<description><![CDATA[ What is Web 2.0<br />Originally in 2004, Web 2.0 was referred to as this idea of the "Web as a platform". The concept was such that instead of thinking of the Web as a place where browsers viewed data through small windows on the readers' screens, the Web was actually the platform that allowed people to get things done. But this really didn't catch on. In fact, it's fairly hard to grasp what that really means.<br />Later people started thinking of Web 2.0 as the programming tools used to create the Web pages that were considered "cutting edge Web 2.0". This included AJAX and SOAP and other XML and JavaScript applications that allowed the readers to actually interact with the Web pages more like you would with an application on your desktop.<br />Now Web 2.0 is really starting to mean a combination of the technology (like AJAX) allowing the customers to actually interact with the information. Web 2.0 is starting to mean the situation where amateur writers and developers are able to create applications and Web sites that get more credibility than traditional news sources and software vendors. This combination of powerful JavaScript tools like AJAX enabling nearly anyone to contribute to and interact with the data that we are all working with is really what Web 2.0 is.<br />But is This Really New?<br />No.<br /><br /><br /><br />AJAX<br />JavaScript and XML have been around nearly as long as HTML and many sites have been using both to good effect. As Paul Graham said, "Basically, what 'Ajax' means is 'Javascript now works.'" This means that Web applications can now be created that interact with the users the way we have become acustomed with desktop applications. The lag and delay caused by server calls is mitigated by a lot of that information being sent asynchronously through JavaScript calls.<br />Democracy and Community<br />These have both been around in limited formats for a long time on the Web. What makes them exciting is when they are combined with the applications that are possible with AJAX and more modern browsers. Web pages gave people the ability to express themselves like no other time in history. And Weblogs made an easy thing even easier. When Blogger was first set up, they thought of themselves as just an easy-to-use FTP client for Web pages. Now they allow many many people to get online and express their views.<br />But it's more than just getting content on-line. With Web 2.0 type sites, it is possible to combine data from various sources, even sources that you don't own control or even exist, and turn that into data that people can use. For example, an idea for a Web 2.0 site might be to combine a Flickr tagged gallery of restaurants with actual reviews that people have written about those restaurants and a connection to Google Maps to find the restaurants in your area. <description><![CDATA[ "CNAC will submit its offer in line with its promise," a company official, who declined to be identified, told XFN-Asia.<br />CNAC said earlier this week that it will offer at least 5.0 hkd per China Eastern share if the latter's proposed sale of a 24 pct stake to Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Temasek falls through.<br />State-owned CNAC is unlisted and not bound to follow through on an offer. China Eastern has complained that CNAC never made a formal offer and has never approached management to discuss its proposals directly.<br />CNAC's statements were sufficient to persuade China Eastern's minority shareholders to yesterday reject SIA's significantly lower bid of 3.80 hkd per share.<br />Over 77 pct of minority shareholders who attended the vote rejected SIA's bid.<br />The decision brought about an angry reaction from China Eastern chairman Li Fenghua, who said that the carrier would not consider doing a deal with its rival, Air China. Li said China Eastern's management would continue to work for a deal with SIA, its preferred choice of partner.<br />Shares in China Eastern were volatile today after analysts warned that CNAC's counterbid will take a long time to process, owing to the differences between the managements of both companies.<br />China Eastern shares were trading at 6.66 hkd this afternoon after swinging between 6.93 and 6.40 hkd earlier in the day. <br />Xinhua Index (FXI) said that it will add Air China to its FTSE Xinhua China 25 index, replacing CITIC Pacific.<br />Shares in Chinese airline operators Air China Ltd and China Eastern Airlines Corp rose in late Monday morning trade on hopes that the mainland's biggest international carrier will contest Singapore Airlines' bid to buy a stake in China Eastern.<br />Hopes grew on market talk that Air China's chairman, Li Jiaxiang, will replace Yang Yuanyuan as the new director of the General Administration of Civil Aviation.<br />The appointment is expected to put Air China in a better position to quash the Singapore Airlines-Temasek bid to acquire a 24 percent stake in China Eastern, industry watchers said.<br />"We believe Mr Li will continue to push hard for Air China's M&A with China Eastern in this new role," said Ally Ma, analyst with Citigroup.<br />"Moreover, his promotion reflects senior government support of Mr Li's strategy of enhancing Chinese airlines' competitiveness through industry consolidation." <br />Other analysts said Li may not directly interfere with the deal in his position as a regulator but the appointment is seen as negative to investor sentiment on the China Eastern-Singapore Airlines deal.<br />Air China's parent, China National Aviation Corp (CNAC), a minority shareholder in China Eastern Airlines, recently increased its stake in the smaller carrier to 12 percent from 10.<br />Earlier CNAC and Air China's partner Cathay Pacific Airways suspended their plan to make a counter bid for China Eastern Airlines under likely pressure from the government, which is interested in forging a better relationship with Singapore authorities through the strategic sale of shares in China Eastern.<br />Although it has said that it is still deliberating whether to thwart the Singapore Airlines-Temasek bid, CNAC is widely expected to oppose the deal when minority shareholders vote on it on January 8. <br />Air China and Cathay may try to outbid Singapore Airlines-Temasek's proposal of 3.80 Hong Kong dollars a share for the China Eastern stake, and much more substantial synergies between the three parties could be expected, Citi's Ma said.<br />Air China's Li has been a proponent of the "super carrier" consolidation plan for Chinese airlines, which will see major carriers pool their resources to fight international competition.<br /><br />--<br />Stella Huang is the author of <a>“Air China Article</a><br><br>Source: <a href="http://www.articletrader.com/">http://www.articletrader.com</a> ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ As <a href="http://peanuts.aero/low_cost_airline_news/">Southwest Airlines</a> is so often used as the "model" for new startups - even many which resemble it in little more than calling themselves low cost and charging low fares until they go bankrupt - this is a good place to address some of the fundamentals which made Southwest so different from its predecessors. Many of the features seem obvious today, especially with the benefit of hindsight and many variants on the theme. <br />"Better quality + lesser price = value + spiritual attitude of our employees = unbeatable." Herb Kelleher on Southwest Airlines' success formula<br />Perhaps what is most interesting about Southwest is that it was not really "discovered" as a desirable model in the US until after September 2001, when legacy carriers began to deal seriously with the prospect of long term lower yields which exceeded their entrenched costs.<br />But Southwest too is evolving in ways which its originators would have found heretical in the early days. Now it is one of the largest airlines in the US and is increasingly coming up against imitators that are smart, aggressive and well funded. Southwest has had a dream run through a recent period of high fuel costs thanks to its hedging strategy. But those hedge positions are diminishing in scale and will by 2009 be over entirely. This situation coupled with the carrier's growth rate - it firmed up options for 79 B737s, adding them to existing orders and its current 452-strong fleet - puts the carrier in a dominant position it has not been accustomed to.<br />Some of the key ingredients of the Southwest success (and yardsticks to measure how the model is changing):<br />o Innovative labour agreements leading to high productivity. Productivity was traditionally higher than elsewhere, with pilots flying an average of 70-75 hours a month compared with 40-50 hours then or conventional operators. A landmark 1994 10-year agreement with pilots provided stock options in place of wage increases. Pilots taking up the offer benefited from the growth in share value. Each original pilot would now hold stock worth around USD1 million. Southwest also reinforced the loyalty of its pilots by maintaining schedules and not furloughing any of them following September 11 (unlike most other publicly-listed US carriers)<br />o Minimal distribution costs. Southwest was one of the first to focus on reducing distribution costs, for example using reservation centres to avoid agency costs, and was an early uptaker of the internet as a direct selling option.<br />o Operation of a uniform aircraft type. Southwest flies only a single type, B737 series aircraft equipped with GE engines. This reduces maintenance costs, allows for lower spare parts inventory and minimises training costs.<br />o Emphasis on aircraft ownership. Southwest owned or holds on capital leases three quarters of its fleet, with the remainder on operating leases. While this imposes a burden in debt-related areas, it builds a saleable asset base for the airline and reduces the drain on its operating cash flow.<br />o Use of a ticketless booking system. Southwest was one of the first operators to eliminate paper boarding passes, instead providing plastic, reusable passes to passengers. <br />o Outsourcing benefits. Southwest was an early aggressive user of external contractors to provide component maintenance, engine support and management of office materials. These arrangements generated direct savings and ensured tight control over inventory (eg flight equipment expendable parts, materials and supplies). Southwest consolidated engine repair work for its B737-300s and -500s with GE Engines under a long-term contract which expires this year. GE is paid on a rate per flight hour basis under terms which substantially reduce maintenance overheads but maintain aircraft reliability. The airline also has outsourced the management of office and industrial product supplies, so that all materials are sourced through one supplier for delivery to all cities in the Southwest network. <br />o No frills on-board service. Southwest pioneered the "no frills" single class service, serving only peanuts, snacks and beverages. <br />o High aircraft utilisation. In a US environment which increasingly focussed on hub operations after deregulation, most airlines concentrated on hub connections rather than increasing utilisation. Southwest achieved an average of eight sectors a day per aircraft, and a daily utilisation rate of 11-12 hours, then about 3-4 hours more than its full service competitors. <description><![CDATA[ A content management system (CMS) Sydney is a system used to manage the content of a Web site. Content management systems are deployed primarily for interactive use by a potentially large number of contributors. Web content management systems are often used for storing, controlling, versioning, and publishing industry-specific documentation such as news articles, operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, and marketing brochures. <br /><br />The intent of web design is to create a web site -- a collection of electronic files that reside on a web server/servers and present content and interactive features/interfaces to the end user in form of Web pages once requested. Such elements as text, bit-mapped images (GIFs, JPEGs, PNGs), forms can be placed on the page using HTML/XHTML/XML tags. Displaying more complex media (vector graphics, animations, videos, sounds) requires plug-ins such as Flash, QuickTime, Java run-time environment, etc. Plug-ins are also embedded into web page by using HTML/XHTML tags.<br />Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, published a website in August 1991. Berners-Lee was the first to combine Internet communication (which had been carrying email and the Usenet for decades) with hypertext (which had also been around for decades, but limited to browsing information stored on a single computer, such as interactive CD-ROM design). Websites are written in a markup language called HTML, and early versions of HTML were very basic, only giving websites basic structure (headings and paragraphs), and the ability to link using hypertext. This was new and different to existing forms of communication - users could easily navigate to other pages by following hyperlinks from page to page.<br /><br />Improvements in browsers' compliance with W3C standards prompted a widespread acceptance and usage of XHTML/XML in conjunction with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to position and manipulate web page elements and objects. Latest standards and proposals aim at leading to browsers' ability to deliver a wide variety of media and accessibility options to the client possibly without employing plug-ins.<br />Typically web pages are classified as static or dynamic.<br /><br />Static pages don't change content and layout with every request unless a human (web master/programmer) manually updates the page.<br />Dynamic pages adapt their content and/or appearance depending on end-user's input/interaction or changes in the computing environment (user, time, database modifications, etc.) Content can be changed on the client side (end-user's computer) by using client-side scripting languages (JavaScript, JScript, Actionscript, etc.) to alter DOM elements (DHTML). Dynamic content is often compiled on the server utilizing server-side scripting languages (Coldfusion, ASP, JSP, Perl, PHP, Python, etc.). <title>Ryanair - the juggernaut continues</title>

<description><![CDATA[ Ryanair's Head of Communications, Peter Sherrard said: "In 2007, Ryanair will carry 13 million passengers through Irish Airports generating a visitor spend of EUR1.4 billion for the Irish tourism industry, while sustaining 13,000 jobs in the tourism sector."<br />Low fare growth is the most important driver of Irish tourism however this is now being threatened by rip off price hikes at the DAA monopoly, which are being rubber stamped by a failed Government regulator. To continue to grow, the Irish tourism industry needs competition at the DAA monopoly, not rip off passenger price hikes at its biggest airport".<br />Ryanair seemingly makes a point of delivering the least pleasant flying experience possible (eg removing window shades and recline features from its aircraft) and exploring new boundaries of political incorrectness. Its public row over accommodating disabled passengers and its perpetual war with airport authorities over charges are just two examples. <br />However, every year it delivers results that its shareholders love: its 3 pt drop in net profit margin last year still yielded a result of 18, British Airways' 6.<br />The carrier achieves these results by focusing like a laser on costs and maintaining an aggressive growth pattern. While other carriers, including chief rival easyJet, have a more revenue-focused business model, for Ryanair it is all about costs; thus the stripped-down service and the usage of secondary airports.<br />A key way it keeps expenditure low is by constantly growing, spreading its fixed costs over a wider base. This winter it plans to add two more bases to the 16 it has spread throughout Europe, with Marseilles (added in May-06 and from which it serves three north African cities) the most recent. Speaking of where to install its constantly growing fleet of B737s - of which it has 135 on order - the company says: "Vast swathes of Europe remain empty." <br />Outlook bright for low cost standard-bearer<br />As long as the carrier keeps its fares lower than anyone else, the Irish LCC will maintain its 25% annual passenger growth (42 million forecast for 2006). And, with ancillary revenues growing faster than ticket revenues, continued profitability seems virtually assured.<br />Ryanair issued 2007 traffic statistics for its Irish routes, which show that Ryanair will carry a record 13 million passengers to/from seven Irish airports in 2007.
