In our article ”What do I feed my dog now?” Katie and I had discussed what to buy for your dog. There have been lots of reports over poisonous ingredients that were/are being used to formulate certain brands of dog food. We didn’t name the brands but we told you our secret brand for a happy strong dog.

If you’ve read the article you’ll also remember Katie left us hanging with this line at the end “And remember, no chocolate, no onions, no raisins, no grapes, and one I just learned about is no avocados.” I wanted to know “why?” So…

In this article we will discuss the foods that we humans eat with relatively no consequences but can be harmful even deadly for your dog. Some of these will surprise you.

Alcohol: Ingestion can lead to sickness, urination problems or even coma or death from alcohol poisoning.

Anti-freeze: Although not a human food, it can be readily available for them in a car park puddle. It is sweet so if they find it, they will drink it. Even a small amount of antifreeze can be fatal. 3-4 tablespoons can kill a medium sized dog. The main ingredient in antifreeze is ethylene glycol, an extremely toxic poison that causes kidney failure, which is often fatal in just a few days.

Apple: The seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can result in cyanide poisoning. Any seed or pit from a fruit is dangerous.

Apricot: Same as the apple.

Avocado: Avocadoes are high in fat content and can trigger an upset stomach, vomiting or even pancreatitis. Avocado contains a toxic element called persin, which can damage heart, lung and other tissue in many animals.

Baby Food: If it contains onion powder then it is not good. See onions for more explanations.

Bones: Cooked bones can be very hazardous for your dog. They become brittle and can splinter causing your dog to choke or worst, puncture, rupture their stomach lining and intestinal tract. Bad bones are turkey and chicken legs, ham, pork chop and veal.

Bread Dough: Pets who have eaten bread dough may experience abdominal pain, bloat, vomiting, disorientation and depression. When bread dough is ingested your dog's body heat causes the dough to rise in the stomach. During the rising process alcohol is produced as the dough expands.

Candy: Sugarless candy containing xylitol has been recognized by the National Animal Poison Control Center (NAPCC) to be a risk to pets. The compound can cause liver damage.

Cherries: The seed pit contains cyanogenic glycosides which can cause cyanide poisoning.

Chocolate: Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise.

Eggs (Raw): Raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which can deplete your dog of biotin, one of the B vitamins. Biotin is essential to your dog’s growth and coat health. Additionally, raw eggs are often contaminated with bacteria, such as salmonella, and you could end up giving your dog food poisoning in addition to biotin deficiency.

Grapes or Raisins: Although the minimum lethal dosage is not known, grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs when ingested in large quantities. The symptoms are gastrointestinal signs including vomiting and diarrhea, and then signs of kidney failure with an onset of severe kidney signs starting about 24 hours after ingestion.

Liver: In small amounts liver is good for your dog, but if the liver intake is too high it can cause nutritional problems because liver has a high content of vitamin A. Consumption of this vitamin in large amounts can lead to vitamin A toxicity, or hypervitaminosis A. It could lead to bone problems.

Macadamia Nuts: The toxic compound is unknown but eating as few as six nuts without the shell has been known to cause elevated body temperature, accelerated heartbeat, tremors in the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters.

Onions: Onions cause hemolytic anemia. Red blood cells break down leaving the dog short of oxygen. Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion.

Salmon (Raw): The cause is infection by a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca. A sudden onset of symptoms occurs 5-7 days after ingestion of fish. Initial symptoms include lethargy and anorexia. Persistent vomiting by the fourth day. There is bloody diarrhea within a few days of vomiting onset. The diarrhea is often bright yellow color. There are enlarged lymph nodes.

Tomatoes and Tomato Plants: These contain atropine which can cause dilated pupils, tremors and irregular heartbeat. The highest concentration of atropine is found in the leaves and stems of tomato plants, next is the unripe (green) tomatoes and then the ripe tomato.

There are more.
Totally confused about what to feed your pets? Don't know whom to trust anymore? You want to give the best possible food, but how do you know what is good for them? What are good ingredients? What are bad ingredients? Is it all just chemical gibberish on the back of the bag? You're not alone. Here are few helpful hints about what you want and don't want to see listed on that pet food bag. (Obviously at this point in time I would suggest staying away from wheat gluten, rice protein, and corn gluten.)

They say, oh your dog can eat anything. It's a dog after all. Well, actually a dog's intestinal tract is pretty short, so it doesn't have a great amount of time to absorb nutrients. So we want to have food that is easily digestible with nutrients that are highly bioavailable for our dogs.

Oven baked ingredients vs. extrusion

You want to look for food that is oven baked. Baking changes the hard-to-digest molecules of "raw" starches into easy to digest dextrines. This process acts as a "pre-digest" of the kibble food, resulting in less strain on the dog's digestive system and produces a greater degree of food absorption. A dog's intestinal tract functions in the most efficient manner when the food is concentrated and can be quickly digested.

Lower quality pet food uses a cooking process called extrusion. This process involves rapidly steaming the food, then extruding it under extreme pressure through a metal die. This process expands the food with air (air?! yes, air) and does not produce the highly digestible food that your dog's system requires. This extruded food, because it is cooked in a very short time is usually almost "raw" and requires the addition of chemical preservatives (ethoxyquin, BHA, and BHT, see below) to maintain a reasonable product shelf life. These altered proteins may contribute to food intolerances, food allergies, and inflammatory bowel disease.

First couple of ingredients on the list

You want some kind of meat whether it is chicken or lamb. You do not want the first ingredient to be corn or some grain or a by-product. (We all know what happens when we eat corn. It tends to not be digested too well, because we end up seeing it again, don't we?)

End of Part 1

--
Patrick & Katie Moran

Pet Food & Supplements

www.monstergiftstore.com

Patrick and Katie have been around dogs all their lives. Patrick is an ex-musher from Canada who has had to turn dogs into four-legged athletes. Katie has always lived surrounded by 4 or more dogs at a time.
Human grade meat v. non-human grade meat

Pet grade meat is meat not fit for human consumption. Well what does that mean? What is in there that might make me sick? I don't know, but I sure don't want my girl eating it. It could include the diseased-ridden (e.g. salmonella-infected) rejects or the dreaded 4D animals (dead, dying, diseased, disabled). They were only recently banned for human consumption and are still legitimate ingredients for pet food. How scary is that?

Meat and meal vs. by-product and by-product meal

By-products are just that -- the excess that is left when the entire usable product is taken. They are ground, rendered parts of the carcass of slaughtered animals, such as necks, beaks, feet, udders, heads, hooves and intestines. Yes, that is all technically protein, but very low quality and is all unfit for human consumption.

Ethoxyquin, BHT, and BHA vs. natural tocopherols.

The USDA lists ethoxyquin as a pesticide. Need I say more? BHT and BHA are carcinogenic. Need I say more? But I shall anyway! These chemical products may also be associated with dry skin, allergic reactions, dental disease, poor health and degenerative organ dysfunction. What you do want is to see the food preserved with natural tocopherols.

But it's so much more expensive!

I use the analogy of a consuming a small power bar versus a whole fast food meal. High quality pet foods are so densely packed with good bioavailable nutrients that you feed your pet a fraction of what it would eat of lesser quality food. And a bonus to this to those who clean up after our babies. Less going in means less coming out. Their little bodies just suck in all the good stuff, that there is not much excess that is left over. And it smells less too!

What about this Raw diet?

Honestly, I've never tried it nor do I know anyone personally that has, but I must say the thought of feeding my girl any raw meat makes me a little queasily nervous. Weren't we always taught that raw meat was a breeding ground for bad bacteria (salmonella, e. coli, etc)? So it may be okay for others, but not for me.

End of Part 2

--
Patrick & Katie Moran

Pet Food & Supplements

www.monstergiftstore.com

Patrick and Katie have been around dogs all their lives.
Okay, great. But which brand of high quality pet food do I buy? There are quite a few out there.

I feed my fifty-five pound female lab mix Wellness (Senior Dry Formula). Just look at the ingredient list. It looks like a grocery list: human grade whole chicken, apples, blueberries, tomatoes, spinach, etc. There is nothing you cannot recognize; nothing chemical, all natural and healthy, and everything is geared to be ultra highly digestible so your pet gets every bit of nutrient assimilated into his body.

The list includes a veritable rainbow of powerful antioxidants. They add chelated vitamins and minerals. Wellness takes the extra step to chelate them because that process makes them highly absorbable. They've got a beneficial ratio omega 3 and 6 fatty acids (flaxseed).

Wellness is also one of the only dog foods to include probiotic bacteria (healthy gut bacteria), which aids in digestion and helps to inhibit the growth and activity of disease-producing organisms.

Oh, here is a nice thing for us humans - they add yucca schidigera. A plant extract that while providing a healthy environment for good gut bacteria in your pet, it binds to ammonia thus reducing fecal odor and gas, which makes it a lot more pleasant cleaning the yard. My husband loves that!

The senior formula I feed my girl is a thoughtful blend of ingredients that support the special needs of older dogs. They reduce the fat and phosphorus so aging hearts and kidneys don't have to work as hard. They also put in natural glucosamine HCL and chondroitin sulfate from New Zealand Green Mussel and Sea Cucumber which helps maintain cartilage in aging joints.

They also have quite an array of other formulas including a Whitefish and Sweet Potato for very allergic dogs.

Wellness is oven-baked and human grade, and it never contains corn, wheat, wheat gluten, dairy, egg, ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT, by-products or anything artificial.

I wish I ate this healthy! My girl is eleven, and everyone thinks she is two or three!

Where can I buy the stuff?

You can run around checking the local pet stores to see if they sell it or… You can click on the link below and you will discover as we did an amazing company that not only sells Wellness pet food but can customize and pack pre-measured single serving dog or cat meals with your pets name on it AND pack the exact single dose of whatever medications or supplements your pet needs! This simplifies feeding time for your kids, the sitter, and you! And it makes traveling with your companion a breeze! Check them out! And get this¦ they only charge a flat rate $6.95 for shipping no matter what you buy (yes, even dog food!) and no matter how much you buy, whether it's one bag of dog food or twenty bags of dog food. Unbelievable. My girl and I swear by them!

May all your four-legged children be healthy.
And remember, no chocolate, no onions, no raisins, no grapes, and one I just learned about is no avocados.

End of Article.

--
Patrick & Katie Moran

Pet Food & Supplements

www.monstergiftstore.com

Patrick and Katie have been around dogs all their lives.
Make-up Tips for Pale Skin

Pale skin can be very translucent so finding the right foundation is one of your most important tasks. You may find that being so fair that you are a little more prone to ageing especially if you live in a sunny climate. I would recommend that if your foundation doesn't contain a good amount of SPF that you always apply sunscreen on a daily basis as part of your beauty routine and, before your foundation to aid you in slowing the ageing process.

A yellow or beige tint to your base should be enough to minimize the slight redness from your skin if you are prone to acne or if you’ve been exposed to the elements for too long. It will give you a little warmth to your skin tone. Make sure the color match is perfect, because if your base is too dark, you will look like you are wearing a mask. Use your foundation to even out your skin tone preparing it for the artwork to come next.

Go easy using bright colors on your eyes, as on pale skin they tend to be a bit too much. Try soft pastels, sheer shimmers and natural hues with warm undertones. A little mascara is good too. If your iris is pale then you may need to wear a taupe liner to frame your eyes. Groom your eyebrows and line with a blonde brow powder or smudged pencil. ??Cheek color is where you can bring a little more than the usual natural glow into your coloring. You need richer tones like sheer plum cheek tints and go for a deeper shade of lipstick. This will contrast nicely with brown or red hair. Experiment with brown-reds or berry shades and for a more dramatic evening look a go for true reds.

Coral shades are emerging. I love using a gingery sheer eye gloss, lashings of dark brown mascara, lots of warm cheek tint on the apples of my cheeks. I add a hint of shimmer across the top to bring the eyes out. I might use nude glossy lips for something a little funkier and it looks divine on translucent fair skin. I’m a redhead myself but you may have to alternate tones depending on your coloring and hair color.

Have fun discovering your new colors.

--
Katie Moran
Katie’s Wellness & Beauty Corner
www.monstergiftstore.com

Katie is an ex-model and has appeared in several infomercials.
How to Enhance Smaller Eyes Using Make-Up

You don’t have to be any magician to create flawless illusions. As a former model I picked up all sorts of little tricks from the various make-up artists I worked with. They would say their most often used trick in their magic bags is to “use the powers of light and dark to illuminate the good and hide the bad”. Such drama queens they are. But they are true goddesses of illusion.

What you will require for this little exercise is:

Dark brown or black pencil or liquid eyeliner
White pencil or liquid eyeliner
Lash curler
Mascara (brown-black, black or charcoal)
Light frost eye shadow
Medium color matte eye shadow

Always apply eye shadow first before liner or mascara. Brush a light frost eye shadow on the brow just under the eyebrow. I like to use yellow. (Only use gold or white if you are going out at night because it comes off as a little harsh.) The yellow really opens up the eyes and it makes me glow. For a little added glamour, or as I call it my sly sexy look, I dab a bit on the inner corners of my eyes (and maybe a dab on the highest point in my cheekbone!). Take the medium color matte eye shadow and sweep it on the outer half of the eyelid for contour. If you wish to use dark eye shadow, use it only in the outside corner area and sparingly. Remember, dark hides and shrinks.

Next the liner. Start with a fine line from the inner corner of your eye as close as you can get to your eyelash. As you past the midway point of your eyelid, make the line thicker. Extend your liner beyond the corner of your eye a little to open your eye. This will make your lashes look thicker and longer. For even more of an open-eye look, line the inside rim of your lower eye with white liner. Never completely surround your eyes in a dark liner if you have small eyes; this is counterproductive. One makeup artist did this to me once. And I do mean only once.

And finally for lush luxurious lashes, curl them. Then the mascara. Apply one coat on your eyelashes. Wait a few minutes to see the effect. Then apply second or a third coat to darken your eyelashes more. This will make your eyes look larger as well.

Use lighter shades of eye shadow or a slight shimmer on your lid to really open your eyes, and also use an iridescent highlighter under your brow.

We use the dark to diminish and light to enhance. These are a few tricks that can create the illusion of having bigger eyes.

Have fun discovering your new colors.

--
Katie Moran

Katie’s Wellness & Beauty Corner

www.monstergiftstore.com

Katie is an ex-model and has appeared in several infomercials.
Here are quick and easy make-up tips. Anybody can use these as they are not targeting anyone with special features.

- If you do not have time for a full make-up, but want to look great. Paint on a bright red lipstick. At least its happy and glamorous color will immediately brightens your face.

- Sweep a little loose powder under your eyes when applying dark shades of eye shadow to catch any falling specks and prevent them from staining your skin.

- Make your lips look larger by wearing a bright, light lipstick. Or make them appear small by wearing dark and more muted colors.

- If you do not have a specialized contouring product for cheeks, simply use an ordinary face powder a couple of shades darker than your usual one to slim down the cheeks.

- Add a drop of witch hazel available in all good drug stores to turn ordinary foundation into a medicated one, it will work wonders on oily skin, which is prone to acne and pimples.

- Mascara your lashes before applying false ones to help them stick properly.

- If you look tired then blend a little concealer just away from the outer corner of your eye - it will make you look as though you had a good night's sleep.

- Never apply makeup before blow-drying your hair - the heat from the dryer can make you perspire and cause your makeup to smudge.

- The color of powder eye shadow can be made to look more intense by dipping your eye shadow brush in water first.

- Keep eye lashes smooth and supple by brushing them with petroleum jelly before going to bed at night.

- Apply cream blusher in light downward movements to prevent it from creasing in specks of color from catching in the fine hairs on your face.

- If mascara tends to clog on your lower lashes then try using a small thin brush to paint color on to individual lashes.

- Make sure you give moisturizer time to sink in before you start applying your makeup as it will help your makeup go on more easily.

- If your eyeliner is too hard and drags your skin, hold it next to a lighter bulb for a few seconds before applying.

- Lip gloss can look sophisticated if you just apply a dot in the center of your lower lip.

- If you are unsure where to apply blusher, gently pinch your cheeks. If you like the effect, apply blusher in the same area.

- To prevent lipstick from getting on your teeth, try this tip. After putting it on, put your finger in the mouth, purse your lips and pull it out.

- Women who wear glasses need to take special advice on makeup. If you are near-sighted, your glasses will make your eyes look smaller. So, go for brighter eye shadows and lots of mascara to ensure they do not disappear.

- A little foundation lightly rubbed through your eyebrows and brushed through with an old toothbrush will instantly lighten them.

- For long lasting blush on sunny days or hot nights, apply both cream and powder blusher. Apply the cream formulation first, set with translucent powder then dust with a little powder blush.

Have fun discovering your new colors.

--
Katie Moran

Katie’s Wellness & Beauty Corner

www.monstergiftstore.com

Katie is an ex-model and has appeared in several infomercials.
Make-up Tips for Brown Eyes

Brown eyes come in many different shades so let’s look at a kaleidoscope of colors to help us to enhance eye color. Colors opposite each other will be complementary so, will work to brighten each other up. For example: Red and green, orange and blue, purple and yellow. Depending on the shade of brown your eyes are will determine the shades of eye shadow you may use to brighten the brown which, may give you the effect of lightening that you are after, especially if you use colors that shimmer. If your eyes have a yellow tinge, try using an eye shadow with a purple tone. ?
The next thing you need to consider is the one rule of makeup that will always guide you: Light colors bring out, make larger and highlight. Dark colors recede, minimize or contour. So with this in mind you could work with dark eyeliner and light eye shadow colors to emphasize your dark chocolate eyes with black liner, mascara, a smudge of pale pink eye shadow, and finish with lightly flushed cheeks and make your lips your signature. Create lip focus with a red or berry stain. To pull color focus from your eyes, giving the illusion of lighter eyes, go for a deeper shade of lip color.

Dark brown eyes are very versatile when it comes to color accents, and dark brown eyes are such a beautiful feature to have, I would play them up. Compliment your brown eyes with pale pinks, or accent the brown with gold and deep rusts. Have you tried using eyeliner to add definition? One look is to use one sheer glittery eye shadow used all over in combination with a softly smudged liner for a more sophisticated look.

I would definitely recommend you have a play with colored eyeliners. Dark brown eyes look stunning lined in shades of plum mix with a pale mauve shadow, aubergine mix with a shimmery light pink shadow, raisin mix with a mushroom soft brown shadow. Just remember to combine with a lighter shadow or your eyes may look more dramatic.

There are various methods of using eyeliner. Pencils are the most versatile eye-defining tools, as you can start softly, blending each layer back if it starts to become too heavy looking. Pencil can be smudged softly, or add depth under an eye shadow for a muted look, or used alone for strongly defined eyes.
Liquid eyeliner is much more dramatic, and can be applied over top of your eye pencil for added intensity, or used under eye shadow to enhance your eye shape. Both of these techniques ensure longwearing eyeliner.

For the most natural way to line your eyes, use a small, firm brush and apply eye shadow as your eyeliner. Make the most of your dark brown eyes, using soft pinks to really bring them out. Use brown mascara for day, and a black/brown mascara for evening or special occasions. Keep eyeliner to a minimum though. Just use it to softly frame your eyes. Avoid all black as it tends to be too strong. Chocolates, deep plums and charcoals smudged into your lashes will do the trick. You might like to try adding a very subtle contour in a soft mushroom color on your brow bone just above your crease and blend this softly.

On the days you feel like your eyes need a pick-me-up, jazz up your eye make-up a little. Graduating your eye makeup from at your lash line to your brow will give your eyes more depth. Use the darkest shade along your lash line, and merge into lighter shades nearer your brow. Contouring and shading can create the illusion of different eye shapes. By using dark to minimize and light to make larger, you can play with altering the length and size of your eyes. ?

If you just want to keep it simple, sweep a shimmery pastel shadow all over your lid, curl your lashes, apply 2 to 3 coats dark grey charcoal or dark brown mascara, and add a few individual false lashes on the outer corner of your eyes!

Have fun discovering your new colors.

--
Katie Moran

Katie’s Wellness & Beauty Corner

www.monstergiftstore.com

Katie is an ex-model and has appeared in several infomercials.
