<description><![CDATA[ Cigarette smoking has been associated with a high prevalence of sleep-related complaints. However, its effects on sleep architecture have not been fully examined. The primary objective of this investigation was to assess the impact of cigarette smoking on sleep architecture. <br /><br />Sleep disturbances are a common side effect of nicotine withdrawal. Some people will sleep much more than usual through this phase of cessation, while others have difficulty getting any sleep at all. If you find yourself suffering from insomnia during the first few weeks after you quit smoking, try a few of these natural remedies to ease your discomforts. <br /><br />Remember, the physical withdrawal phase of quitting tobacco is a temporary condition. Your sleep patterns will return to normal soon, providing you didn’t have insomnia before cessation. If symptoms persist beyond the first month or so, schedule a visit with your doctor. Among many causes, smoking is one main cause for sleeping disturbances.<br /><br />Smokers spend more time in a light sleep. A reason for this is nicotine and its impact on the brain.<br /><br />Smoking cigarettes impairs sleep quality, possibly because of nicotine withdrawal, according to a study in the February issue of Chest, the journal of the American College of Chest Physicians. The study is among the first to isolate the effects of smoking on sleep. In previous research, it was unclear whether changes in sleep patterns were from smoking itself or from the medical conditions underlying smoking such as heart or respiratory disease. A strong correlation was found between smoking and various complaints of ill health as well as between smoking and sleep duration and quality of sleep. The results suggest that there is a strong relationship between the constituents of tobacco smoke and poor sleeping habits. <br /><br />Cigarettes contain nicotine that affects sleep. It is a stimulant that keeps you awake. But smokers are not aware of this fact. Rather they claim that a puff of cigarette smoke makes them feel calmer and helps them relax. On the contrary, nicotine stimulates the mind and the body. It interferes with the body’s ability to fall and stay asleep. Nicotine is a stimulant drug that once it wore off threw the smoker into a physiologically depressed state. To overcome this depressant effect the smoker would smoke again to stimulate him or herself. Soon it would wear off and the endless cycle would be repeated over and over. Blood sugar and hormone levels would skyrocket, only to come crashing down later. By the end of the day the smoker could be physically exhausted from this chronic stimulant/depressant roller coaster. They had to adjust their sleep around these effects.<br /><br />The availability of objective data on sleep architecture, with self-reported information on smoking status, provides an opportunity to characterize sleep architecture among current, former, and never smokers in a large community-based sample. <description><![CDATA[ Considering that everyone uses a cell phone nowadays, when you hear a ringing, its usually safe to assume it someone's phone. But be careful. According to research undertaken by the Electromagnetic Academy based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, cell phones disrupt sleep patterns, especially the light phases of sleep. <br /><br />Mobile phone radiation adversely affects the phases of sleep important for repairing the body and mind after the daily routine. Also, headaches were more prevalent in people exposed to cell phones during their sleep. Symptoms reported are anxiety, tension and tiredness. The researchers found no difference between people who claimed to be sensitive to cell phone radiation and those who did not.<br /><br />This is a part of an ongoing controversy regarding cell phones and health. The FDA and FCC are concerned with these issues and to that end have posted a Web site to try and answer consumer questions. Cell phones have been blamed for a variety of illnesses including cancer and brain deterioration.<br /><br />A new study by researchers in the US and Sweden suggests that using a mobile phone could interfere with your quality of sleep. The study is published in a peer-reviewed online journal that publishes new articles on all aspects of electromagnetic theory and applications. <br /><br />Tips to improve Sleep problems and deprivation <br /><br />Be aware of nutritional content. Know your vitamins and minerals, how much of each you need and what foods are rich in these nutrients. <br />Avoid fatty foods, especially those high in cholesterol. Have your doctor check your cholesterol level and try to keep it under control. And remember, fatty foods produce fatty people. <br />Turn off the TV at night. Some teens fall asleep with the TV on, and some are so used to the noise they think they can't sleep without it. Not true! The TV noises and flashing lights will only keep you from getting a sound sleep. If you can remember things you heard during your sleep, you're not sleeping well. <br />Try caffeine free drinks. Try reducing caffeine by switching to something healthier, like bottled water. Okay, okay, if that's too much to ask, at least try a caffeine-free version of your favorite drink. <br />Turn off the cell phone. What's so important it can’t wait until morning? Unless you have a really good reason--like your parent works at night and might need to reach you, turn it off and get some rest. <br />Sleep in the same bed nightly. <br />If important ideas and thoughts are filling your mind and keeping you awake, have a notepad beside the bed. Writing them down will allow you to let go of them until you can properly deal with them during the day. <br />Try a midday catnap; You'll gain much needed sleep and feel rested. <br />Try some fresh air and sunshine during the day. <br />Sugary treats do taste delicious, but they are filled with empty calories, and not only supply little nutrition, but they also cause weight gain. <br />Eat three balanced meals a day. Don't skip breakfast or you'll spend the rest of the day feeling hungry. <br />Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Their impulsivity may make it hard for a child to wait for things they want or to take their turn in games. They may grab a toy from another child or hit when they are upset. <br /><br />The tendency to jump into a situation without thinking or making a plan of attack characterizes the impulsive child. This behavior is evident in approaching academic work and everyday life. Helping the child control impulsivity may require consistent and concerted effort from everyone concerned. Modeling rather than talking through control techniques should be used.<br /><br />When other people do not understand the reasons for this behaviour it often leads to rejection and criticism from others. Impulsivity can therefore lead to social isolation as the person alienates existing friendships and cannot make new ones.<br /><br />Impulsivity often arises in situations where the person is confused or fearful. These can be minimised by a predictable daily schedule. Also any outbursts should not be automatically written off as impulsivity and ignored. It may be indicating a cause of fear or confusion that needs to be dealt with. When lack of awareness is not an issue the person may apologise later. Try to be sensitive to this despite any lingering anger or annoyance on your part. Prolonged complaints about the behaviour afterward are not likely to help as usually their lack of control was not by choice on their part.<br /><br />Try to remember it is the impulsivity that is at fault, not your loved one. Generally they will not be speaking or acting intentionally to annoy you or hurt your feelings. Separating the person from the behaviour can go a long way to coping with the situation. <br /><br />Dealing with impulsivity <br /><br />It is possible that a behavior is a response to something that needs your attention. Don't be too quick to discount it as an outburst. <br />Stay calm. This will help you remain able to think and not react emotionally and impulsively yourself. In addition, staying calm may help the person calm down. <br />Let the person know that yelling is not the best way to get your attention and offer alternative methods for getting your attention. <br />Remember, although the things being said are hurtful or embarrassing, generally the person is not doing this intentionally. <br />Medications may be helpful for outbursts and physically inappropriate behavior. Talk to your physician. <br />Before starting a new project do your thinking on paper. You will make quicker and better decisions if you write down the pros and cons of a line of action. This doesn't take time, it saves time. <br />To avoid impulsive purchases at the grocery store, plan your meals out before you make up your shopping list. <description><![CDATA[ Hypersensitivity refers to undesirable (damaging, discomfort-producing and sometimes fatal) reactions produced by the normal immune system. Hypersensitivity is a state of altered reactivity in which the body reacts with an exaggerated immune response to a foreign agent; allergy is a synonym for hypersensitivity. anaphylaxis is a form of hypersensitivity. Hypersensitivity reactions require a pre-sensitized (immune) state of the host. However, it’s not only the bite as many horses are hypersensitive to the saliva of the insect and this increases the inflammation.  <br /><br />There are several types hypersensitivity and they are antibody-dependent, immune complex, cell-mediated, the immediate in which this have guinea pig is injected intravenously with an antigen. For this example, bovine serum albumin (BSA, a protein) will be used. <description><![CDATA[ Restless Legs Syndrome is a neurologic movement disorder characterized by unusual, uncomfortable sensations (paresthesias/dysesthesias) deep within the calves and/or thighs, resulting in an irresistible urge to move the legs, and motor restlessness in response to or in an effort to alleviate discomfort. common neurological disorder that causes pulling, tearing, and jerking sensations in the legs when a person is at rest. It is a feeling of uneasiness and restlessness in the legs after going to bed (sometimes causing insomnia); may be relieved temporarily by walking or moving the legs. Restless legs syndrome (RLS, or Wittmaack-Ekbom's syndrome) is poorly understood, often misdiagnosed, and believed to be a neurological disorder.<br /><br />The most distinctive or unusual aspect of the condition is that lying down and trying to relax activates the symptoms. As a result, most people with RLS have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Left untreated, the condition causes exhaustion and daytime fatigue. <br /><br />The cause of restless leg syndrome is unknown in most patients. However, restless leg syndrome has been associated with pregnancy, obesity, smoking, iron deficiency and anemia, nerve disease, polyneuropathy (which can be associated with hypothyroidism, heavy metal toxicity, toxins, and many other conditions), other hormone disease, such as diabetes, and kidney failure (which can be associated with vitamin and mineral deficiency). <br /><br />As described above, people with RLS feel uncomfortable sensations in their legs, especially when sitting or lying down, accompanied by an irresistible urge to move about. These sensations usually occur deep inside the leg, between the knee and ankle; more rarely, they occur in the feet, thighs, arms, and hands. Although the sensations can occur on just one side of the body, they most often affect both sides. <br /><br />The first principle of therapy to treat restless legs syndrome (RLS) is to avoid substances or foods that may be causing or worsening the problem. Avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine may partly relieve your symptoms. Your health care provider should review your medications and determine whether any drug you are taking could be causing the problem.<br /><br />You may benefit from physical therapy, such as stretching, hot or cold baths, whirlpool baths, hot or cold packs, limb massage, or vibratory or electrical stimulation of the feet and toes before bedtime. <br /><br />Supplementation to correct vitamin deficiencies, electrolytes, or iron may improve symptoms in some patients. In iron deficiency, for example, ferrous sulfate 325 mg may be given with 250 mg of vitamin C. Absorption is increased by taking this on an empty stomach and waiting 60 minutes before eating.<br /><br />For mild symptoms, use an over-the-counter pain reliever to reduce twitching and restless sensations. Cut back on alcohol, caffeine and tobacco. Try taking a hot bath and massaging your legs before bedtime to help you relax. Relaxation techniques, such as meditation and yoga, can help you relax before bed. <description><![CDATA[ Alcoholism is a disease in which a person craves alcohol, is unable to limit his or her drinking, needs to drink greater amounts to get the same effect, and has withdrawal symptoms after stopping alcohol use. Alcoholism affects physical and mental health, and causes problems with family, friends and work. It is a pattern of compulsive use of alcohol in which individuals devote substantial periods of time to obtaining and consuming alcoholic beverages despite adverse psychological or physical consequences, eg, depression, blackouts, liver disease, or other consequences.<br /><br />Chronic dependence on the use of alcohol which leads to interference with health and to social and economic problems. Withdrawal of alcohol from a person with alcoholism leads to psychological and physical symptoms. A treatable, progressive condition or illness characterized by excessive consumption of alcohol to the extent that the individual's physical and mental health, personal relationships, social conduct, or job performances are impaired.<br /><br />While the ingestion of alcohol is, by definition, necessary to develop alcoholism, the use of alcohol does not predict the development of alcoholism. The quantity, frequency and regularity of alcohol consumption required to develop alcoholism varies greatly from person to person. <br /><br />Multiple tools are available to those wishing to conduct screening for alcoholism. Identification of alcoholism may be difficult because there is no detectable physiologic difference between a person who drinks frequently and a person with the condition. Identification involves an objective assessment regarding the damage that imbibing alcohol does to the drinker's life compared to the subjective benefits the drinker perceives from consuming alcohol.<br /><br />Most people with alcoholism or those who abuse alcohol enter treatment reluctantly because they deny that they have a problem. Health problems or legal difficulties may prompt treatment. If you aren't dependent on alcohol but are experiencing the adverse effects of drinking, the goal of treatment is to reduce alcohol-related problems — often through counseling or a brief intervention, which usually involves alcohol-abuse specialists who can establish a specific treatment plan. Interventions may include goal setting, behavioral modification techniques, use of self-help manuals, counseling and follow-up care at a treatment center. Another option may be aversion therapy, in which drinking alcohol is paired with a strong aversive response — such as nausea or vomiting induced by a medication. After repeated pairing, the alcohol itself causes the aversive response, which decreases the likelihood of relapse.<br /><br />Depression is a common cause of alcoholism as the depressed person seeks a way out of their problems or a relief from insomnia. Unfortunately, alcohol is itself a depressant, so the problem is only compounded. Anxiety can be temporarily relieved by alcohol, but this may lead to repeated intake and dependence. Several levels of care are available to treat alcoholism. Medically managed hospital-based detoxification and rehabilitation programs are used for more severe cases of dependence that occur with medical and psychiatric complications. Medically monitored detoxification and rehabilitation programs are used for people who are dependent on alcohol and who do not require more closely supervised medical care. The purpose of detoxification is to safely withdraw the alcoholic from alcohol and to help him or her enter a treatment program. <br /><br />The urge to drink again during withdrawal can be very strong. Some people may put themselves into dangerous situations.
