Gingivitis is a disorder involving inflammation of the gums.

Gingivitis is caused by the long-term effects of plaque deposits.

Eventually these plaque deposits can cause harm and an unpleasant ordor.
if left untreated, gingivitis can lead to very serious consequences,

including the disconnection of gum tissue from teeth, and even tooth

breakage and tooth loss.

The cause is bacteria, which can turn into tartar and plaque buildup,

irritate your gums and lead to bleeding and receding gums. If you do not

cure gingivitis early, it can lead to a more serious gum condition

called periodontitis. This is a long-term infection that can eventually

cause loss of your teeth. Gingivitis generally doesn't hurt. You may

have it for years before you feel discomfort.

To adequately treat gingivitis, nutrients are needed to promote healing

and get the inflammation under control. If you want to treat gingivitis,

be sure to eat a well-balanced diet that will give your gums and teeth

necessary stimulation. Eating a variety of fresh fruit, leafy

vegetables, fish, meat, and grain breads daily is an important step to

treat gingivitis.

You should watch your mouth carefully for signs of gingivitis,

especially changes in gum color or appearance and tenderness. Knowing

the signs of gingivitis will help you catch the disease early, and

diligent oral hygiene can greatly reduce the effects of the disease.

--

Teeth Whitening Naturally

One of the latest dental habits to make waves has to do with teeth whitening. Understandably there are several means in which to achieve whiter and brighter teeth. Equally there are varying costs and also some minute risk factors connected with a few of the teeth whitening techniques.

If you are into attaining whiter teeth the natural way there are options you may not have even considered. Most of the natural whitening tips and techniques found to be effective take patience and time for results to appear. If you are patient and diligent there will be results.

When looking for natural teeth whitening products in the retail shops and health food stores you will find many varieties. Toothpaste with teeth whitening properties included in the ingredients or advertisement will be beneficial to your efforts for a whiter brighter smile. Some natural efforts for whiter teeth may take longer to achieve than the chemically based whiteners but the results will still be noticeable.

There are several common natural whiteners present in the natural teeth whiteners. These change over the course of years as newer more effective methods present themselves through research. Bamboo powder, calcium carbonate and silica are some of the ingredients you may find today in the natural teeth whitening products. Silica cleans and whitens teeth. Stains are removed with silica and there is no harsh abrasion involved. Abrasion can damage enamel.

One of the obvious ways to reduce staining of the teeth and promote healthy gums is by drinking lots of water. Drinking a lot of water steers you away from drinking fluids that are darker and tend to stain or discolor teeth. Coffee, tea, and especially dark colored soda's are among the top drinks that leave stains on teeth. An occasional beverage that leads to staining is not a problem. Constant consumption of these types of drink is not conducive to teeth whitening.

Cigarette or cigar smoking is bad for your over all health and clearly causes damage to organs and tissue that you cannot see with the naked eye. Cigar and cigarette smoking is also another deterrent from naturally white teeth.

--

Curing Bad Breath Bart

"Pee-ew! You smell like a skunk soaking in sardine nectar for a week."

OK, so I can be a little candid every now and then. It's not something I would say to Attila the Hun during a pre-battle pep rally. But it was not Attila the Hun standing in front of me. It was just my buddy Bart.

"Pee-ew! You have bad breath."

So when the phone rang that night, the last person I expected to greet me in a cheery voice was Bad Breath Bart. "Hey, Happy Guy. I'm feeling great," he said. "Want to guess why?"

"You just won the gold medal for the ten-meter turkey toss?"

"Nope," he replied. "But thanks for the tip. I'll start training for it tomorrow."

"OK, I give up. Why do you feel so great?"

"Because I discovered an easy way to cure bad breath," he declared. "Want to guess how?"

"You bought a book on stopping bad breath and you are following the instructions?"

"Sa-ay, that's a good idea," Bad Breath Bart said. "But that's not it. My plan is even simpler. I covered up my bad breath."

"Bart, that won't work. Since Julius Caesar first invaded Paris and declared 'Veni Vidi Vino', people have been trying to cover up their breath. But mint just is not strong enough."

Editor's note: I've already had my say on the great mint conspiracy in a previous column on toothpaste.

"Bingo!" he shouted. "Mint is too weak, so I found something stronger. Want to guess what?"

"You've been rinsing with five-week-old milk?"

"Nope."

"You've discovered that cologne is best taken internally?"

"Nope."

"You downed a bottle of vanilla extract, mistaking it for beer?"

"Nope."

This guessing game was giving me headaches and foot cramps. "I give up, Bart. What's your secret to curing bad breath?"

"Garlic," he declared.

"Garlic?"

"Garlic. Now nobody can smell my bad breath, because all they smell is garlic," he beamed.

"Garlic?"

"Of course, there are some side effects," Bad Breath Bart noted. "For instance, my pet vampire has run away. And this afternoon I blew a kiss to my wife, and she slammed the door on my face."

"Can I offer an alternative, Bart? Something that won't put your nose in a cast every time you get the irresistible urge to blow at your wife?"

"Sure."

"Try using some mouthwash with cetylpyridinium chloride in it. That always works for me."

"Wow. That's a mouthful," Bad Breath Bart exclaimed.

I was glad to have finally given Bad Breath Bart a mouthful that would actually help him cure his problem. I did not anticipate the call I would receive the very next evening.

"Hey, Happy Guy. Thanks for the tip," Bad Breath Bart said. "That cetlip... cettap... centapyr... That unpronounceable mouthwash ingredient is superb."

"Excellent!" I was thrilled that he had taken my advice and that it was working so well.

"Yeah. It really tastes great," he continued.

"Tastes great?"

"You bet. And so filling, too."

Suddenly I felt an ominous sensation closing in. "What do you mean by 'filling'?"

"After taking that cetilp... cettep... certip... that unpronounceable concoction, I don't feel hungry anymore," he explained.

"Bart, what did you put in that concoction?"

"Oh, the usual – ten scoops of ice cream, a cup of milk, a bag of chocolate chips, half a banana, some corn flakes, a wombat's ear and the juice out of the maraschino cherry jar," he responded.

"But that won't stop your bad breath."

"Oops. I also added that cetip... cetpe... certilp... that unpronounceable ingredient," he added. "It sure tasted good."

Just then, my wife entered the room. "Honey, I just made you one of your favorite banana-strawberry milkshakes," she said with a smile.

I looked at the glass she placed in my hand. I looked at it from the top. I looked at it from the bottom. I looked all around it.

"What are you looking for," she asked.

I knew she would not believe me. "Chocolate chips and corn flakes."

--
David Leonhardt is a freelance writer in eastern Ontario.
Tips for Sparkling White Teeth

There’s more to keeping you pearly whites precisely that than a bit of brushing and the odd visit to a dentist. Take a look at these dental dos and don’ts.

#1 Avoid Fizzy Drinks
Carbonated drinks (including the diet variety and sparkling water) can cause your teeth to look older than they really are. These drinks are so highly acidic that they can actually dissolve the upper layers of the tooth. They contain high amounts of phosphorus - a mineral that can leach calcium from your bones if you consume too much and some scientists believe they can weaken your jawbone, increasing the chance of losing teeth.

Some researchers believe calcium is first robbed not from your hips or spine but from your jaw, leading to tooth loss. We see a number of young people who have the jaws of much older people, because of poor dietary habits such as drinking soda, along with not getting enough calcium.

#2 Chew your Food
Foods that work on the teeth like detergents are foods that require chewing. Apples, celery and carrots clean teeth naturally and foods such a spinach, lettuce and broccoli prevent staining by creating a film on the teeth that acts like a barrier. Major strainers will take their toll on your smile sooner of later, so steer clear of tea, coffee, red wine, and highly pigmented foods such as cherries and blueberries anything in fact, that will stain a white shirt.

#3 Don’t take Drugs
Ecstasy causes jaw clenching in users. A study found that 60 per cent of ecstasy users examined had worn their teeth through the enamel and into the underlying dentine, compared with only 11 per cent of non-users. As for cocaine rubbed on gums, it restricts blood flow, traumatizes the tissue and inhibits nutrition of the gums. Remember gums keep teeth in place.

#4 Quit Smoking
Smoking causes staining of the teeth and bad breath and increases the risk of oral cancer and gum disease, as it constricts blood flow to the gums. In fact, some gum specialists feel it’s not worth providing advanced treatment for gum disease in smokers, as there is very little chance of improvement. Smoking one pack a day for 10 years can cause a 10 per cent loss of bone support. Long term studies reveal that most tooth loss in 19 to 40 year olds is associated with smoking more than 15 cigarettes a day.

#5 Beware Bleaching
A professionally applied whitening system will not damage teeth. But some over the counter bleaches are so acidic; they can cause surface loss and sensitivity.

#6 Stop Biting Nails
Habitual nail chewers damage more than their cuticles; they can damage their teeth, too. If you have weakened enamel, you end up with an exposed, dented, soft area in the center of the tooth. And that’s when the problem occurs. The denting is much softer than the enamel and if exposed to bad habits such as chewing nails, opening beer bottles, it will wear down. Often the middle part dissolves quicker than the outside and the brittle enamel is very prone to chipping, making the teeth look uneven and unattractive.

Quick Guide on Dental Braces

Medical Statistics say that in nearly 50 per cent of people, teeth are irregular, crooked or not aligned. With advances in the field of dentistry, particularly in the branch of orthodontics which deals with correction of irregularities in the teeth and jaws, the treatment of such teeth is not difficult. Straightening of irregular teeth in the past was limited to the use of removable plates with ugly looking steel wires and the treatment was almost always a compromised one and too lengthy and painful.

Modern techniques are simple and painless and the treatment can be carried out in individuals of all age groups starting right form the age of three to four years and as late as 30-40 years, though the earlier the treatment is carried out, the better it is.

These days, there are a number of choices available regarding the type of braces to be chosen. These are different techniques and braces available nowadays, including the new tooth colored invisible braces and visible metal braces. Newer types of braces are further divided into:

1. Ceramic braces
2. Invasalign braces
3. Lingual braces
4. Metal braces

Ceramic Braces: Ceramic braces are made of tooth colored composite materials. They are strong and generally don’t stain. Adults like to choose ceramic because they ‘blend in and match’ with the natural teeth and are less noticeable to outsiders than metal braces. These are the type of braces Tom Curise had. The advantages are that they are virtually invisible, more comfortable and irritate gums less than the metal braces, but are more expensive and may require some extra sittings.

Invasalign Braces: Great for people who do not have severe problems. The braces consist of strong plastic trays that are fabricated especially on individual basis. They are indeed invisible. One can get the teeth straightened without anyone seeing that one is wearing braces. Trays for treatment are computer fabricated by align technologies. They are absolutely invisible to the outsiders.

Lingual Braces: These are placed behind the teeth rather than the usual front portion of the teeth and are virtually invisible to others. Only few specially trained professional orthodontists carry out treatment with lingual braces.

Metal Braces: Used for traditional orthodontics treatment. These are very strong and can withstand most types of treatment. At first, they may irritate the gums, but after a few weeks, get settled. Though less expensive, these are more noticeable than other types.

And now few tips you should follow to get best out of whichever treatment you choose to take up:
1. Avoid fizzy drinks
2. Chew your food
3. Don’t take drugs
4. Quit smoking
5. Stay away from Bleaching
6. Stop Biting nails

--
Anna Brandy also writes on Yeast Infection.
On Finding Quality Cosmetic Dentists

On Finding Quality Cosmetic Dentists

Cosmetic dentistry has come up in a big way in the past few decades. Unlike what a lot of people still opine, cosmetic dental care is becoming quite popular with people from all walks of life. With really high end laser technology that is very successful in helping reduce risk of bacterial infection, preserving healthy tooth structure, and has in-built intelligence to discern tooth decay, the trip to the dentist today, can be made really quick and painless.

What exactly does cosmetic dental service have to offer?

Cosmetic dentistry offers a number of affordable dental care options with respect to mending crooked and chipped teeth, replacing missing teeth, gum lifts, applying porcelain laminate veneers and braces, whitening teeth, dental implants, and complete dental face- lifts to give you that beautiful, flawless smile. High end solutions like porcelain laminate veneers (mostly called just 'veneers') can be used to improve a wide variety of cosmetic dental problems. They can whiten stained or discolored teeth, close gaps between teeth, correct a crooked smile without the need for braces, repair chips and imperfections, and create a more attractive or youthful looking smile.

How to find a suitable dentist

Many dentists choose to provide a variety of procedures, while others focus on specific areas of treatment. Many times, cosmetic and restorative dentistry requires more than one dentist to achieve the best results. So, short listing suitable dentists who could provide you all the specific and related cosmetic dentistry support you need is a crucial part of the entire process.

The first and foremost requirement is to short-list at least 2-3 well- established cosmetic dentists. To begin with, it would be a good idea to try a dentist directory on the Internet. There are many reliable and very comprehensive online search directories like www.alexlist.org that can help you identify experienced dentists who could offer a very high quality of cosmetic dental service. Since every good dentist directory categorizes dentists according to cities, it should be fairly convenient to identify a few dentists in the city of your residence. Most of these search directories (including www.alexlist.org) are currently offering their services free of charge.

Another really recommended option is to ask your friends and acquaintances if they could suggest someone. It is definitely much easier and more convenient to have a first hand account of what the dentist is like, along with the kind of cosmetic dental service (support and facilities) he is likely to offer.

Once you have short-listed a couple of recommended dentists, try the following check list to help you make your decision easier:

1. Has the dentist taken advanced continuing education courses in current techniques?

2. Can you see before and after pictures and testimonial letters of people who have had similar treatment in the past?

3. Does the dentist have imaging or presentation devices to help demonstrate how the procedure is done, and what results might be expected?

4. Does the dentist seem open enough to answering your queries?

It does seem like quite a bit of work but frankly, your smile is precious and it surely pays to do spend some time and effort right at the start than suffer later. Maybe you can look at it as a long time benefit-- a ready reference for any future cosmetic dentistry related work. Moreover, the process should not take more than a couple of days of systematic and thorough searching.

Affordable cosmetic dentistry

Unlike what most people think, cosmetic dental care does not cost the Earth! Though the actual cost will depend on how much work you need to get done, the dentist you choose (experience, kind of facilities he offers, etc.), most common procedures are quite affordable. It would be a good idea to talk to your dentist who can give you more information on pricing and suggest the best procedure for you. Also, some cosmetic dental options are covered by insurance.

With the kind of advances cosmetic dental care has seen in the past decade, it is possible not only to provide a very high level of cosmetic dental service but also to make affordable dental care a reality for people from all walks of life. While finding affordable dental care is an important consideration, one needs to remember that cosmetic dental care is really an investment in you. After all, the kind of improved self-esteem and overall confidence a perfect smile and improved dental appearance can give you, is really priceless.

--

TMJ Alternative Treatments

I have suffered with TMJ for over a decade. My dentist first mentioned it to me before my son was born. He didn't offer any treatment, so I figured it was no big deal. All I knew about the subject was that my jaw "clicked". How bad could it be, right?
HOW WRONG I WAS!
Since then, I have become much better educated! I learned that my debilitating headaches weren't migranes, but a result of this TMJ! I learned what TMJ really is. First what do those letters stand for? TMJ actually stands for Temporo-Mandibular Joint. This is the joint between your upper and lower jaw bones. A disfuntion of this joint can cause extreme discomfort and irrepairable damage to the jaw itself.

What are some signs?

Clenching
Grinding
Popping sound while chewing
Headaches
Jaw pain
If you notice these signs, talk to your dentist! He may recommend the use of a Nightguard . Or they may make one specially designed to fit your mouth. This is helpful if you grind your teeth at night. They may also discuss seeing a chiropractor.

In extreme instances, such as mine, surgery may be discussed. The surgery involves breaking the jaw and resetting it. Your mouth is then wired shut for a few months to heal. I then discussed this option with my physician. We didn't like the success rates, so we opted to check out an Orthodontist.

Orthodontist, you may be saying? Aren't they the ones who put braces on teenagers? Well, yes, they are! And they are the ones who put braces on me at 32 years old! Apparently, braces are a viable solution to the issue of TMJ. And they have a very high success rate (in the 80% range). However, they are very costly. And even after submitting referrals and fighting with both my medical and dental insurance companies, I did have to pay out of pocket to the tune of $7000.

I just had the braces removed after 18 months. I now have a retainer. Was it worth it? Well, I will be brutally honest- Braces as an adult HURT ALOT! But, keep in mind, they were moving my JAW, not just my teeth, so the pain was expected. I do get many fewer headaches and the intensity isn't what it used to be. I do have some irrepairable damage, I mentioned earlier. My damage is in the effect of a dime sized hole I wore out on my jaw bone. Bone cannot be replaced, so it'll always be there.

But, all in all, YES- I do believe going the route of braces was worth the pain and expense in the long run.

If you have been diagnosed with TMJ, do your homework! Get ALL of your options. And do not wait, as I did for treatment!

I hope this has helped at least one fellow sufferrer!

--
I have suffered with TMJ for over 10 years. Finally after headaches would keep me down for days, I sought help. There was irrepairable damage at this point. Don't let this happen to you!

Collectible Treasures and Gifts Enter My Store

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Having Dental Problems? Its time to brush through the fundamentals of Dental Care

We often get to hear that eyes speak a lot about a person. They of course do! But what about teeth? I believe they contribute a lot in making or marring the personality of an individual. One glossy smile empowers you to win hearts very easily.

A smile flashed from a healthy set of teeth tends to attract and leave an impression. On the other hand, you may find bad breath and yellow teeth equally repulsive.
No other make-up effect can throw the same impact as clean pearly white teeth and fresh smelling breath.

Dental care is an integral part of hygienic and healthy living. Dentistry deals with dental care diagnosis, impediment, and management and curing of dental infections including gums, tooth decay, associated structures of mouth and flawed teeth. Considering dental care as a tooth whitening system is a safe and gentle way of curing discolorations and blemishes on teeth or enhancing and maintaining the natural color. Other than keeping your teeth in good condition, maintaining good oral health also builds self-confidence in overall appearance. Teeth cleaning appear more tempting if the result promises a brighter smile.

Several people are suffering from dental illness due to absolute idleness or lack of knowledge for adequate dental health. They fail to comprehend that teeth, gums and related mouth structures are extremely important for a sound health, physical appearance and overall well-being. Any dental condition, if not treated properly and in time, can lead to a bad situation. In fact, dental conditions are indicators of some other serious health problems, such as diabetes and HIV infection.

Following some simple techniques of personal hygiene can go a long way in preventing severe dental disorders in human beings.

1.Brushing your Teeth - You can enjoy FREE dental healthcare just by practicing the conventional way of brushing your teeth. Brushing teeth, twice a day, is a necessary and priority exercise for preventing tooth decomposition and gum ailments. However, it is also important to brush your teeth using the proper motion with your toothbrush.

2.Toothbrush Power - Your toothbrush is your key weapon to fight dental ailments. Remember to change your brush regularly and pay attention to form and size of toothbrush. Coarse bristles can pose extreme damage to your tooth enamel and injure your sensitive gums.

3.Submitting to Fluoride - Fluoride assists in protection from tooth decay. Using appropriate toothpaste containing fluoride is the best remedy for dental care.

4.Regular Check-up - Proper and in time diagnosis of dental problems can save you a lot of physical and monetary loss. Regular visits to your dentist can be one of the surest means to have perfect dental health. Experts recommend visiting your dentist’s office regularly every 6 months.

5.Flossing your teeth - Regular flossing post brushing is another simple way for preventing any gum disease. The accurate way to floss your teeth is to place the floss very gently amidst your teeth along the gum portion. Flossing discards the debris / plaque from the gum area of your teeth which cannot be reached and removed by your toothbrush. First time flossing may lead to slight bleeding, which will eventually cease once you start flossing your teeth regularly.

6.Good Balanced Diet - Eating a well nourished and balanced diet is another criterion for securing good dental health. Make sure that your everyday diet contains enough of calcium, iron and vitamins in proper quantity. You may even consume pill supplements of vitamin and calcium if your diet is not carrying enough proportion.

7.Mouthwash Backing - Always remember to use mouthwash daily if you are concerned about your oral health, but only after recommendation from your cosmetic dentist. Mouthwash is an excellent solution for maintaining excellent oral health as it keeps your mouth clean and fresh. Most dental specialists insist on the use of a fluoride-based mouthwash. Fluoride prevents and destroys bacteria responsible for causing plaque that leads to cavities and other gum diseases.

8.Dental Insurance - Dental care maintenance can be a costly affair. Therefore, acquiring dental insurance from a sound dental insurance company can mitigate the worries and hassles of otherwise expensive rate oral or dental care. Check for the dental insurance that covers the cost of dental treatment, from a regular dental health check to a severe or urgent situation.

Are you looking for a Dentist?

Today, people brew this dire need to look.
Just a reminder for students and parents that part of any back to school supply list should be a mouthguard for any child playing contact sports such as football, basketball, wrestling, soccer or any sport that poses a risk of injury to a child's smile.

A mouthguard is as essential as a helmet or padding for school sports. Bruises and bones can heal, but teeth cannot be replaced without a lot of cost and pain to the patient and the parents. Mouthguards are also helpful in preventing concussion as they absorb about 50% of the force from jaw related impacts, thus reducing the amount of trauma to the brain.

There are three types of mouth guards: the regular store bought mouth guard, the boil and bite mouthguard, and custom made mouthguards fitted by your dentist. A custom fitted mouthguard will provide the most comfortable fit and a dentist can make any alterations if needed. A mouthguard fitted by your dentist can also be customized to the demands of the sport or athlete.

When caring for a mouth guard it is recommended rinsing with cold water or an antiseptic mouth wash before and after each use. Cleaning the mouthguard with a toothbrush and toothpaste is also acceptable. It is also important to keep the mouthguard away from any high temperatures or hot water as it can warp out of shape and become unsafe and uncomfortalbe.

To ensure the mouthguard continues to do its job it is recommended the child bring it to any dental checkups to make sure it is still fitting properly and is in good condition. The American Dental Association recommends seeing a dentist about a mouthguard for the following sports: Acrobatics, Basketball, Boxing, Field Hockey, Football, Gymnastics, Martial Arts, Racquetball, Rugby, Softball, Volleyball and Wrestling.

Mouthguards are especially essential for kids who have any kind of dental appliances such as braces or retainers. Your investment in your child's smile should not end at the orthodontist's door. By adding a mouthguard to their back-to-school list you can be assured your child's smile is well protected.

Dr. Patric Cohen is a prominent Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentist Who has lectured and written extensivelyh on custom fitted mouth guards and their essential role in the prevention of dental injuries as they relate to sports.
There are various kinds of dental plans available around us. A dental plan encourages us to be curious about the health of our teeth. Otherwise, most of us neglect the care of our dental health. To prevent our self from dental problems regular dental checkup is requisite. However, it is true that for regular dental check-up, you will have to loosen the strings of your purse and it may seem extravagant. However, there is a solution to this, and that is choosing a good dental plan.

A dental plan can be helpful if it covers some conditions that should be there under a good dental plan. When you are on the scent of a good dental plan, you must be sure that your dentist is also going to participate in that particular dental plan. You should not give consent to a dental plan before knowing various pros and cons of that dental plan. You should also not trust a dental plan insurance company blindly.

With a good dental insurance plan, that insurance company is responsible to pay back to a dentist who is doing medical check up of your teeth. Actually, there are various kinds of dental plans to be found. Those dentists who participate in discount dental plan take lesser fees than charged by regular dental plans. Most of the dental plans charge a particular amount of fee from its customers. That amount of fee may vary from one plan to the other plan. There are two kinds of dental plans found. Some dental plans are offered to individuals while some dental plans are there for the whole the family. With family dental plans, you can have bigger discount than individual plans. Generally, a good dental plan covers following services: - as routine dental check ups and various dental treatments such as oral examination, fluoride treatment, teeth extraction, teeth filling and teeth cleaning. However, it is important to know that most of the dental plans do not often envelop major dental care treatments such as dental implants, restorative care, root canal treatments, braces, oral surgery etc.

Moreover, in such cases you have to bear whole of the expense. There is one another important fact to know that there are some dental plans that allow you or do not allow you to choose your own dentist. Often patients receive dental care from dentists mentioned in the plan. So, you must make sure before choosing a particular dental plan that whether the dentist mentioned in the plan practices in you area or not. Priority should be given to that dental plan that is accepted nationwide not only in a particular province. Before adopting a particular plan, you must ask yourself whether you want to adopt a monthly plan or an annual plan. Since, an annual plan is more cost beneficial than a monthly dental plan. That is why first priority should be given to an annual plan so that you may mow the maximum benefits from you dental plan by having regular dental check-ups.

--
Ajay singh is a high profile technical writer and health consultant and provide you latest information about health care dental plans and what you can do for your health.
Read more on http://www.plandental.org/dental-plans.php

Source: http://www.articletrader.com
