the first place? That is more common than you would think. You do need discipline of thought as well as action and, changing the way you think into a more positive mindset will help to increase your self-esteem and reduce the excuses. If losing weight is important to you, then you will find ways around the problems such as not having time to exercise or eat healthy food. An odd fact of life is, if you want something doing, ask a busy person! You will find that as you get into the routine of regular exercise, you will feel more energetic and get more things done. <br /><br />Understanding the reason for making weight loss excuses helps to discipline yourself. You could join one of the many support groups if you are a 'joining sort of person'. Personally, I am not but, for others, this support is very successful.
