Urdu poetry gained immense popularity in the 18th century when Urdu replaced Persian as the major language of the region. Urdu poetry has its linguistic roots etched in Persian, Turkish, and Arabic, and this colourful mix of cultural and linguistic conventions was one of the reasons why it came to be loved by so many people in the Indian subcontinent.

In the 18th century, there was a scarcity of newspaper, media, and public information, so Urdu poetry became a way for people to communicate with each other about the social and political woes of the time. One of the most common forms of this communication was called a “Mushaira”, which was a social event where poets gathered to read their works to the audience. The Urdu poetry that was read at these Mushairas adhered to very strict rules of rhythm that were often determined before the event took place. They were sometime also competitive, much like the competitions that were held in the ancient Greek and Roman empires.

At every Mushaira, there was a main, or presiding poet who was usually the most appreciated and honourable poet at the gathering. In the Mushairas of the 18th century, a candle would be passed from the lowest ranking Urdu poet at the gathering to the presiding poet as a sign of respect. Urdu poetry became a highly esteemed art and members of royalty often sought the company of famous poets.

At so it is that the 18th century produced some of the most fascinating works of Urdu poetry. However, many of the most valuable poems of the time were lost because a poet’s works were only published after he achieved fame. With a striking similarity to the world of painted art, many of the most cherished works of a revered Urdu poet were only published several years after his death. The poems of Nazir, perhaps the greatest Urdu poet that ever lived, were only published 80 years after he died.

The study of Urdu poetry’s history is an amazing journey that is full of intrigue for the interested reader. But perhaps the most amazing thing about Urdu poetry is the way it continues to thrive as an art and a form of expression today. In line with the advent of internet, several online Urdu poetry communities have established themselves in cyberspace. Some of these include a Shayari portal of famous poets, an Urdu Poet forum and community, and a website that allows you to download Mushaira audio and video. Today’s fans of Urdu poetry come from many different parts of the world, and the art has received international recognition from some of the most respected literary figures of modern times.

In the Eulogy


Memorial poetry is a powerful medium of expression and often communicates our thoughts and feelings better than our own words. As such, using poetry in the eulogy can be a most fulfilling and moving experience. While writing a memory poem yourself is always a meaningful endeavor, there are many memory poems available that can accurately and appropriately express the particular message you're trying to communicate-whether it be one of sorrow, remembrance, or hope. A few examples of appropriate funeral poems include: All Is Well by Henry Scott Holland, Farewell by Emily Dickinson, No Longer Mourn for Me by William Shakespeare, or Psalm 23: The Lord is My Shepherd.

On Acknowledgement Cards

Often the best way to express your deepest gratitude for those close friends and family members who stood by your side during this difficult time is to send acknowledgement cards. While, of course, a personally written message is a meaningful gesture, it's also common to include a poem. This poem can be a thank you, a memorial poem pertaining to the loss of your loved one, or a general poem about life and death. Whichever you chose, using a poem graciously expresses your sentiments for their love and support. Below is an example of a general poem you might include:

After someone passes away, friends and family often want a consistent reminder of the wonderful influence and life of their loved one. Since visiting a gravesite or final resting place everyday is improbable, a small token of the deceased's life is a meaningful and practical solution. This is often achieved through an inscription on a particular keepsake or memento. Whether it's a custom figurine, plaque, or personal item of the deceased's, an in memory of" poem is a fitting supplement. Since the lengths of inscriptions are contingent upon the size of the object, the in memory of" poem you choose should reflect the space available. Whether it is poetry written by a modern author or not there are always poems out there that today's reader can relate to, find inspiration, wisdom or simply entertainment. I would love to see more general interest as well as more time spent in schools to get the young readers attracted to poetry.
Poetry can stand on its own or be combined with other arts like music. Not everyone associates poetry with songs. Songs are such a great part of our everyday life and we may not even think that probably most of them started as lyric poetry. Most all of us have our favorite song. We know all the lyrics by heart since we listened to it many times. Many times we associate the song with certain events. Just hearing the song on the radio can take us back to that event or inspire certain mood.
Poetry is very powerful medium. It is also very fun to write. Children especially are very fond of it and it is quite easy to direct their interest to writing poems. Children's imagination is quite vivid and they usually have no trouble finding the subject for their writing. I think it is important to stimulate and cherish children's ability to write.
But it doesn't mean that if you are an adult it's too late to start writing poetry. There are a lot of references online that help with rhyming if you choose more traditional format. Reading examples of the work of other authors helps too.
It is very gratifying to write a poem. It's not like you need to write a novel to prove that you can write. Just find a quiet place and tap into this inner energy, which was probably there all along, and have fun. You can make it a family event too. Good place to start could be a poem about your own family. Personalizing the greeting cards for friends and family with short poems is another way to express your hidden talents. Just wait until you see the surprise on their faces; they will certainly appreciate your efforts to make them feel very special. Good Luck finding a Shakespeare within you!

There are different kinds of poems like hate poems, romantic poems, friendship poems, sweet love poems and many. Appreciating simple things brings the entire new perspective on life. November Sun is my little exercise to attempt to look at the world through the child's eye.

NOVEMBER SUN

When frosty wind blew not so strong,
It took the leaves in graceful glide.
They lingered just a bit too long,
Like they were hoping we forgot.

Though raking them was quite a drag,
I missed them waving from the trees.
But then, I thought, November sun
Has more of Mother Earth to see.

I picked one up, so big and bright;
It told me: "Don't cry over me.
I will be back with all my pals,
I'll come next year, I guarantee".

Relieved a bit and quite surprised,
Kept raking them without much fun.
When I looked up there was the prize…
They did unveil November sun.
