Pine nut can be basically considered as an appetite suppressant and a natural way of preventing overeating habit. Pine nuts are being consumed as part of people’s diet since ancient Greek and the Roman era. In Portugal, the larger section of the forest area is dominated by wild pine trees. The main reason is due to the favorable weather conditions that are available in that region. In the past, people use to carry a handful of nuts to consume them on long hunting trips and at the same time to maintain their energy too. Pine nuts have a nutty flavor and contain certain fatty acids that allow suppressing hunger. Pine nuts contain more protein than any other nut or seed that are available. It contains exceptionally high protein to about 31%.

Portugal is situated in the south western region of the Europe continent. It is interesting to learn that about 38% of the total land consists of forest region and 31% of the total forest is dominated by wild pine trees. Another species known as stone pines is also cultivated in Portugal. The stony pine which is also called as umbrella pines is cultivated on a large scale in Portugal. The main reason for growing stony pines in an extensive manner are because of it’s the favorable weather conditions that are provided by the Mediterranean climate of the region of Portugal. The stone pine is adaptable to high temperatures and it helps in maintaining the ecological balance of the forest area. It prevents pollution and facilitates forest conservation too. The most important product that is derived from the stone pine trees are the pine nuts which is an important ingredient towards Portuguese cuisine. The pine nut kernels are known to be environment friendly. Pine nut trees are not prone towards any form of damage caused by pests or diseases and thus have the capacity to preserve the forest environment.

Pine nuts contain lots of proteins and it can curb your hunger pangs by giving you a sense of fullness. The pine nuts have the ability to hold back hunger due to the fatty acids that is present within the pine nut. The pine nut contains pine nut oil, containing polyunsaturated fat of Pinolenic acid. This type of oil content stimulates the hunger suppressing hormones called as CCK. The peptide hormone of cholecystokinin is produced during the ingestion of food that is released into the blood stream. It is this hormone that makes a person feel that its stomach is full now. Pine nuts contain vitamins E, B3, B1 and B2. It also contains essential amino acids, beta carotene, magnesium, copper, Zinc, iron and iodine. All are essential properties for healthy living. Pine nuts also help in improving ones digestion system and improves cardiovascular health situation. Your salad can also consist of few pine nuts or you could also use pine nuts in soups in order to make it crunchy and crispy. Pine nut oil is a bit expensive but it is worth the money. It acts as a natural way of controlling appetite without any side effects.

People should be encouraged to use pine nuts in their meals. Pine nuts are good source of antioxidants and by consuming pine nuts; one can lower cholesterol effects of the body. Portugal traditional recipes are rich in pine kernels. Portuguese pine nuts mainly come from a pine tree called stone pine which is not a fast growing species. Also, its timber is not so valuable. However, Portugal’s highest income source of stone pine comes from pine nuts.

--
Source of this article is Portuguese wine and Best of Portugal.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Rent a house in Bangkok

Rent a house in Bangkok

When I first moved to Bangkok, I rented an apartment like most newcomers to Bangkok do, but as I became more familiar with my new home town, I decided to be a little more adventurous and rented a house. Having lived in houses over the past five years now, I’ve found that renting a house in Bangkok not only offers more space and privacy, often it is also much better value compared to apartment living. More often than not, it is also a cheaper option (per square metre) compared to renting an apartment or condo, which are getting smaller in size these days! If you enjoy wide open spaces, appreciate some green in your life - a garden perhaps, have pets, a large family or simply want to maximize your budget, consider renting a house instead.

Another advantage in renting a house is, apartments tend to put a high surcharge on your electricity and water bills. Many apartments have a minimum charge of 1000 bht for water alone. That is a significant amount considering my water bill never cost me over 500 bht living in a house with a family of 5, and we do A LOT of washing! Electricity can be anything between 5 – 7 baht per unit compared to the actual 3.75 baht charged by the MEA. Living in a house can save you up to half your utility bills compared to living in an apartment, and believe me it is A LOT of difference!

Thailand is cheap!

As you may already know, Thailand (more accurately, “Bangkok”) is not the cheap haven many foreigners once thought it to be, especially when it comes to housing. Property prices and rental have gone up considerably and that’s the way it goes everywhere around the world. The very same 2 bedroom unit I rented 5 years ago (in Silom) has gone up by 30% in rental and hardly any refurbishment has been done to it since! “That’s ridiculous” you say and believe it or not, I agree! But hey, I don’t make the prices and if you think agents benefit from that higher commission, that’s only true when clients actually think these houses are worth the price and that isn’t always the case.

Renting a house in Sukhumvit, Silom or Sathorn.

If you are looking to rent a house in the the Sukhumvit, Silom or Sathorn area, then the very minimum rental you are looking at is 30,000 bht for a BASIC 3 bedroom house. Even then, they are few and far between in that range, and more often than not are above 15 years old, with dark parquet flooring and lots of wooden built-ins which many people find dark and depressing.

Most people prefer something a little brighter and contemporary. That would mean newer houses between 1 – 5 years old and these start around 45,000 bht. Depending on the location, size, décor, facilities etc. these can go up to anything from 150,000 – 250,000 baht per month. For that price, please do not accept anything less than a spectacular, resort-like villa with a private pool!

No, but seriously, you do get what you pay for so be realistic when it comes to expectations and budget. If you want something new and modern but lack the budget, then move further away from the city centre. Which also means further away from the BTS line. Unfortunately, we cannot have it all and something’s gotta give.

Generally, if you go further towards the end of the BTS line and beyond i.e. Mo Chit, Phayathai, Phrakanong, On Nut, Bangna, Srinakarin, Rangsit etc. prices drop significantly and you get much better deals which are sometimes worth the extra time commuting.

Is it possible to find a house for 15,000 bht?

Not many agencies deal with houses below 25,000 bht. Just search the various property website in Thailand and you will see that the minimum range for houses are 25,000 - 30,000 bht, where the search usually returns 0 - 5 results. Several reasons for that:

1) There are a lot less decent and rentable houses at < 25,000 bht than there are at say, 50,000 bht.

2) If there is, it is usually way out of town, far from any BTS/MRT station.

3) Most people want to live in town, close to the city centre, CBD or near a BTS/MRT station.

4) Apart from location, houses below 25,000 bht are usually older (thus old fashioned) and not very well-maintained, which makes it very hard to rent.

5) If a house is nice and decent with an asking rent of 25,000 bht or less, some agents mark it up!

Thus, it’s hard to find nice, decent houses at 25,000 bht or less…

Regardless, there are plenty of cheap houses as low as 12,000 bht for rent, but remember, and I stress again - you get what you pay for! And most 12,000 bht houses I’ve seen are usually in serious need of repair and maintenance, and the really nice ones are located way out in whoop whoop district.

I don’t care as long as rent is cheap. Where do I look?

Again, you won’t find any agents to help you there and finding that perfect yet cheap and nice house is undoubtedly the hardest step. It usually takes months of driving around moo baan after moo baan, which would mean having your own transport and knowing your way around.

The word “Moo Baan” translates to “village” in Thai, but the term “housing estate” would be far more accurate. These usually have a guard posted at the entrance and are situated all over Bangkok. These houses usually offer much better value than stand alone houses, and are a good place for the house hunter to start his/her search. Try areas like On Nut between Sukhumvit 77 – 103, Bangna, Rangsit, Ramintra, Phayathai, Mo chit etc.

Concerns and other issues

1) Security
Honestly, I know of many farangs, including myself who have lived in single houses and existed peacefully without any disturbances or trouble for years. I also do not know anyone who has been burgled personally because they were living in a house. Do you?
If you are considering renting a house and security is a main concern, rent a house in popular areas like Sukhumvit, Silom and Sathorn where there are many nearby apartments and condos with security. That way, you can benefit from the dense security in the neighbourhood.
Another option would be to opt for houses or townhouse within a “moo baan.” There are plenty around and majority of them have tight 24 hour security. Common sense would also tell me to explore the neighbourhood a little and have a chat with shopkeepers and a neighbour who might be willing to share some information with you. I’m sure you’ll have no problems getting a friendly neighbour to spill the beans on the house, its previous tenants and probably things you don’t need to know about your landlord. Welcome to Thailand!

2) Air conditioners
Check to see how many rooms have air-conditioning; and how old the air-conditioners are. If you are looking at an older house, chances are it will have those big, old blocks that rumble every time you turn them on. These old air-conditioners consume a lot more energy than a new one, and would greatly increase your electricity bills. It is also unlikely that the landlord will install new air-conditioners for you unless they are completely dead (even then they will always try to revive the monster before even considering replacing it), so make sure that they are serviced and cleaned before you move in or if you got a good deal on the rent, invest in some new airconditioners!

3) Water Pressure
Now this is important. Always check that there is a water pump. Then check the water pressure on the upper floors to make sure the pump has enough power to deliver a decent jet of shower. I’ve learnt from experience that size does not necessarily mean power when it comes to a water pump, and sometimes a 2nd pump needs to be installed to ensure constant deliverance of water into the house.

4) Telephone lines
Again, from experience it is in your best interest to check the phone lines to make sure that 1) you have one and 2) it is working, because some areas (and this includes many areas in the Sukhumvit, Silom and Sathorn) do not have anymore available numbers and you will have to join a looong waiting list to apply for a new one. Also, older houses above 10 years old tend to be on the old, analog system which when faulty, cannot be replaced unless the whole area is re-cabled. No telephone lines = no internet. You don’t ever want to be caught in that situation!

5) Maintenance
Houses within a secured compound will have what they call “moo baan fee” or “community fee” which goes into the maintenance of the estate i.e. security, pool and garden maintenance etc. This is usually included in the asking rent. However, if you try negotiating on the rent, then more often than not, the landlord will exclude this from the rent and make you pay for it, so check to see what your rent includes when you are signing the contract. This ranges between 20 - 45 bht per square metre. Thus, the larger your house the more you pay! I currently pay 3,500 baht per month for my “moo baan fee” (I got a 5000 bht reduction in rent, so it works out) and we have 24 hour security, a well-maintained common garden and a superb pool that is regularly cleaned, so I am happy.

At Bangkok Finder, we specialize in properties for rent.
What are the largest & most lucrative online multilingual markets aside from English?

With Google reporting that over 50% of their traffic comes from multilingual searches, it has become crucial to consider developing a multilingual online presence. However, the question remains the same: Which markets to target? Which ones are the most important in terms of users, etc.?

First of all, let's see which parts of the world feature the most users. Contrary to general belief, it is not North America! With close to 400 million users, Asia definitely takes the lead, followed by Europe with approximately 315 million users, in comparison to 232 million in North America (North America being defined as the U.S., Canada, and Mexico).

In my extensive experience with multilingual online applications, I have learned over the years to differentiate clearly the amount of users versus the market potentiality of a product or a service. For example, the Hispanic online market (between South and Central America, the U.S., the Caribbean and Spain) features slightly more users than the French-speaking market. But when it comes to buying power, countries like France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada (Quebec) have so much more buying power than Peru, Bolivia or Chile!

More than just buying power, we need to look at the cultural ramifications involved in internet behaviors. In other terms, is a specific market used to ordering & transacting online? For instance, compared to its amount of users, France is extremely active online, while French-speaking countries in Africa are proportionally inactive. The same applies when comparing Spain and some South American countries. If you were to compare the online buying habits between 100,000 users in Spain and the same number of users throughout South America, you would notice that people out of Spain order products and services at least 5 times more than their South American peers.
In many cases, it is not a matter of buying power, but rather mail order habits based on the country's postal delivery system. In fact, in many countries where the postal system is unreliable (not to say flaky!), online users were not "groomed" with mail order habits prior to the internet. As a result, although such markets will look for products and services online, they certainly are not as mail order oriented as other countries featuring more efficient mailing systems.

Therefore, it is impossible to rely solely on the amount of users when considering establishing a multilingual presence online. Another good example to illustrate such fact would be China and Japan. China currently has almost 145 million users and it is one of the fastest growing markets on the internet. Japan, with 86 million users, has nearly reached its maximum potential with almost 70% of its population online. A very small proportion of online users in China own a credit card or even have the right to order what they want, while in Japan it is exactly the reverse.

Once again, no one should confuse the amount of users versus the buying power of a given market.

On the other hand, one needs to consider the worth of Third World markets/economically disadvantaged countries. For instance, countries like Bangladesh, Mozambique, Somalia, etc., might not seem very attractive at first. However, in Third World markets, those online are affluent and wealthy. In those countries, there is no middle class. Basically, you are either dirt poor or filthy rich! Online users in those countries belong to the the second category. Many online gambling portals and entertainment websites of all kinds have found high spenders in economically-disadvantaged-markets. In fact, wealthy individuals in Rwanda or Chad do not have many entertainment outlets in their homeland! Furthermore, most everything is lacking within their country infrastructure: clothing, electronics, etc. Online applications have therefore become a form of "entertainment salvation" for the wealthy minorities of third world markets.

Online multilingual markets are complex, and instead of looking at languages/countries just by their buying power or number of users, one should evaluate what they have to offer and define the marketability of their products and services accordingly.
Are you looking for end users to buy your products? Then look at the buying power of the targeted markets along with the reliability of their postal and transportation services. Are you a manufacturer looking to find more distributors/to increase your exports? Then chances are that the world is your oyster.

I advise you to perform a meticulous evaluation of your market potential when developing a presence on multilingual search engines. So many factors need to be taken into consideration...Do not look at Japanese, French or Spanish just as country specific, but rather online language market shares! Just as an example, aside from all countries where Spanish is spoken, one of the most active Hispanic online markets is in the U.S.!
WWW = World Wide Web. Is your website really reaching worldwide?
The time has come to implement action on a global scale!
For fun, test your global knowledge by taking the following quiz: http://www.mseo.com/quiz/quiz.html

--
SEO Consultant Mathias Levarek is talking about Inetenation / Multilingual Online Market.
To rent an apartment or condo in Bangkok?

By info at 4:48 am on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 Edit This
Many people ask, “what’s the difference between an apartment and a condo in Bangkok?” Well, condos are individually owned units whilst an apartment is a block of rental units owned by a company, family or individual.
There are, of course pros and cons to renting an apartment over condo and hopefully this article will shed some light on the apartment versus condo rental issue, and help you with your final decision.
Rental prices
When it comes to price, I don’t think it differs very much whether it’s an apartment or condo. The rental rate is usually determined by the location, age and grade of building, size of unit, number of bedrooms, facilities, décor and furnishing.
For a guide on what your rental budget will buy, click here.
Utility bills.
Now, this is where the main disadvantage lies in renting an apartment over a condo. Apartments tend to have a minimum charge for water (usually around 1000 baht per month) and a surcharge on electricity (around 5 – 6 baht a unit compared to the 3.5 baht charged by the MEA). All this can amount a hefty difference in utility bills at the end of every month.
I live in a 3 storey townhouse with a family of 6 and my water bill has never exceeded 500 BHT a month, ever. We do a lot of washing and drinking too!
Building management fees
These fees apply more for condominiums since apartments have already accounted for their operating cost in their rates. This is usually around 40 baht per square metre and most of the time; this fee has already been included in the rent. However, if you got you a really good deal i.e. a nicely furnished 95 sqm 2 bedroom in the CBD for 25,000 baht/month, then it’s likely that your landlord will not be paying the building mgt. fee for you. I think that’s reasonable enough.
Others
At the end of the day, whether you are renting an apartment or a condo, who you rent it from is extremely important. With condo owners, I feel that it’s a lot easier to negotiate on the rent since these individuals can be more flexible, compared to an apartment which charges standard rates that are usually non-negotiable. However, finding a suitable condo for rent is a little trickier on your own since you’ll have to know where there is a unit for rent and the owner’s contact. That is where real estate; and property agencies like Bangkok Findercan help you.
The other thing is maintenance. It’s definitely a lot more convenient if you are living in an apartment since there is usually an in house maintenance guy hired by the building at hand. However, I know of many condo owners who take very good care of their property and have their own handyman who usually respond within a day. The cost can be foot by the landlord or the tenant depending on the initial agreement. Again, the cheaper the rent, the more you’ll have to account during your lease tenure.
Apart from that, apartments and condos both offer 24 hour security and feel safer for most, compared to living in a house. There is also NO chance of flooding inside your home, which is a major concern for most people looking to rent or buy in Thailand.
Those are the main points really. Now, are you ready to start your home search? Here are apartments for rent and condos for rent in Bangkok.

--
Maddy Barber is founder of a professional property rental agency specializing in renting apartments and houses and condos for rent in Bangkok.
“How many times must I shake my bells, And kiss thy low brow, dismal caricature? How many shafts, O my quiver be lost, Ere I hit the impalpable, mystical mark? We shall wear out our souls in cunning design and demolish many…” touted the late great Baudelaire over one hundred and fifty years ago. Anger, disdain, and contempt for what was he so enthralled on?

Well, in all due respect, I use the epic poet to perhaps shed a glimmer of light on a pathetic situation which has affected not only my small company but a few of my client’s as well. I want to simply point out a few facts about network services, technical support and what you get when dealing with a certain large enterprise operation and a medium size service provider, which I don’t feel the need to mention, (eh’hem Ti^^# W^RN#R and Arrrrrrr..), that may just be suffering from growing pains.

Shop for Women's Swimwear, Sexy Dresses and Bikinis at MyShopGirl.com.

My company, Netricks, Inc. is small, so small in fact that I know almost all two hundred and fifty clients on a first name basis. Yes 250, most here in the beautiful San Joaquin Valley.

We are so small that my three full time engineers, my two coders, graphic designer and two in house clerical staff members are proficient with either network or web related design. We have a system of checks and balances in place that we can answer most problems and issues quickly without leaving the customer waiting and waiting for answers and resolutions. However, we end up relying on larger corporations for numerous services which we cannot possible provide.

Let’s face it, we can’t do everything. We need the infrastructure that the larger corps and enterprise outfits offer. Now the main point I want to protrude is how intertwined everything actually is between e-mail hosting and Internet service. That is where the common problem occurs.

As well as networking and superior technical services, Netricks offers true hosting solutions for web design, database development, e-commerce and e-mail. We are not an ISP (Internet Service Provider.) For the most part, we rely on the AT&Ts and SBCs to provide that service. Although there are excellent smaller outfits here locally that give much better person to person service, like Integrity Networks run locally by Rod Caglia.

Integrity, like Netricks is small enough that its top employees are all efficient and hands on. Every employee is a top employee. Whoever you speak with there will for the most part be able to offer you expert service and support. Technical issues get handled immediately and without delay because they know their equipment and can easily handle their offerings.

In my experience, the larger companies promote their top engineers and the technical support gets handled by younger, less experienced personnel. I have witnessed several such cases recently where the ISP improperly routed multiple e-mail systems and my clients were unable to send and receive e-mail from certain hosts. In their minds, it all pointed to Netricks as the culprit to the problem, since it is Netricks that handles their e-mail service.

Yet, as most network engineers understand, it is the ISP’s responsibility to rout e-mail properly. If there are issues with the ISP’s domain name services infrastructure, problems will exist with routing e-mail; that is a fact. My expert engineers pointed this problem out to multiple technicians at these un-named organizations. And the ISP techs could not “find” any problems. Hmmmph, imagine that.

Over and over again they blamed us (Netricks) for the miss-routed e-mail. Now I service over 250 companies with my e-mail system and the only clients that were suffering from the routing difficulties were the clients that used that certain ISP Un-named company (out of RESPECT). Coincidence? I think not!

Over and over I met with my clients telling them that we would get to the bottom of the situation. I tried to assure them that the problems were not due to our e-mail system and that we would work with their ISP to resolve the issues at hand. Every time my engineers would call the ISP, a trouble ticket would be opened, of course. We would have to sit on our asses and wait for them to call us back. Usually they would get back to us the next day. Tick tock tick tock…

Multiple times they would tell my techs that they found a problem and fixed it and multiple times the problem would persist. Call after call, day after day the issues remained and we were the ones left waiting in the wings, feeling the pressure, looked at as the damned. Yet our hands were actually tied. Finally we would get the issue escalated to the “next level” tech at the ISP? Over and over again these issues went on. It took weeks to finally resolve. And in the end, our original remarks about the issues with the ISP were absolutely correct.

It took weeks of problematic service and countless calls to the Internet Service Provider in order to finally get the issues escalated. That was the hard part. Once we got the trouble ticket beyond their low-level technical support and into the hands of a qualified engineer *** Poof *** the problems went away. They finally listened.

Why was it so difficult? I tell you, growth can kill. It is not I that wishes death upon the corporate techie, for they are indeed good for my business. Yet, I believe that it should be important to small companies like mine and also large to higher qualified support all the way down the ladder. And I leave you with a mystical thought from the Old Great, yet in a modern flavor:

“If you haven’t hope, one strange experienced hope,
That Death, like a new sun afloat in the sky,
Will cause the flowers of their [Corporate] brains to bloom!”
The Echoes of Baudelaire neigh ricochet as swift as the keys falling on deaf ears. We can only attempt to influence the layman’s ways with truth, however un-poetic it may indeed be. Perhaps they will listen next time, perhaps. Nonetheless, I hope they read and learn.

Have a nice day fair ladies and gentlemen.
All past articles written by Greg Richburg are available at Fresno Web Design and Tech Articles.
Jean Cocteau once said, “we only serve as a model for the portrait of our fame.” Tell that one to Dorian Grey. It parallels the old “Chicken or the Egg” deal. Which came first? Like the preconceived elements of the computer and tech world, microchips, holographic interactive school teachers, global positioning systems, retna scanners, microwave popcorn, wireless remote controls, hover crafts, laser guns, and invisibility rings.

Fantasy or “remember when…”?

Try these selections from My Shop Girl Sexy Bikini! Just Click below for Sexy Swimwear!

George Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1949, a dystopian novel setting forth the fears of an intrusively bureaucratized state of the future. “Big Brother is watching you!” And now I can find my lost dog with a GPS microchip implant. I heard that some top secret organizations use the VeriChip implant in human hands in order to maintain security. Scan in and scan out, how freaky or cool is that?

Truth be told, almost every technological advancement of our modern age has been foreseen in a fantasy or sci-fi novel, painting or movie of some kind. Lucky guesses? Or, does science really copy the fantastic developments of the artistic pioneers, painters, and writers?

Where is this going?

Well, I am not too sure at this point, but I can tell you one thing, technological advancement can sure make life easier. It can be said that we fantasize for pure pleasure and invent for production. We are a society of development and consumption. We push forward every day in order to make life more beautiful, or at least that is the goal.

The idea of an embedded microchip (VeriChip) that contains all our medical records, connections with our financial systems and is trackable could sure make life safe and easy. Yet it seems to potentially open a whole new realm of corruption and ethical argumentation. There are already loads of websites spouting disagreements with the useage of the “VeriChip” implant in humans.

In essence, a VeriChip is a small radio transmitter about the size of a grain of rice that is injected under a person's skin. It transmits a unique ID number whenever it is within a few feet of a special receiver unit. The system was designed to replace ID systems such as company ID cards and medical emergency ID tags. It is speculated that such a chip could also be used to replace driver licenses, passports, and credit cards.

Embrace or Run Away?

Well, as far as crime is concerned, we could practically say good-bye to kidnapping and robbery. But along with that, there goes privacy and the whole innocent until proven guilty ideal. No need to concern yourself with where your spouse really was last night, or where your child is at the moment.

Now what about the Book of Revelations and all that about the “Mark of the Beast”? Since the FDA approoved the use of the implant for medical records last October, there have been websites popping up all over telling tales of disdain in the Christian eye.

Truth be told, there are numerous examples of these chips being used today in everyday life. Millions of animals around the world have been chipped for medical purposes. In Mexico, city officials have been chipped for security reasons and to prevent kidnapping. And recently at the Baja Beach Resort in Barcelona, Spain, patrons can get a microchip with their financial information implanted so they can pay for their cocktails with a swipe of the arm. Is that VIP or what?

What is the bottom line?

Well, I’m not here to espouse one extreme or another. I am neither the zealot with disdain for the system nor the futurist with the tech mind pressing forth. I am a mere network engineer that runs a web design and tech support company and seems to think that future and science-fiction are getting pretty well acquainted.

From Big Brother to the Mark of the Beast, from safe, efficient living to streamilining the medical and financial world, we are on the verge of advancements so great, that Artists are painting reality right before our eyes. We are living in sci-fi and witnessing what our ancestors only dreamed of.

All past articles written by Greg Richburg are available at Tech Articles and News by Netricks.
Four Houston entrepreneurs are launching a search engine today that they hope will challenge the likes of Google and Yahoo.

Frustrated with the results they get from other search engines, Neal Verma, founder and CEO of iRazoo.com, and three friends with technology backgrounds have spent their evenings and weekends — and an undisclosed amount of money — over the last eight months developing iRazoo.

Now they'll have to prove it works by drawing enough users, who in turn will attract advertisers to fund the company in a business where a handful of companies dominate.

They're betting they have a better approach to search — a site designed to highlight the most useful sites by seeking input from users who can earn rewards by voting for, or against, Web sites.

Even though 97 percent of Internet searches are done on Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask and Time Warner, according to comScore, there are hundreds of smaller search engines.

Newcomers keep trying because there is a lot of money to be made, said James Lamberti, senior vice president for comScore, which measures Web usage and ranks search engines by use.

In the U.S. alone, companies are spending $17 billion a year in online advertising, and 40 percent of that is spent on search engine sites, he said.

"There's still a ton of activity in this field," he said. "A lot of people think they can build a better mousetrap."

But it's very difficult to catch on. Hundreds of companies like iRazoo have started search engines. Not since Google emerged five years ago has a search engine really gotten traction, Lamberti said.

Those dominant search engines are always in a buying mood as they try to find niches that will catch on with users, he said.

In the technology world where paradigms can change faster than Google can find 63.5 million hits for "monkey," Verma pointed to that top competitor as evidence iRazoo can succeed.

Google may dominate now, but it, too, had humble beginnings, he said.

Last year, google — with a small "g" — knew it had arrived when it became an official dictionary entry. Members of the iRazoo team can dream of the day when their search engine makes the dictionary, but they could live with one of their targets taking notice and paying them a few million bucks for iRazoo.com.

"Either way is fine with us," Verma said.

For now they need to prove their site's features will appeal to users and return better search results.

• Users can recommend sites that come up in their searches. If a link had useful information, a user can vote to recommend it to others. If not, the user can vote against it. Sites that get good recommendations will show up at the top of future searches. Sites that get more "no" votes than "yes" votes eventually will be dropped.

• Users earn points every time they vote. When they earn enough points, they can redeem points for digital cameras, iPods and other gadgets. Each recommendation earns 2 points, and an iPod Shuffle costs 58,000 points.

• When users search for a term, iRazoo puts a thumbnail screen shot of the site next to the search result, allowing users to preview the page before linking to it.

Only once:

To prevent users from manipulating the system — sometimes known as "Google-bombing" as in the recent example that got Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert listed as the top result when searching for "greatest living American" — iRazoo requires users to log in, and they can only recommend a particular site once, Verma said.

The iRazoo site also tracks users by the unique address on their computers, and one user can only vote for a site once per computer, Verma said.

"You'd have to have a lot of time on your hands to get around it," he said.

Doubts if it's enough:

If there's anything the Internet has shown, it's that a lot of people have too much time on their hands. Todd Mintz, a Portland, Ore.-based Internet consultant, suspects iRazoo's checks and balances won't be enough to prevent efforts to move sites into the top spots mostly likely to be seen by users.

"There are very smart people out there who will figure out how to game it," he said.

Depending on recommendations can be risky because the site can't account for how smart users are, said Scott Hendison, another Portland Internet consultant specializing in search engine marketing and optimization — the practice of getting one group's site to come up higher in search results than another.

Moving up the list:

Search engines rely on algorithms — mathematical formulas — to find the best search results. Basically, the engine looks for keywords on sites across the Web.

As Internet marketing has evolved, people such as Hendison have figured out ways to get their clients' sites listed higher in search results on popular search engines, in turn driving traffic to their sites.

"Commercialization has kind of taken over the algorithm a little bit," Lamberti said.

Mintz said the algorithms' recommendations are better than those of strangers.

"The Google or Yahoo algorithm may not be perfect, but I'd trust them more than someone I don't know," he said.

--
http://www.irazoo.com/cachedpages/irazoo_houston_chronicle.html

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Hair Length Myths - The Long and Short of it

The Truth
The hair growth cycle is in three stages; the Anagen phase, the Catagen phase and the Telogen phase. The first stage called the anagen phase is the phase of active hair growth. In This phase hair grows from the hair follicle (these are the tiny holes that hair can be seen growing from) on average 0.33 mm/per day, which is about 10.5mm ( or approximately 1cm) per month. The length of the anagen phase varies from 2-7 years, and between 80-90% of hair on the hair on the scalp is in the anagen phase at any one time (there are over one hundred thousand hairs on the scalp) After the growing phase the follicle then enters the catagen phase. This phase lasts for approximately two weeks. Approximately 1% of hair on the scalp is in this phase at any one time. The final stage is the Telogen Phase. This is the resting phase of the growth cycle, and lasts for approximately three to four months. When the resting stage is complete the cycle begins again. As the new hair grows up the follicle it pushes out the old telogen hair. Everyday about 100 scalp hairs are shed per day, these are old telogen hairs.

Ok now the science is over let me clarify a few things. If your anagen phase is only a few years long the likely hood of your hair sweeping the floor is very slim, if however your anagen phase hair growth is years long up to 7 years, then you could have potentially very long hair (as I mentioned earlier the length to which your hair grows is genetic, so if you have hair that can grow below your shoulders you have inherited genes that allow your hair to grow for a good number of years in the anagen phase). But what about people, who have dreads/locks, how is it that their hair can grow so long? I hear you ask. Well the long and short of it, is the fact that the hair that should have dropped out in the telogen phase can't as it is waxed together with the new hair from the anagen phase. So you get hair that should have naturally fallen out being stuck to new hair, which makes it seem like the person could have hair that has a long anagen phase growth cycle.

But fear not ladies and gents whatever the length of your hair it can still look its best with TLC, It's not all about how long your hair is, it's about how good and healthy it looks. So start with a good diet, regular trims and the best hair products on the market-'Roots2Ends Natural Hair Pomade!'

--
If you're looking for quality Natural Hair Care products or a natural Hair Pomade then just visit our site.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

A web design will surely need a lot of effort as well as some creativity. However there will be times when one has to design a web page all by them. Though it may sound complex, it is actually not so and will just require some time, before someone can completely take charge of their own website.

A web page will consist of several areas, and this will include content, logos and graphic designs. The layout is also very important to consider. Web design tutorials can be found for free on the Internet. These are very useful for those who do not want to spend money on designing a web page.

When it comes to designing a web page, there will be a lot of software to consider. There will be simple ones as well as complex ones to handle. If one has to create a web design by him, it is always better to cut down on the images in the web page. Simple icons are also the best way to maintain a web page design, as this will not make things too complicated.

While designing a web page, it has to be kept in mind that the entire content is important.

Depending on what the site needs, there will be coding that has to be followed. The easiest ones used are the html and the css. Flash is used a lot of times, but this is advisable as it will take time to load. It is better to use the flash within a html coding if one compulsorily wants that effect. A web design needs a good layout and of course will need good navigation properties, for which the html coding is the best.

This can be done so that it is easier to maintain, and also gives the web page a simple but elegant look.

While designing a web page, it also has to be kept in mind that once it is complete, it should be loaded and checked how long it is taking to do so. Viewers will not have the patience to wait for the page to load, and thus it must be designed in such a way. Web page designing will have to include resolutions as well.

Today since there are several computers with different resolutions, web pages must be created in such a way that it can be viewed on any screen.

Just because there are several software to use, it does not mean that the webpage has to be cluttered with too many images. It is always wise to make sure that the web page is simple, and it must also be compatible with all web browsers. If they are so, it will allow the increase of traffic. The navigation on the web page must also be very easy to do by all the viewers.

They do not want to visit the site and find out that they are unable to find the information they are looking for. Keeping all this in mind a web page must be designed.

--
Osirion System Technologies blog on web design and web site development, web site hosting, search engine optimization and other web services.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com
