Looking for a place to enjoy a good beer after a round of golf on your next Asheville, North Carolina golf vacation? If so, you will not have to search long or hard to find one. Head to downtown Asheville, pull up a barstool in one of the pubs we suggest and you will find a multitude of beers and beer styles to quench your thirst.

On our last trip to this eclectic North Carolina mountain town, the weather was not going to let anyone get in a round of golf. So instead of teeing it up, the crew of PerfectGolfVacations.com took in a few rounds at the local downtown pubs. And in case you want to pack the cooler for your next round of golf in Asheville, we even ran across a great little beer store that specializes in high-gravity beers.

Our day began in search of a bite to eat and a good, cold microbrew. The Bier Garden on Haywood Street claimed to have the largest selection of beer in Western North Carolina so that seemed like a logical place to start. We made the right choice.

There was a multitude of televisions in the bar area showing sports, a good selection of items on the food menu and a beer menu with around 200 selections. To be honest even though the food was quite good, I can not remember what I ate for lunch but definitely remember the brews. After enjoying a Fullers London Porter and a Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, we paid our tab and continued to the next stop.

There is a local Asheville pub called Jack of the Wood that brews their own beer so we decided to drop in for a taste. After the short walk through wind and rain, we came upon the Celtic style pub located on Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville.

Unlike the well-lit, open-spaced, sports-bar feel of the Bier Garden, Jack of the Wood offers patrons a dark, cozy atmosphere and four or five beer styles brewed under the moniker of Green Man Brewing. After sampling a couple of ales and quite a few stouts, we noticed the weather was letting up so we decided to walk back to our downtown Asheville hotel.

On the return trip, we ran across a tiny little beer-lover's paradise called Bruisin' Ales. This beer store is located on Broadway Street in downtown Asheville and offers visitors over 450 different beer choices along with beer glasses and other beer-related goodies. If you are a fan of high-gravity beers, then this is a must-stop for you. In fact before leaving town, our credit card got quite a workout at Bruisin Ales.

There are a multitude of places to have a good beer in downtown Asheville. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to hit them all. Along with the places we dropped in, we would also suggest following your thirst to The Mellow Mushroom and Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria.

So the next time you book one of our Asheville, NC discount golf packages or travel to this Western North Carolina town for a vacation getaway and are looking for a good beer, we recommend you head to downtown Asheville and pull up to the bar at one of the pubs mentioned above.

Copyright 2007 Evans Putman and http://www.perfectgolfvacations.com - All Rights Reserved.
Recommend Asheville's Renaissance Hotel - No Way

If you are a stickler for service, then the Renaissance in downtown Asheville North Carolina may not be the hotel for you on your next golf vacation. When we travel to Asheville, NC on golf vacations or any other vacation, the downtown area is our favorite lodging location. There are a multitude of great restaurants, bars, shopping and other entertainment options all within walking distance. However, there are a limited amount of hotel and lodging options in downtown Asheville.

On our last trip to this city nestled in the North Carolina mountains, we at http://www.PerfectGolfVacations.com chose to stay at the Renaissance hotel. This Asheville, NC hotel regularly receives high marks but it also charges high rates. Our nightly rate was slightly above $200 before taxes.

The outside design of this downtown Asheville hotel reflects an era gone by but the interior is modern and luxurious. The lobby is spacious and provides a comfortable seating area adjacent to an inside bar. There is also a nice outside patio for relaxing in the cool mountain air. Our room had amazingly comfortable beds, flat screen televisions and provided plenty of space. In simple terms, the atmosphere and facilities are first-class. Unfortunately, our experience with the hotel staff and the service they provided was more like no-class.

We travel often to research golf vacation locations and the local area and understand that everyone and every place can experience a bad day. Usually with an apology and a smile almost anything can be forgiven and rectified. However what we experienced at the Renaissance was borderline ridiculous for any service-oriented business and unforgivable for a hotel that charges over $200 a night.

Before departing on our vacation to Asheville, North Carolina, we placed an order to have a fresh fruit plate and hummus plate waiting on us upon arrival.
When we arrived, neither was anywhere to be seen. Our bellhop promised to take care of this oversight. After an hour, there was still no food. We called the front desk and they forwarded us to room service. The phone rang and rang with no answer. Finally after another 45 minutes someone finally answered and our order was brought to the room thirty minutes later. No apologies and no discount.

We later called the front desk to get a cab. The desk clerk told us a cab would be there in fifteen minutes and we could meet them downstairs outside of the lobby. My traveling partner went down to have a smoke and I followed in fifteen minutes.

After another ten minutes and no cab, I went in to ask what was going on. The front desk clerk told me, "Oh I meant to call you and tell you that it would be an hour and a half at least before any cab could come." I told her I had been in the room and no one called to let us know. She replied, "I was going to call you." And that was good enough service I guess as she stood there with a blank stare on her face Once again, no apology.

Our service nightmare was not over. The next morning we decided to order room service. Once again I called and called and no one answered. I called the front desk and they tried to reach room service to no avail as well. The front desk clerk then told me," Well, I just don't know what to do. Maybe you should just eat down here."

I asked to speak to the manager and it turned out that the person that delivers room service also answers the phone and takes the orders. There was a full-service restaurant downstairs. Would it be too hard to have someone take the orders while someone delivered meals? If you can't do that, why not have an answering machine? Where is the common sense here?

As we checked out, I told the front desk clerk about the horrible service and problems we experienced (lack of pre-ordered food in room, no extra pillows as requested, dust covering the room even after maid service, constant drilling and hammering in the room next door, no reachable room service and one bell hop for an oversold hotel) and once again along with a dumbfounded blank stare I was told, "We are really busy this weekend." No apologies offered.

This whole fiasco was really a shame as the Renaissance in downtown Asheville, North Carolina is a nice building and a perfect location. The potential is there to provide golf vacationers or anyone else on vacation in Asheville, NC a wonderful hotel experience. But at this time, we at http://www.PerfectGolfVacations.com can not recommend this Asheville hotel to anyone and would never spend our money there again.

Copyright 2007 Evans Putman and http://www.PerfectGolfVacations.com - All Rights Reserved.
Hurricane season in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina runs from June through November each year. The peak months for hurricane activity are August and September. If you are planning a Myrtle Beach golf vacation during these times of the year, you should prepare yourself before arriving at your golf destination. This article provides tips and advice on how to weather any storm the tropics might throw at you while enjoying your golf vacation.

NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, predicts that 2005 will be another above-average Atlantic hurricane season. The organization predicts 12 to15 tropical storms, 7 to 9 hurricanes and 3 to 5 major hurricanes. Vacationing golfers should not take these predictions lightly. We have already seen one of the busiest Julys in the history of hurricane tracking.

Golfers should not let these predictions deter them from taking a golf trip to the Myrtle Beach area during the summer and fall seasons. Summer golf deals along the Grand Strand are hotter than our southern summers. Also, fall in Myrtle Beach provides golfers with dropping accommodation rates to accompany falling temperatures and humidity.

If you are unlucky enough to be right in the middle of a golf vacation when a hurricane takes aim at the coast of the Carolinas, don't worry. Unlike an unexpected afternoon thunderstorm, hurricanes do not sneak up on the South Carolina coast. This gives vacationing golfers plenty of time to leave before the situation gets dangerous.

The best piece of advice we can offer if you plan on visiting the Grand Strand golf area during hurricane season is to keep an eye on the extended Myrtle Beach weather forecast. If a hurricane approaches during your trip, don't panic. As soon as it looks like you may need to abandon your golf vacation, begin following these steps.

Watch the local weather station and follow their advice.

Check on earlier flights and arrive earlier at the airport.

Fill your car with a full tank of gas at first sign of hurricane.

Map out evacuation routes before your leave.

Pack water and food in case of traffic jams when driving.

Don’t wait until the last minute to evacuate.

Most golf packages provide refunds or rain checks in the event of cancellations and evacuations due to hurricanes. Make sure to ask about this before booking your Myrtle Beach golf vacation. Even if you are not planning a Myrtle Beach golf trip during hurricane season, go ahead and ask your golf package provider about refunds and cancellations caused by bad weather.
Whatever you do, don't take the threat of hurricanes lightly. Pay attention to local weather forecasts. Listen to local officials. Follow the steps above and giver yourself plenty of time to evacuate your golf vacation destination safely.

Copyright 2005 Evans Putman and http://www.PerfectGolfVacations.com - All Rights Reserved.
