One method besides using antivirus software that can be used but it often not used is an anti-virus card. Most people aren't aware of the fact that anti-virus cards are out there on the market at all. They were developed nearly 15 years ago to monitor the things that are on a computer. Due to the fact that there is very little talk about antivirus cards, there is little hope that this will be the long term answer for solving computer security issues. It is possible though, that it could be an important tool in the future. One more popular option besides using anti-virus software is the use and application of having a network firewall. This form of internet security is more known and generally does have some success. The reason that it is more successful than other things is because of the fact that the firewall that is set up does not allow unknown or unsafe programs to be used on the operating system.

While network firewalls are generally seen as fairly effective, they usually are not used as a replacement for anti-virus software. In some cases though, it is used as a replacement. One other form of internet security in lieu of anti-virus software is the use of system virtualization. This method of security will not allow the operating system to be changed or damaged by a virus. This method while effective, doesn't allow for the removal of things that may already be on a computer. It is very likely in the near future that there will be some new things that come out on the market in order to improve overall internet security. It is not known though whether it will be some better software, or another tool that may not be used.

Security Issues On Social Network Websites http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/security-issues-on-social-network-websites.html http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/security-issues-on-social-network-websites.html Fri, 04 Sep 2009 06:37:30 -0500
According to psychologists, the thrill of establishing new relationships over the Internet can be attributed to the expanding growth of social network websites. However, in the zeal to become `social`, we tend to ignore the many security issues hovering over such social network websites. Without a doubt, these social networks help us a lot in establishing contact with our friends, colleagues and relatives, but it is also true that we need to be aware of the endemic security issues in context of these social networking websites.

Before venturing into the steps that we can take, to save ourselves from being a prey to the security issues, we need to understand the real reason behind them. Every social networking website asks the user to fill up a registration form, mentioning therein all the required details. The broad divisions into which the details are segregated are social, professional and personal. The details carry your contact information, email id, your current profession and your personal likes and dislikes. There is a chance that the information you are supplying can be provocative to some and might land you into serious trouble.

This is just one of the many security issues prevalent over social networking websites. There is also a chance that the person whom you actually think to be your friend/colleague turns out to be an impostor. There is also a sect of people who get provoked by the kind of religious feelings/political views that you support. Remember that all these details are filled up by you and only you can protect yourself from the clutches of security issues over social networking websites.

Let us now take an overview of how you can protect yourself from being a victim to these security issues,

1. Never ever share your password with anyone, not even with the closest of your friend/family.

2. Just after you finish typing in your user name and password, remember to turn off the `remember me` button. This helps immensely in protecting your ID from any security issues present in these social network sites.

3. Make it a mandatory habit to always logout of the social network site after you have finished using it.

4. After filling up the required information in the registration form, never forget to edit the privacy settings of the same. If possible, it is always recommended to change the settings to `viewable only to my friends` rather than `viewable to everyone`. This way you can save your profile from being visible to everyone in public.

5. Never provide sensitive information while filling up these forms. What might seem as ordinary to you, can be provocative material to many.

6. In case, you find that your profile has been tampered with, immediately report the matter to the `report abuse/violations` sections.

These small steps can work wonders in providing you with the most solid protection against all possible security issues lurking in such social network websites. Social networking is fun but with a little care we can avoid our personal content/details from being a part of the public, as a whole. The phrase, `A stitch in time saves nine`, is quite apt in this context. If we try to be a little aware of the problems which might crop up because of our ignorance, we can save our profile from all kinds of security issues over social network websites.

Critical Information Warefare And Cyberwar http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/critical-information-warefare-and-cyberwar.html http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/critical-information-warefare-and-cyberwar.html Thu, 13 Aug 2009 19:58:27 -0500
Downside to info revolution- With the current information revolution, the problem of netwar and cyberwar has grown to immense proportions of impotence, dominating numerous political discussions worldwide. Numerous activist-, extremist- and terrorist groups have successfully employed the world wide web and cellular technology in the forms of calls, sms's and mms's to spread the word on their various causes and beliefs in turn recruit new members, coordinate activities and disseminate propaganda. These network-style organizations give non-state individuals the opportunity to challenge Government authority in a way rather unprecedented and unpredictable.

Attack types- Several types cyber attack can be used in warfaree and cyberwar. These attacks include but are definitely not limited to cyber espionage, data gathering ,denial of service attacks, equipment and activity disruptions, critical infrastructure attacks and compromised counterfeit hardware.

Strategising- Countries from all over the world have been brainstorming strategies to use the world wide web as an information atomic bomb with the aim of targeting stock exchanges as well as government systems, utilities and activities. An activity extremely reminiscent since cession of the Cold War, is the testing of weak links in networks to gain access to intelligent information. The use of weak spot in systems and networks are thus clearly not a new warfaree strategy.

Leaders in warfare- China is regarded as the forerunning in warfaree and cyberwar, with accusations of spying and cyber attacks on prominent countries such as India, Germany and the United States of America. These attacks have however been rubbished and criticized by the China Intelligence Agency, Government and the country's citizens, with arguments that a country's Government cannot be blamed for compromised computers under the controlled of criminal minds in the form of hackers.

Why the focus on China?- Many people may ask why the focus in terms of warfaree and cyberwar is so much on China, well the reason is simply- because of the country's immense volume of resources. American Cyber War officials have been developing and testing several "wargames" or attack simulations to determine the extent and exact areas of vulnerability in the United States of America, should a serious attack be launched on the country's Internet resources. To date, a couple of dozen Nations acknowledge and boast with highly developed Cyber War capability and capacity, who are also openly hostile towards the United States of America. These include but are not limited to China, North Korea and Iran. The Wargames are developed with Chinese mentality and imagination in mind. Should the wargame be coupled with a Chinese computer boffin on the development team who knows just enough about the web infrastructure, we all would be in for a big surprise or rather scare. What's even more worrying is the fact that the majority of the most professional attackers on the world wide web, don't have buckets full of money or an army of soldiers, all that's required is just the right amount of information. This type of information is however very expensive to obtain and comprises mainly of previously undetected flaws in software, specifically software controlling routers and other fundamental elements of the world wide web.

Establishment of Separate Internet- Attack simulations have identified an enormous amount of flaws and vulnerabilities in the United States of America, which are practical impossible to rectify or re-enforce in turn leaving the country totally unprotected. This has lead to the Department of Defence's establishment of Separate Internet (SIPRI). At first sight SIPRI looks exactly like the Internet, but you can't access the system from the regular Internet. Over and above this, SIPRI transfer most of its data encrypted, which means that even if you successfully tap into the data, you'll still be required to decrypt it. Even with the use SIPRI, much of the military activities are conducted over the regular Internet, we have all come to know and love. Just shows you how highly dependant commercial firms and government agencies, are normal Internet connectivity.

What other flaws have attack simulations pin-pointed thus far?- Attack simulations have shown that even if SIPRI remains up and running that military operations could still be crippled. This can be attributed to military's need and requirements which are solely dependant upon normal internet connectivity. These needs include supplies, equipment maintenance and administration. Simulations have also reveal high risk enemy vulnerabilities. Its safe to assume-no one is safe! The million Dollar question is- how do we handle this sticky situation? The answer comes in the form of scenarios, contingency plans and tons more simulations, to get a holistic view of every countries offensive and defensive Cyber War capabilities and capacities. Just as the world wide web develops and evolves, so should Cyber War plans and strategies.

Influence on satellites- Communications satellites form an essential part of military operation and use, this includes GPS, satellite phones and moving information. The greatest disadvantage is the Internet fibre optics cabling located underground. The weakness spot does however not lie with the cabling, but rather the software used to operate the Internet. The battlefield comprises of hundreds of thousands of software bits and bytes ranging from browsers to router switches as well as millions of hardware items for example servers and routers.

Israeli-Palestinian cyber war - Even though the majority of ethereal cyberwar types are unrelated to the military, the impact and implications for not only cyber wars but also for national sovereignty, international law and relations, are huge. For example Israeli-Palestinian cyberwar which started in September 2000. Attacks were launched on the websites of Hezbollah, Hamas and Palestinian State Authority's by Israeli hackers. A virtual-Jihad had to be called-in by Palestinians, who retaliated by attacks on official Israeli websites. Thousands of sites were attacked criss-cross, resulting in an immensely strained Internet infrastructure. Development and maintenance of world wide support networks are essential in the battle to combat and eliminate cyberwar. Governmental and State computer hacking is extremely difficult to prevent and often justifiably. This is most probably the reason why Palestinians have waged cyberwar with great success when compared to real life warfare.

The world wide network infrastructures are always on threats,I hope some day we just see cyberpeace against cyberwar.

Further Equipping Cybersecurity Professionals http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/further-equipping-cybersecurity-professionals.html http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/further-equipping-cybersecurity-professionals.html Sat, 08 Aug 2009 14:35:45 -0500
There is a growing call for cybersecurity education to be further revamped. Many professionals, Internet users, legislators, and IT experts are calling for diversity in cybersecurity education and training. Professionals in the field should be trained and educated not only in the specific technology but also in other related subjects like business strategies, ethics, human relations, and law. To some proponents of this initiative, cybersecurity professionals should function more like renaissance men and women who are geared to meeting modern day challenges.

There is a growing call for developing a new and more skilled breed of multidisciplinary experts in the online security. Many education and IT experts are also asking diversity into psychology and organizational behavior. There is a need to understand that online security practitioners are practically trained instead of educated. Current trainings for cybersecurity professionals include use of certain applications, techniques, and tools.

There is no specific course that helps professionals gain better and useful understanding of behaviors and principles that make up Internet security. Thus, diversification of training to transform as formal education is endorsed by many.

It is also highlighted that currently, there are only a few universities and institutions that offer cybersecurity programs for would-be Internet professionals. Aside from making cybersecurity a formal education, many people are also calling for the subject to be a full-length profession. This underlines the importance and necessity of online security.

Some IT experts are already envisioning a professional degree in cybersecurity that covers specific technical subjects like distributed systems, computer security principles, networking, software engineering, systems reliability, cryptography, and use of human factors and interfaces. Of course, mentioned specific multi-disciplinary subjects are also proposed to be included.

There are also calls to make trainings and education for cybersecurity a multidisciplinary undergraduate program in college. This is to institute and enhance professionals' system trustworthiness, which should be the foundation of IT professionals majoring in Internet security. Proponents like cybersecurity courses to be analogous to pre-med and pre-law courses in tertiary education. Several courses should be offered from different academic departments.

The goal of broadening cybersecurity education is to facilitate usage of every conceivable policy and technical tools for achievement of trustworthiness. Doing so is also believed to ensure that IT solutions would be eventually evaluated in broader societal contexts. This is for the purpose of contemplating trade-offs and risk management between varied social values like privacy versus accountability.

Of course, it is just obvious that Internet security has become a really important issue these days. As almost all businesses move only and basic business transactions get completed and coursed through the Internet, ensuring overall security is very important. Cybersecurity should be addressed more. Professionals of course need to be further equipped with necessary education way beyond training for technical skills. The Internet is fast and is constantly expanding. So do online security problems and issues.

It is better to improve current systems and further equip professionals than to be sorry in the future.

Cyber Security: Password Protected http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/cyber-security-password-protected.html http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/cyber-security-password-protected.html Fri, 07 Aug 2009 13:45:01 -0500
You have a bunch of personal emails from friends and occasionally send some your self but the whole lot of your mails in your inbox are spam and other promotional garbage, so why do you have to care that much. But the thing is, those who are able to gain access to your email accounts are often not truly satisfied with that level of attach and are in reality just preparing for a much bigger intrusion.

Before you know it, they can get information about your social security number of even bank accounts. Your personal emails contain heaps of information which can be used by hackers for their own personal gain.

Having a good password installed is therefore a good deterrent for hackers or attackers. It ensures that proper authentication is verified first before you gain access to personal information. It is therefore important that you make up a good password. A poorly made one will just be ineffective and totally useless against hackers.

For instance, using part of your name as a password would be just too easy to crack. It will not be a deterrent at all. To add to this, there are applications like virus and worms that can actually penetrate a secure or confidential system just because it has a weak password installed.

Example of weak passwords, aside from a derivative from your name, would be using numbers that coincides with birthdays, phone numbers, addresses and information about your family or stuff. Sure, these are easy to remember but that thinking will also cause you problems later on. These kinds of numeric passwords are just easy to solve. The same thing goes with dictionary based passwords which are those words that you picked up from a dictionary.

Now in making up your password, it would be a lot better if you use combinations of letter, numbers and other techniques. You could intentionally misspell the words so you won't fall for dictionary attackers. You can add numbers and a combination of upper and lower cases. Or you could assign a code.

You can abbreviate something that if you love "watching soap shows on TV" you can take the first letters of the word "WsSoT" and combine it with a relevant numbers. Not only would the acronym easy to remember but it would be difficult for hackers to crack. However, avoid using famous quotes, catch phrases, lyrics, poem and even pick up lines. Go for something you invented.

Also, remember that having a longer password is better. The more characters you have the harder it is to guess or the more difficult to decipher the combinations. Also, don't use the same password twice for your other accounts. Although this is quite tempting since you don't have to create a new one and remember it every time, when an attacker does get a password from one of your accounts, the first thing he will do is to try the same password for all your other accounts.

Cyber security begins with you. Keeping your personal information safe lies first on password protected access to your files, systems and networks. Having a right and strong password will help fight off attackers.

Electronic Miami Fingerprinting http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/electronic-miami-fingerprinting.html http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/electronic-miami-fingerprinting.html Wed, 29 Jul 2009 14:00:14 -0500
What would happen if you know yourself so you can say with certainty: "No thank you, I prefer ..."

How would you look at the other, if you truly understand that their choice is perfect for them?

Law of Attraction teaches us to recognize our personal preferences by noticing things like feel, and ask yourself, "which feels better? This or that?" When we take the time to notice our feelings, we learn about ourselves in such a way that leads to great personal freedom and happiness.

Before I learned about the law of attraction and how I draw people, situations and opportunities, in full accordance with my vibration (Vibes), I tried to live a set of standards and principles. I remember when I asked my pastor if he could give me a list of these principles, so I could see that I lived right. I did all that I could be a perfect mother, the good housewife and selfless Christian. I thought that, in line with what other people expected, I would also be happy. I was not happy, happy man. I was a very emotional and eventually physical pain.

But the law of Attraction has taught me to notice when something does not feel well, because the discomfort is an indication that something is not good for me. Anything outside of alignment with who I am and all I came to fulfill the goal will not feel good. WOW! I was placing my hand on a hot stove and trying to feel comfortable with pain. I lived with chronic emotional and physical pain for so long that I became numb to it. (A third degree burn is painless because the nerve endings all burned out.)

One day, the truth, finally, I fall: Only I can choose what is best for me. No one can tell me what's good for me - only I can say. And so, as I say it is noticed, as everyone feels, and then looking for ideas, answers, ideas, or what feels best.

"Good feels good. Bad feels bad." -Abraham-Hicks

Knowledge and performance of my personal reasons for me to fulfill all his goals - of course. Everything I set out to do in this life is already programmed into me. The way I read the program "is to notice what brings me great joy, and to follow that example. In fact, it is the fastest and easiest way to find the performance. Before I knew about the law attraction, I felt like I lost 30 years of my life, trying to endure a bad marriage. But within 5 years of application of the law of gravity in the way described in this article, I felt caught up on life. "About two years ago, I had the profound realization:" Today I am exactly where I was would be remiss if I did the first 55 years of his life differently. "That is a great feeling!

Now I tell my students: "Your personal preferences as soon as you as your fingerprints . Only you can do certain things in this life, and your preferences where you actually live the life of the most satisfying ways of joy!"

How about you? Do you see yourself in this light? You wanted to know why you do not fit into the crowd? Are you ready to take themselves and their preferences as a right for you?

How Do I Unblock Hotmail? http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/how-do-i-unblock-hotmail.html http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/how-do-i-unblock-hotmail.html Tue, 28 Jul 2009 03:29:55 -0500
Email Services

Personal and business email has changed how we communicate with friends and business contacts completely. There are numerous different email services available - everything from individual email services like Hotmail, AIM and Yahoo to services that provide access to multiple email services like Meebo and Pidgen.

However, constantly checking personal email can be problematic for companies, schools and public internet computers alike. Network administrators have grave and justified concerns about emails infecting work stations and entire networks with malware, viruses and even worms as a result of both receiving and sending emails from unauthorized outside internet email.

Filtering Software

One of the ways in which email services like Hotmail and others are blocked is through the use of internet filtering software. In large part computer network administrators place internet filtering software prevent unauthorized access to outside emails and to prevent web surfing on websites that are unauthorized or considered potentially dangerous to the network. In both cases, the primary concern is that work stations and the network server may be infected with malicious software that can destroy files, gather private and proprietary information illegally and in general create mayhem and destruction. It can costs schools and businesses literally thousands of dollars in work time and lost productivity to scrub not only the infected work stations, but also the network server and other infected work stations as the malware spreads from station to station.

Bypassing Filtering Software

For students and employees alike who want to unblock Hotmail and other email services, the answer is a membership on a proxy service. Proxy services go around filtering software by presenting their logon page as an innocent and non-aggressive web site that does not pose a threat to the computer network. Proxy services are usually by membership only, so the user needs to purchase a membership that will grant them access to the proxy server. Once a user has logged on to the proxy server, they are able to access their Hotmail unblocking abilities, along with gain access to other email services and websites that the filtering software blocks.

The other benefit of using bypass proxy services is that all of the user's activities are anonymous and cannot be tracked because they are encrypted. This means that both incoming and outgoing activities are encrypted, protecting them from potentially being hacked or from the prying eyes of those who might be interested in what is being typed or what websites are being visited.

Scotiabank joins forces with international payment gateway, First Atlantic Commerce, to offer 3D Secure solutions across the English Caribbean Region http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/scotiabank-joins-forces-with-international-payment-gateway-first-atlantic-commerce-to-offer-3d-secure-solutions-across-the-english-caribbean-region.html http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/scotiabank-joins-forces-with-international-payment-gateway-first-atlantic-commerce-to-offer-3d-secure-solutions-across-the-english-caribbean-region.html Mon, 27 Jul 2009 06:11:55 -0500
Through this partnership, Internet merchants in the Caribbean will now be able to support 3D Secure for Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode on their web sites for the first time. The service will be available to merchants in Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Anguilla, Turks & Caicos and Guyana with rollout to an additional 11 countries in the English Caribbean planned in the near future.

"This is an extremely important service for online merchants," said Andrea Wilson, CEO of First Atlantic Commerce. "The objective of 3D Secure is to reduce fraud through the verification of the cardholder at the time of payment in a ‘CardNotPresent' environment, such as the Internet. When implemented, 3D Secure protects online merchants from the financial losses associated with "I didn't do it" chargebacks. We are very excited about making this more available in the Region."

Both Visa and MasterCard offer chargeback liability shift for fraud related chargebacks when the transaction is authenticated through Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode. This also includes liability shift for attempted Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode requests, which means that even if the cardholder is not enrolled, the merchant is not liable for certain Reason Code chargebacks. So the benefits to both Scotiabank International and its merchants are significant.

"The launch of this service to our existing and prospective Internet merchants is yet another way that Scotiabank is helping our clients in minimizing online fraud, while maximizing sales," said Rob Macdonald Scotiabank's Director, Merchant Acquiring Services. "We have worked with FAC for many years processing millions of dollars of credit card transactions for a range of businesses and Government bodies, and implementing 3D Secure is a natural next step in the evolution of our solutions to these important customers."

The benefits associated with 3D Secure:
- Provides internet merchants with the ability to verify a consumer's true identity through a secure, electronic, non "face to face" authentication process.
- Enables all parties in an eCommerce payment transaction to transmit confidential and valid payment data
- Provides verification to the merchant that the buyer is the authorized owner of a card account
- Offers immediate protection from fraudrelated chargebacks ("I didn't do it" chargebacks.)

FAC's credit card merchant processing and risk mitigation solutions are compliant and PCI certified, and also available to banks and processors in other regions including Europe, CEMEA and Asia.

Purchasing locks for commercial Buildings http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/purchasing-locks-for-commercial-buildings.html http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/purchasing-locks-for-commercial-buildings.html Sun, 19 Jul 2009 16:01:28 -0500
Most commercial buildings, from warehouses to schools, rely on a mixture of lever locks, deadlocks and mortise locks. Each type of lock normally is available in standard, medium and heavy duty construction. Standard duty locks are suitable for privacy locks, patio locks, classrooms and storerooms. Medium duty locks are suitable for office doors, passageways and classrooms. Heavy duty locks are suitable for entry doors, apartments and offices. When choosing a lock, consider how secure the door needs to be--heavy duty locks provide more security than standard duty locks.

Study the lock construction to determine if it's going to do the job. For example, in choosing a heavy duty cylindrical lever lock, look for the following specifications: 1) Meets ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 1 for key-in-lever locksets; 2) Allen-head screws are used on the inside levers to prevent vandalism; 3) Lever is free-wheeling when the outside lever is locked; 4) Meets requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1991; and 5) Cylinder assemblies are removable in case the lock ever needs to be rekeyed.

Decide if you can use a mortise lock or need to install a deadlock paired with a cylindrical lock. A mortise lock provides ease of entry since the lever will open the door after the top locking mechanism is unlocked. A deadlock/cylindrical lock combination requires unlocking both the deadlock and the lever lock but provides more security.

Consider having a special coating added to lock levers installed on doors leading to rooms containing hazardous materials. The rough sensation of the abrasive coating alerts anyone opening the door to the potential dangers on the other side.

Added security can be found in electrified door locks. The best locks offer either a "fail safe" or "fail secure' option. A fail safe latch bolt
can be operated by the lever from either side except when the outer lever is electrically locked, then neither lever opens the door. By contrast, on a fail secure lever the deadlock latch bolt can be operated by the inside lever at all times, only the outside lever is inoperable when the latch is electrically locked.

The best lock suppliers will offer locks for every need, including asylum locks, dormitory locks and closet locks. Expect to pay from $40 for a basic lock up to $300 for the most secure locks.

Using Comparison Websites Can Save You More Money Than The High Street http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/using-comparison-websites-can-save-you-more-money-than-the-high-street.html http://www.articletrader.com/internet/security/using-comparison-websites-can-save-you-more-money-than-the-high-street.html Fri, 10 Jul 2009 16:45:40 -0500
Researching a product after finding the price can always cause complication, like not reading all the information properly. So to begin with ignore the price factor, find an item you like, using the example of a television. Know exactly what sized screen you would like best and what you would be happy with and whether it has high definition (HD) available or free view and how many scart sockets you require for things like games consoles or DVD players.

You should be able to find out the round-about price from a nationally recognised store like Argos, Curry's or Dixons but then take the official title of the TV you have selected and paste the details into a comparisons website. Always take into consideration the option of having something posted and whether this will cost you extra but you should have saved some money on the purchase just by finding an on-line store.

Then use your head does the website you can purchase it from seem suspect in anyway? Does it have a company address? Can you contact them via the phone? Try it just if you're not convinced and confirm the price and order. If you're not sure about giving your details over the internet then you could call them but always look for a verified security certificate to ensure your personal data is safely transferred to their website via an encrypted secure socket layer (otherwise known as a SSL certificate).

If you have any doubts then do not use their website but searching on-line for comparison websites can save you hundreds of pounds.
