I used to be self-employed as a jobbing carpenter, specialising in old town and country houses. Being my own boss had always appealed to me ever since I was an apprentice. Maybe it was the way everything was down to you, and answering to nobody apart from your customers. But after 10 years of working on my own, and apart from the occasional job where I had to call in some extra help, I was offered the chance to work for a partnership of carpenters. I took it, for a range of reasons, but mostly because it was essentially what I was doing more of by taking on extra help. But this way I would be doing less of the business admin, and more of what I liked - working with wood, on some really rewarding projects.

So when I look around me at my colleagues having their lunch, I realise that it wouldn't have been just any partnership I would have entered into. I knew these carpenters fairly well, as two had been apprentices with, and the other two I had called in from time to time to help with bigger jobs.

Being in a team also means buying assets for the business is less of an impact. We're currently upgrading some of our equipment and power tools. A series of purchases like this can be a real issue for a self-employed carpenter, but when you're in a team the cost is spread out. Also, you need to take into account the fact that when you're working on your own, you may need to buy a piece of equipment that may be only rarely used. Hiring is an option of course, but this is a cost as well and it's a good idea to have as much of your gear owned as possible.

For example, we needed some new area lights the other week. Because as a team we can work into the night without tiring ourselves out by doing it in a shift pattern. The intricacies of our work mean the lights need to be up to the job. Even if I was doing the job on my own it would have taken weeks rather than days, and the cost of lighting would have made the job nonviable financially.

Hiring would have been expensive too. But now we've got the ability to buy the right equipment to do jobs efficiently. Maybe I will go back to working on my own one day, but right now, by the serenity of the lake, team work suits me perfectly.

Home Business: Things to Know http://www.articletrader.com/business/networking/home-business-things-to-know.html http://www.articletrader.com/business/networking/home-business-things-to-know.html Thu, 15 Oct 2009 11:24:25 -0500
In having your own home business, it is critical that you become involved with all aspects of it. Starting from the idea of the product, all the way to when it hits the shelves for consumers. If you put other people in charge of certain aspects, it can be very easy to get manipulated if you don't know what is going on.

You should take the business seriously; it should be something you truly believe in. If you work hard at it, good things will happen. If you slack off at it, nothing will come of the business. And if nothing happens to the business, you could be stuck in a 9-5 job in a tiny cubicle.

The biggest thing you must become familiar with when running your home business is the Internet. This is a key tool for a successful business. Having a website is great for customers because it enables them to have access to your company 24/7 at the click of a mouse. You should be able to know how to design a website and if you don't there are several places on the Internet that can either help you or do it for you.

Exploration is a great thing to do. You should study all aspects of your business. You should become familiar with the product you are creating. You should know your competitors and how you can set yourself apart from them. You should also explore ways of how you can handle your business better. People are coming up with new marketing and other business ideas everyday and you should know about all the options that are available to you.

Having a home business is great. You can wake up whenever you want, wear what you and work when you want. However there is a lot of discipline that comes with this and you need to be able to stay focused. There are just a few of the many things one should know and be aware of when owning your own business.

Social Media For Small Business - How to Use Twitter For Your Business http://www.articletrader.com/business/networking/social-media-for-small-business-how-to-use-twitter-for-your-business.html http://www.articletrader.com/business/networking/social-media-for-small-business-how-to-use-twitter-for-your-business.html Tue, 21 Jul 2009 17:45:44 -0500 Twitter for business purposes. In response to those questions, I wanted to write out a short list of Twitter for business best practices and some of the most popular tools that make these practices possible. This list of tools, techniques, and what is possible is changing and expanding almost daily with the explosion of Twitter usage and discussions of Twitter merging with some other site/partner. Thus I expect to stay current on using Twitter for business purposes we will need to repost more on this topic from time to time.

• Be Real (don't hide) -
It is important that you completely fill in the registration and profile information when signing up on Twitter. If you set up your Twitter Id as a business name it is less real than using a personal name. If you still want the business name in there, you could possibly add the company after the persons name (like Dell computer has been known to do with names like "PatrickAtDell"). In the profile section, post your website. I wouldn't recommend a short URL here if you can avoid it since this is your brand and the full link helps in your SEO rankings. Also in the profile section you enter in relevant search terms in your profile description.

With the profile bio limited to 160 characters, you want to get the relevant keywords included. By doing so you don't have much space to talk about the business specifically. However you can also squeeze in more content about your business including other websites, urls, logos, or content by uploading a custom Twitter background. Be aware though that the search engines and tools people are using to find you will not pick up words or content located in the background image. That's why the keywords have to be in your description.

Finally and possibly most important is that you need to upload a picture. People want to see who they are communicating with, even if you are representing a company. If Twitters don't think you are real, they are less likely to be interested in following you and learning more about your business (we are Twittering for Business here remember). If you try to hide with no picture, just a logo, an incomplete profile or no description, the cynical side of social media marketing will take over, people will assume the worst and they won't follow you.

• Participate (be Relevant, contribute, share, respond) -
For a business or business person to be relevant in the Twitter conversation going on, they need to participate. Ask questions and elicit responses. Respond to other user's questions. Tweet not only your own relevant contributions but retweet (RT) other Tweets that you find valuable. Promote and/or attribute others where there's a reason to do so. You can build a following faster if you appear trust worthy (easiest way to do that is by actually being trustworthy), know your subject matter and don't look like you are just out the get them to buy something.

The graders and ranking sites look at both your following as well as your activity. There's a number of search tools that will help you here to see who is talking about what and who is specifically responding to you (for example with @replies). These tools can help you determine where you might want to jump into a conversation and build that relevance. This is important in being noticed by searches from other users. You build following with contribution, relevance, and responsiveness.

The number of keywords in your tweet cloud is also important. Are you an active Tweeter? If so, what are you tweeting about? Are you relatively consistent in what you discuss? There's a big difference between using Twitter like text messaging and blogging each trip to the grocery store and using Twitter for business with a targeted, specific approach to your online identity and the topics you take on. Again, the grading web sites will pick up on this targeted approach and quickly move you to "elite" status in your chosen keywords if you Tweet with some forethought.

• Automate (where possible) -
Reduce the time it takes you to research what is happening in the Twitterdom, speed up your own Tweeting, get yourself followed automatically, and build ranking faster and easier. There are several automation type tools available to help build your Twitter for business presence without having to hire a back room full of people:

--TweetBeep -Set up alerts for various keywords, people, different attitudes, and links.
--Summize (Twitter Search) - Search for your keywords, click a button and you have a custom RSS feed that you can read via your favorite feed reader, or put on your Google or Yahoo home page. A synopsis available on what's happening.
--Tweetlater - one of the more versatile tools related to Twitter. A quick list of services include; emailing a digest of Tweets (like TweetBeep), Pre-scheduling tweets to keep your tweet stream flowing, pre-saving Tweets or common snippets of tweets for faster Tweeting, Automating direct messages to people that follow you, and managing multiple Twitter Ids at the same time.
--Twitscoop - extends what Twitter Search can do with both real-time searches of specific keywords as well as what the overall Twitterdom is talking about using (the Tweet Cloud). It also shows you the hot trends in the cloud.
--Twellow - This is another research tool that extends Twitter for business use, Twellow searches people's profiles or what they are Tweeting about under specific, predefined categories, or a general search. Twellow will also show you geographically where people are Tweeting from in the US and Canada.
--Remember the Milk (RTM) - A real unique and cutting edge use of Twitter. RTM is a Task management service (set up reminders, tasks, things to do, etc.) for an individual or a small team or business. You can interact with Remember the Milk through Twitter. You simply follow the Twitter ID @rtm and then send it commands like retrieving your current tasks, adding new tasks, setting up automated reminders, even sending tasks to other Twitter users. This is a great adaptation of Twitter for business use.

• Re-purpose existing content-
With taking care of customers, blogging, keeping up profiles on numerous social media sites, all while running a business, maintaining your online presence can quickly become overwhelming. Use tools like Twitterfeed to automatically Tweet content from an RSS feeds of your other blogs or sites, and Alterthingy, another tool that helps you aggregate and repost your content across the multiple sites, and profiles you need to maintain.

In addition, several blogs (Wordpress for example) are building Twitter widgets to be able to display your tweets (and others) on your blog, thus keeping the blog actively changing and a target for better search engine ranking and more active visits.

There are any number of other ways you can use Twitter for business and this note really only scratches the surface of what is possible. As the popularity of Twitter grows so will the unique and inventive ways of using this innovative tool.

A Quick Run Down Of Conference Calls http://www.articletrader.com/business/networking/a-quick-run-down-of-conference-calls.html http://www.articletrader.com/business/networking/a-quick-run-down-of-conference-calls.html Mon, 20 Jul 2009 05:14:11 -0500
Conference calls are often referred to as an ATC, which stands for Audio Tele-Conference. These services are usually used in businesses who operate multiple branches all over the country or the world. With conference call services people can oversee issues in all departments all over the world and you can communicate efficiently. You're also able to remain in contact with all required co-workers without having to phone everyone separately. This will help to save time and perhaps most importantly, save money.

So I have gone through how a conference call works. Now I am going to explain about what different service there are available. Starting with the favoured choice for larger corporations, the Conference Bridge. Conference Bridges are basically a private telecommunication network installed on-site.

This enables all departments within a company to contact one-another whenever it is necessary for free. However it'll still cost money to make outside calls. And you also have the most profitable feature. The conference call service. With conference bridges set-up you can host meetings with people all over the world, minimising travel and accommodation costs. A conference bridge is a highly technical service and it requires specialist operators to keep things running. Operators will want paying and are needed full time. All of the equipment, installation and maintenance are not very cheap either. Conference bridges can save lots of money when you look at the bigger picture but you need a considerable amount of money to purchase them. This explains why usually only large companies who have them installed.

Many smaller companies don't really to use conference call services quite so much but if they do they can use a normal land-line telephone. It cost more then a typical telephone call but that's the only cost you need to take care of. The cost of the call covers everything. As long as you have a decent telecommunications provider you shouldn't ever experience any trouble.

In modern times the internet is constantly expanding and more and more people rely on Messengers like Skype or Windows Live. In the case of most instant messengers it's completely free to communicate with any users of the same service. My favourite is the Skype messenger. Operation is simple and it works great. You can also make calls to land-line telephones and mobiles or even make a video call. You can buy calling credit for calling land-lines and mobile phones anywhere on the planet. Saying that though the call costs are not all that much cheaper compared to my home phone. To talk to other Skype users its totally free though so what more can you ask for.

So lets have a quick recap. A conference bridge is the favoured option for larger businesses. They will save money in the long run but cost a lot to purchase and install. Then there's the classic land-line conference call services. These cost more but do for the odd conference call. And that leaves the instant messenger. With Skype and some others you can host conference calls between multiple users for free. If you use this option, just get all staff or colleagues to use the same software.

Digital Business Communities: Leveraging Social Networking for Corporate Networking http://www.articletrader.com/business/networking/digital-business-communities-leveraging-social-networking-for-corporate-networking.html http://www.articletrader.com/business/networking/digital-business-communities-leveraging-social-networking-for-corporate-networking.html Fri, 17 Jul 2009 01:11:24 -0500 Man has always been a social animal. He is always chatting, talking over the phone, text messaging, blogging. Every hour, every moment he is interacting and engaging with the world around him. His need for association and affiliation has led him to the development of families, villages, towns, cities, kingdoms, states, religion, communities, etc. As the legendary Aristotle states "Every state is a community of some kind, and every community is established with a view for some good, for men always act in order to obtain what they think good." As the world evolves these social groups transcends into even more complex versions, bringing us to the phenomenon in this age of cyber technology, monikered digital communities.

Till a few years ago Web 2.0 was the concept understood and followed only by computer techies and geeks. But the recent years have seen a incessant rise of digital communities with participation of even the non-techie mass, through Social Media. I have been fortunate to lead web communications for my company and in the months since taking up this role, I have realized that today, digital communities have touched the realms of the corporate world too, Apart from the consumer orientation of social media, it has grown imperative for business-to-business marketing and communications. Blogs, Social networks, Bookmarking, Folksonomies, Wikis have become important channels for companies to communicate with their customers.

Companies have come up with innovative ways to grab eyeballs and mindshare on their online presence through such community initiatives. I have been learning the importance of the same and developing our community initiatives at titled "FTCommunity" a platform of collaboration of all participants of the financial world. And I am amazed at the interest that it has garnered in the financial community inspite of the rise of the social networking sites. Just goes to show the need and the dearth of company specific digital communities.

Digital corporate communities based on technology driven tools and services simply allows us to do what we have always been doing- engaging with associates and customers, in a much more efficient, easy, cost-effective and far reaching way. It is now very simple to engage with an almost unlimited number of people, overcoming all barriers of time, cost and place. Every industry can strive not just to be a part of this frenzied trend, but to leverage it as a part of what they are already doing, to do it better!

If studies are to be believed, the average time spent on the web per week is on the rise, and there isnt a better way to capture mindshare than enhance your web presence. So, if Google has captured the mindshare for search, the Bings and the Wolframalphas are trying their best to outclass it. The number of social networking and bookmarking sites are also testimony to the fact that companies seek to be all over the web so the demand for such sites will be there and new ones would keep coming even if you have Linkedin and Facebook and bookmarking majors like Digg and Delicious.

The bottomline is, if my experience in the months passed, understanding and learning the web is anything to go by, the web is the contemporary counterpart of physical existence. So all you professionals out there, if you don't know a thing or two about SEO, Offpage Optimization, Affiliate programs, Digital communities and so on, it's time you put your act together and enhance your web presence else you would be lagging behind in the rat race even before realizing it!
