Beginner's Guide To Buying A Metal Detector http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/beginners-guide-to-buying-a-metal-detector.html http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/beginners-guide-to-buying-a-metal-detector.html Wed, 15 Oct 2008 00:00:00 -0500
You could also look for providers of discounted metal detectors. There are many reasons why you might be able to purchase a metal detector at a discounted price while not compromising quality. One of the most prominent reasons for discounted prices is warranty repairs that have been released back onto the market. These are metal detectors that were returned due to a manufacture defect. It has now been fixed and is literally the same as those just out of the box. But, it can’t be sold like new.

Another reason you might be able to purchase a metal detector at a lower than retail price is because it was some how blemished during the manufacture process. These blemishes are all cosmetic and do not affect the operation of the device. So, buying a discounted metal detector is not a bad thing. But, how do you choose which metal detector to buy. When looking to buy a metal detector that is right for you there are a few things you should keep in mind.

First, you need to ask yourself what you will be looking for and where you will be looking for it. There are certain types of metal detectors that are design to look for specific types of metal, like gold. But, the biggest difference here is where you would like to use the metal detector. With metal detectors it is all about terrain. If you buy a metal detector not designed for your terrain, it will work, but not as well as if it was desgined for that specific terrain. For instance you would not want to use a metal detector designed for use under water on the beach nor would you want to use a metal detector designed for use on the beech in hilly terrain.

Another item to consider is the duration, type and expense of the battery used. It could be the best metal detector in the world but if it only lasts for a half hour then it is worthless. Moreover, if you are having to change the batteries all of the time you are going to want to buy a good number of batteries. If those batteries are very expensive then that particular make of metal detector may not be worth it no matter how cheap it is. With batteries you also have to consider availability. So what if the batteries are cheap, if you can not get them where you live or are going they might as well be the expensive type.

Last but not least, you should consider weight and comfort. If the metal detector is too heavy or is uncomfortable to hold you will be less likely to use it. Well at least have fun using it.

Just make your choice wisely. Think about how and where you are going to use your metal detector. Think about how you are going to power it. Then you should be able to make a decent decision about which metal detector to buy.

how to make money with postcards http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/how-to-make-money-with-postcards.html http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/how-to-make-money-with-postcards.html Fri, 11 Jul 2008 00:00:00 -0500
First you will have to find someone willing to part with a large number of postcards, or a Lot. This could be a mixed lot or a lot of postcards dealing with a single subject such as realphoto, , Transportation, or anything that you have an interest in and feel that you could sell.

You could easily find this assortment of postcards on eBay. From there you can go to postcards and search through the lots. Find something you like and place a bid on it. If it has a buy it now price you can purchase the cards outright.

Once you have your cards you are ready to make money with postcards. Go through your cards and seperate the cards you think wil sell and the ones that may not sell quickly as a singular item. During this process you may come across cards that are your personal favorite, and just wish to keep. Go right ahead, now your a collector.

Now that you have seperated your cards into two groups (or three) you can start figuring out what to charge for your cards. Say you have a postcard of an old gas station. Go to eBay and look up postcards, then go to gas stattions and you will get an idea of what to charge for your card. Scan your card and insert it on eBay. See, that was a snap.

So now your wondering what to do with all of your leftover cards. Well, you just combine them in a lot a sell them as such. You can pretty much keep this wheel turning forever, and in the meantime create quite a nice personal collection of cards. I hope this helped. The main thing is to enjoy your new hobby.

Candid Photography and Good Manners http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/candid-photography-and-good-manners.html http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/candid-photography-and-good-manners.html Mon, 13 Apr 2009 01:33:20 -0500
This doesn't really apply of course if you're taking shots of inanimate objects. A tree is not likely to get offended if you shoot it at a moment when its branches look forlorn and sad - but a person might.

For example, you're prowling the backstreets of some Third World city, or even your own, trying to capture a mood of desolation or estrangement - don't ask me why, but people like shooting this kind of thing - and you get an old woman in your viewfinder who has obviously seen better days. Nevertheless, there's a certain grace in her pose, and a nobility in her expression, so you shoot.

Later you can zap the pix in P/Shop, give it a good color balance and your friends will admire it. You get that pleasure for your efforts - but what did your model get?

Back when I was first taking photos I caught sight of a one legged man on a crutch hobbling towards me along a city street. It was a striking image, so being a god with a Nikon I brazenly stepped out and took it. The subject got very upset - and I immediately saw his point: who wants to be immortalized looking your worst?

When I returned to the darkroom I threw the neg out and made a vow not to do that again. Should I have asked his permission first? That would not have solved the situation and he most certainly would have said no. The point was, why was I taking that shot in the first place? If I'd thought about it I would have taken a shot from the back and at least spared his feelings.

Sometimes you take a candid snap and the value of the shot is that the person is unaware of your interest. These pictures can be great and the effect would be spoiled by going up and announcing your intention beforehand. However, what you can do is once you've got your shot, approach the subject, let them know you'd like to take a photo and do the best job you can of taking a flattering picture of the person. They may never see it, but here, as in many things - it's the thought that counts.

Another variation, especially if you're in that same Third World country where the locals have probably been photographed every which way by thousands of tourists, is to carry some small denomination notes or coins in your pocket, and politely offer payment for the modeling work. This is usually appreciated and it's good for your conscience.

Some other examples: one time I did my own personal photo essay on a school. It wasn't practical to offer every student and teacher a print but I cut a CD of the best shots and presented it to the principal.

Another time, I shot a dog class and made some small prints of the ten best shots and gave them to the trainer to pass out at the next class.

All this comes under the heading of good manners, and good manners are always appreciated. Furthermore if you want or need to return and reshoot, you'll find yourself welcomed not resisted.

Try it.

Tips on Reducing the Cost of Camping Gear http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/tips-on-reducing-the-cost-of-camping-gear.html http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/tips-on-reducing-the-cost-of-camping-gear.html Tue, 05 May 2009 22:25:46 -0500
However, the majority of my friends have never even gone camping before. This is mostly because of their fear of not having enough gear or the right gear. They think that to have the complete set of gear they need to spend a lot of money and they are not willing to spend that much especially in the recession.

Good hiking boots cost around $200, clothing could cost you about $600, a reasonable down sleeping bag costs about $200, 4-season tents can cost $600, internal frame backpacks can cost up to $500 for a good one and $100 for trekking poles. This is just some of the equipment. You might need camp stoves, flashlight, crampons, gaiters, child carriers, lantern, hammock and more.

For a lot of people, this is a lot of money. Yet there are still a lot of people who don't have that much money to spare that enjoy hiking and camping with little problems. Manufacturers like to make you think that you need all this stuff and all the expensive features.

The truth is camping is about going back to basics. You don't need the state-of-the-art equipment. You can even find what you need in your own home or the local thrift store.

Check out the gear tips below that can really cut your costs:

- Down parkas are very expensive and they make you sweat when you hike. Using layers will keep you warm and you can adjust if it gets too hot by removing the layers. Avoid using cotton for layers as they absorb water and makes you wet. Use synthetics and wool. Synthetics wick away water and keeps you dry. Wool keeps you warm even when it's wet.

- For the waterproof outer shell you can use a windbreaker and make it waterproof by applying a bottle of waterproofer that will set you back a few dollars. You only need expensive parkas when you're going for an expedition under harsh conditions.

- Use a cheap camping tent or bivvy and treat them with a seam sealer. Do this before every camping trip. You can find cheap tents just about everywhere. Remember to check for tears. Unless you're backpacking, you don't really need an expensive tent.

- A lightweight down sleeping bag can cost you a lot of money. A zero degree synthetic sleeping bag should be good enough for the mountains in most cases. Use a chemical warmer and some layers of clothing to keep warm inside your sleeping bag. If you're not backpacking and weight is not an issue, you can even be without the sleeping bag. Just use whatever suitable bedding you have at home but make sure you insulate yourself from the ground.

- Blisters are your worst enemy when you're hiking so I don't recommend cheap hiking boots. However if you're just camping, you can wear just about any footwear as long as you're comfortable.

- There are still quite a few places where you're allowed to build campfires. This eliminates the need for camping stoves. If not, there are a lot of cheap and practical stoves out there. You can either buy it new or used or you even just borrow them.

- For trekking poles you can just use a strong enough stick. I've used it for a few years without any problems. Some people may argue that cutting out sticks from the forest is bad for the environment but the process making those expensive trekking poles takes an even bigger toll on the environment.

This list is pretty basic but covers the most common concerns people have told me about. Camping gear doesn't have to be overly expensive. You can and should use what you already have as much as possible.

How to Make a Warhammer 40K Space Marine Bunker http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/how-to-make-a-warhammer-40k-space-marine-bunker.html http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/how-to-make-a-warhammer-40k-space-marine-bunker.html Fri, 07 Mar 2008 00:00:00 -0600
Materials List
-22?x28? foam board
-utility knife
-fine grit sandpaper
-PVA glue (white glue)
-thin polystyrene (styrofoam)
PAINTS
-codex gray
-skull white
-chaos black
-textured paint (gray)

Step 1 Outlining and cutting

There’s a plenty of sizes that could be used when making a space marine bunker. For this reason I won’t give exact dimensions. It will be adequate to say that sides and roof top will be used. So start by outlining and cutting down 4 sides. Be sure to make the windows the same height as their bolt guns. The height of the walls should be close to double the height of a space marine. Assemble 2 walls longer than the others walls so it will look like a rectangular shape. Repeat this process again and pair the walls.

Step 2 Create wall with door

When creating a wall with a door, set up only one of the walls with a door. The inner wall will then become a good background for the door designs.

Step 3 Glue sides together

Attach all 8 sides together. Remember each wall is actually paired with 2 parts combined. This gives the bunker more permanence and the windows are deep set into the building.

Step 4 make roof
Create a roof out of thin polystyrene (styrofoam). Arch the edges with fine grit sandpaper. Try also to chip out some chunks to be like a beaten and battered bunker. It gives more interesting look. Keep the roof unfastened so you can put space marines inside. You may have thought this was an obvious suggestion, but you’d be surprised at the things that disregarded.

Step 5 Prime then paint
Paint the bunker in chaos black or acrylic black paint mixed with fine sand to produce a textured look. This appear like concrete and gives more design when dry brushing. Later, paint the bunker with codex gray. Once dry, dry brush with skull white and wait till it will dry.
A simple space marine bunker designed, cut, glued, and painted.

Inventive Miniature Barbie Doll Pieces: Organizational Points http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/inventive-miniature-barbie-doll-pieces-organizational-points.html http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/inventive-miniature-barbie-doll-pieces-organizational-points.html Tue, 13 Jan 2009 02:10:42 -0600
Designers might know about lighting, and colors, but only the great ones design for mood. The mood of the room is chosen by the expectations of those that do, or plan to use it. A great example is a play room where the sole purpose of the room is to have fun and enjoy oneself. Another example would be a bedroom, which is more personal, intimate, and is directly affected by the personality of the resident. Great dollhouses are no different. To tap into your mood settings, think about the purpose of the room, why it is their, and what designs, colors, furniture, would better suit that mood. As you increase your miniaturist talent with your own dollhouses people will notice the particular moods, and even though they can't quite put there finger on it, they will be impressed.

Using an Artists Color Wheel for your Benefit

Color will be the over ruling design medium for your dollhouse furniture and design choices. Everyone that has gone to high school art or taken any basic art school knows a little bit about the color wheel. The basis of the wheel is that some colors are similar to one another, and others have contrast. The colors right next to each other are called analogous colors, and offer slight similarities for color patterns, and those opposite offer the most contrast and pop. When starting your designing pick up a color wheel for your color selections, a little knowledge about color coordination will go a long way to help your design and flow capabilities.

Making your Miniature House Better: Floor Trim

If you are a true crafter you are constantly tweaking your creations. There are some great things that you can add to your house, and I just simply came across one that helped out a lot. I discovered the importance of having trim around your floor. The discovery is not entirely new, or my own, there are many places to get doll trim, but I found the cheapest is a very thin flat balsa wood. I painted them white, which went with all the walls in my dollhouse, and attached them to the floors throughout the house. My biggest discovery is when the trim hid most of the fine mistakes between the floor and the wall. Another great thing about the trim is that it covers the edges of the wallpaper and prevents fraying. This discovery truly was a small one, but I believe that it really added to my dollhouse.

Design Tricks: Apply a Great Wallpaper Pattern Yourself

Wallpaper is the world’s best invention, right up there with glue and nails. Not only will the walls have a cute and distinct pattern, but the job will be done in a fraction of the time. Begin your searching for the perfect wallpaper with a hobby or craft store, and try not to be too overwhelmed as there are thousands of choices out there. Because you are looking to cover a relatively small area, you should look at getting 1 or 2 square feet at a time. You can also print off your own wallpaper. If you have a computer and a semi decent printer simply make a style that you are comfortable and print out a couple sheets. Scrap booker's will have all the necessary materials for you as well, so if you know anyone or if you are a scrap booker yourself look at your collection of paper and I am sure that something will work. As you develop your mad wallpapering skills you will ad contrast, style, connectivitly and a perfect design to your dollhouse kit

Craft Robo vs Cricut http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/craft-robo-vs-cricut.html http://www.articletrader.com/home-and-family/hobbies/craft-robo-vs-cricut.html Sun, 01 Apr 2007 00:00:00 -0500
Both the Cricut and the Craft Robo are quality cutters that are fairly simple to use. The Cricut is a great machine that does not require a computer connection. Cartridges are used to cut a variety of shapes and letter styles and the machine features a carry handle for extra portability. The Craft Robo is more lightweight, but not as portable, because it requires the use of included software to create die cut embellishments.

The initial cost of the Cricut is generally a great deal less than the Craft Robo, but the Cricut also requires the purchase of at least one cartridge to actually function, while the Craft Robo includes everything you need to begin cutting. Each Cricut cartridge will produce a large selection of designs and there are different cartridges for letters and shapes. The Craft Robo will cut any design the user can create on their computer, meaning much more opportunity for creativity.

While the Craft Robo’s replacement parts are more expensive than Cricut’s, Craft Robo’s parts do last longer, making the costs about equal over long-term use. The Cricut features a paper saver function and the special function that sets Craft Robo apart from other cutters is the ability to print any image with a desktop printer and then cut the image outline with the Craft Robo.

Overall, the Cricut is much more user friendly with a simple cartridge, minimal keybord entry, and the press of a button. The Cricut is also a less expensive initial purchase and easier to bring along to crops or crafting workshops. For serious paper crafters with some knowledge of computers, the Craft Robo is a much better value over time. It is much more versatile because it is capable of precisely cutting any image and is not limited to only the fonts and images available through the manufacturer.

Richard Greenwood has tested both the Craft Roboand the Cricutmachines and has his own views on the outcome.

Dining rooms can add an air of sophistication—or charm—to any dollhouse home. Most dining rooms are quite formal, but hand-painted and rustic dining room sets have a flair and personality that’s all their own. Dining rooms are one of the best areas of your dollhouse for playing pretend—whether children are pretending to serve a meal to visitors or you are showing off an adorable tea set

Dollhouse Green Furniture

Have you ever thought of using green for your dollhouse furniture? Green dollhouse furniture is the colorful choice for many fun pieces of dollhouse furniture. We have found that it is the quirky pieces of furniture that we have loved the most, and green as quirky as it may be can really add to your dollhouse experience.

Dollhouse One Inch Furniture

Dollhouse scales tell you that the you are buying the right sized furniture for your dollhouse. On this website, all furniture items are on a 1 inch scale unless the title of the item says otherwise. The most popular scale for both furniture and dollhouses is the 1 inch scale.

The most frequently used scale for dollhouses and dollhouse furniture is the 1 inch (1:12) scale. Every inch of dollhouse furniture is equivalent to twelve inches of real furniture. For example, a dollhouse dresser that is 4 inches tall represents a 4 foot tall real dresser. There are other scales, but they are less popular and common

For example, a dollhouse tub 5 inches long is built to represent a 5 foot real tub. In other scales, such as half inch and quarter inch, less than an inch represents a foot of real furniture.

Dollhouse Furniture: Hand Painted

We ooh and aha over dollhouse furniture because it is immensely detailed. That is why hand painted furniture is so desired, it adds class, uniqueness, and style. This popular choice is not likely to fad with time and many generations will enjoy the quality and craftsmanship that when into a hand painted piece of dollhouse furniture.

Office and Library Dollhouse Furniture

Whether your dollhouse is old-fashioned or ultra-modern, elegantly Victorian or enchantingly down-to-earth, the library or office really showcases the era you are emulating. This is also a room in which just a few accessories can go a long way: a sophisticated globe or a few revered books, for example. This room is an easy way to make your dollhouse look a little classier.

Bedroom Dollhouse Furniture

Every dollhouse needs a dollhouse bedroom. The options are tremendous, since there are so many designs, styles, furniture pieces, and colors available. Each set has its own one-of-a-kind features, such as distinctive carving designs and specially tailored bedding.

Bathroom Dollhouse Furniture

Most dollhouse bathroom kits are pretty simple: they include a tub, a toilet, a sink, and sometimes a mirror. Surprisingly, these few items come in so many patterns, materials, and colors that your dollhouse bathroom can have a personality all its own. A few well-placed accessories, such as a towel closet or a tube of toothpaste and a hairbrush, will go a long way to add personality to your dollhouse bathroom.
