Of all the flowers that one could grow in their garden, roses might be the most the most universally beloved and cherished. Unfortunately, not everyone lives in a location where having a garden or even growing live flowers is an option. Nary will an apartment let its occupants plant their own garden. How are these space-deprived individuals, then, supposed to experience the wonder of beauty of their own roses in an indoor setting? It's a lot easier then you might think thanks to grow lights.

As the name might suggest, grow lights are specialized lights which allow plants to grow indoors. While it may seem like a strange concept, grow lights are utilized in many different areas where outdoor light is not always available. For example, Chase Field in Phoenix, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team, utilizes grow lights to make sure that all parts of the grass field gets equal amounts of healthy light throughout the day. This is important because due to the roof casting shadows on the field at almost all times, not all of the grass gets an ample amount of light through the day. Many other stadiums around the world use grow lights to make sure the grass looks healthy every time the team hits the field.

On a smaller level, grow lights can work for your growing needs if you need healthy, natural light for an indoor gardening project. If you're a fan of the hit animated TV series "King of The Hill" you've undoubtedly seem the episode where Bobby Hill hides the fact that he's growing competitive roses in his bedroom closet. He finds that even without natural sunlight (his dad wouldn't let him grow flowers in the garden) he is able to grow beautiful roses with grow lights.

While it might be a cartoon, there is nothing stopping you from trying the same thing at home. Essentially all roses need the same thing: nutrient rich soil, water and light. If a rose can get light from a grow light, as long as it gets the same vital nutrients for the soil and plenty of water it will grow just as well indoors.

The key to growing any flower to its full potential is knowing what you are doing. Besides reading the directions, make sure you check websites or books to find out what a rose needs to grow. Better yet, talk to a professional at a specialty flower shop; he'll give you keen insights that others might not give you. You also have to make sure your using the correct wattage bulb on your grow lights. Different flowers need different types of light, so make sure you know what you're giving your plant before you start growing it.

If you take care and take your time you'll be sure to grow great roses. The key is knowing what your doing and it's okay to try a little trial and error. By the end of the process you'll have some great roses to show off at your next get together.

--
Author Kimberly Green has used grow lights with great success!

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

She was a friend of a friend of a friend. She was a sole parent, living in a tidy looking suburban house in a rural town. I'd been introduced to her at a gathering of friends a week before and we discovered we lived only a mile from each other, and for some reason the conversation turned to gardening. Her front lawn was manageable I remember her saying, but the back was overgrown and the tool she'd bought just wasn't up to the job. So I offered to lend her mine.

My strimmer was a year old and very versatile with regard to what it could quite thoroughly cut away from the thickest grass to nettles and brambles. Her's was, by her account, a bit weak and just about able to cut a little grass round the edges of the lawn, which as I found was barely visible thanks to the vegetation that had sprung up where nicely cut grass should have been.

So I set out on a Sunday morning carrying the strimmer a mile up a quiet road to her house. The day felt fresh, and the sunrays lent a great, steady green to the foliage swaying in the late spring breeze.

Her house, from the outside, looked immaculate. I knocked on the door, to be greeted by an array of children, and what looked like a fairly chaotic household. She made me a cup of tea first, before going on to list a load of issues she had with the waste management system of the town, giving examples of extortionate prices for collecting garden waste.

I nodded, not necessarily in agreement, but to indicate agreement and a need to get on with the job for I had a whole load of other things to do that day and I had hoped this would be a five minute job.

As it happened it was more of an hour job. But the href=http://www.blackanddecker.co.uk/gardentools/productoverview/hierarchy/2210/>strimmer was up to it. It cut away everything that she didn't want to be there. I offered afterwards to get my lawnmower for the grass, but this was an offer I didn't whole-heartedly want to her to take up - more an act of courtesy. Thankfully she said she had her own, with a trace of defensiveness as if I was implying she had no idea about garden tools.

I felt a bit embarrassed because I hadn't considered she might just have wanted to save a bit of cash by getting a second hand, and rather inadequate strimmer. She showed it to me in the garden shed. It was evidence enough that she really did need to think about getting a quality tool.

A cup of tea later and I was on my way. It's odd sometimes how for little reason at all apart from human kindness that you offer to help a half-known stranger to do some garden work. Maybe I just like drinking tea.

--
Sarah Maple is writing about power tools and garden tools.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

When constructing your wooden shed, you have a variety of woods from which to choose. Each type of wood has its advantages and disadvantages. The appropriate wood for your garden shed may be dependent upon your location, use for the shed and budget. One type of wood that you might want to consider is cedar. There are many reasons why cedar makes a good building material for wooden sheds.

Cedar naturally serves to repel insects. Oils within the wood serve as repellents to insects. Also, this oil prevents the growth of fungus that can cause wood to rot. The natural cedar oils works as a preservative to protect the wood. Cedar is often used to construct other structures that might be utilized in conditions with high moisture. Many hot tubs and saunas are made with cedar.

When constructing your garden shed, you want a hard wood. After all, the more durable the wood, the longer your wooden shed will last. Cedar is such a wood. It is comprised of fibers that are straight making it quite strong. Cedar also is a good choice if you live in an area that has inclement weather as it will endure. Cedar has long been used in the construction of other outdoor buildings for this exact reason.

Cedar should be a serious consideration for constructing your wooden shed for other aesthetic reasons. Cedar wood has a beautiful colouring that many find attractive. Many people find they love the look of the natural wood and do not need to paint it. They would simply need to apply protectants. You may also choose to stain the cedar wood. It will absorb the stain quite nicely. No dealing with peeling paint and the like if you choose unpainted cedar to construction your wooden shed. Many find the rustic and natural look of cedar is a perfect complement to the natural surroundings in which they will be constructing their wooden shed. Many people like cedar as well because it simply has an appealing smell to them. Cedar wood can also be quite economical than some other types of woods.

--
Stephen Jobbs
York Timber Products

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Vines for Container Gardens

Now is the time to think about planning your garden decor for next year - there are areas in our gardens, decks and patios that could handle a little bit of tweaking. Vines in containers are a wonderful way to add height to your garden planter combinations - they can be used as background on the trellis for other plants as well.

In containers or outdoor planters, there area number of both annual and perennial vines that are suitable. Consider the Potato Vine (Solanum jasminoides), all of the Morning Glories (Ipomoea supp.), Cup and saucer vine, Cathedral bells (Cobaea scandens), and of course the Sweet Pea and Hyacinth beans. They all grow best in full sun and rich, well-drained, evenly moist soil. Use these vines in a container that will be set against a wall and install a sturdy trellis toward the back of the pot. If the container or planter is to be viewed from all sides, then set the trellis in the center of the pot.

Plant your vine in the large planter or container and then train the main stems of the vines to run up the trellis and let some of the other stems wander among the other plants and spill over the sides. Pinch the stem tips during the season to increase branching on these wandering trailers. You may wish to add colorful annuals to complete the combination. The effect is lovely and creates a feeling of fullness and abundance around the pot.

Containers planted with just one vine or a combination of vines also make very striking specimens. One effective way to create this effect is to select a pillar or obelisk type of trellis large enough for the legs of the trellis to extend nearly to the edges of the container, and then plant the vines. Set the planters with the specimen vines toward the back of a grouping of combinations that will not grow as high or display them alone in a prominent place. Create a focal point with your combinations. They are also striking when set as a pair to mark an entrance or portal.

Just a short note on combining vines in your planters. Planting two or more vines together can create a wonderful effect. Plant your annual vines near the established perennial ones. For example, if your Dutchman's pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) is well established on your porch or deck area, plant scarlet runner beans in a planter near its base each Spring. Scarlet runner beans attract hummingbirds and add colorful flowers and fruit. The vines of the two plants complement each other - the flowers from the beans add interest and color against a wonderful green background. What better way to add color and texture to your combination. Here again, your planters and containers can be moved around where you see a spot that could use some interest or fill in a blank spot.

Annual vines provide an interesting combination on a trellis for your home and garden. Plant a Balloon vine (Love-in-a-puff) with hyacinth beans. The lacy leaves of the Balloon vine also go well with morning glories. Be creative, try new combinations each year and see what works best for you and your garden, deck and patio landscape.

--
Marion Stewart is an avid gardener. In her continued research she has found some spectacular fine quality resin planters and garden containers and now offers them in numerous colors, sizes and styles. Find your best planter at the GardenPlanterStore.com

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Perfect Topiaries in Beautiful Garden Pots

Whether you would like to add beauty to your deck, patio or landscape, topiaries create elegance and are perfect for any garden. Create a focal point in your garden herb collection with potted herb topiary at the kitchen door.

Consider growing topiary to add height and a formal touch to your container garden or simply create fun design for a conversation piece. Topiaries are made by clipping plants into a great variety of forms - by tradition, they can be either geometric shape or animal figures. Wire forms have made it very easy to style topiaries into various shapes and sizes.

The most popular choice for covering the wire forms is ivy - there are English Ivy, Variegated Algerian Ivy and Swedish Ivy. Look for cultivars that feature interesting, variegated or deeply cut leaves. Try creating a topiary that features two different ivies with contrasting shapes and colors. There are a great many choices for your wire-form topiaries such as Creeping fig, Jasmines, Purple bell vine and Trailing abutilon. To train a plant to a form, simply insert the form in the pot or container, fasten the stems to whatever part of the form you want to cover. Use coated wire of soft string ties to secure the plant's stems to the form as they grow.

Most suitable for container gardens is the classic form of topiary - pruned cones or spheres of foliage. What is required, however, is a beautiful pot or planter to show off your handy work. For balance, usually the container is similar in size to the mature head of the topiary's foliage. This green sculpture is the standard, a plant that has been trained so that it has a single, bare stem topped by a dense, rounded, leafy top. Training a standard takes a bit of patience, however, you can begin with one already started in your garden center or nursery. Roses as well as herbs such as common myrtle, sweet bay and rosemary are traditional plants for standards. Others may be Flowering maples, Scented geraniums, Lantana and Coleus. Small leaved evergreen plants are most suitable for topiary training as well.

To create a standard, train a single-stemmed plant up a long stake, then trim the tip of the plan to form a rough ball on top of the stem. Make sure the stem is not tied too tightly to the stake or the ties can cut off the supply of water and nutrients to the top of the plant. As the main stem grows, gradually remove any side branches started at the base of the plant. Once the main stem has reached the desired height, pinch the tips of the branches at the top regularly to encourage a full rounded ball of foliage.

Care for topiaries the same way you would regular plants of the same type. The only extra step you need to do is trim the plant regularly to maintain the shape. Fast growing plants may need trimming every few weeks to keep their shape - slower growing species may not need clipping once or twice a year.

It's easy to buy ready-trained topiary, but it's fun and satisfying to make your own.

--
Marion Stewart is an avid gardener.
Do I Need a Heater for My Aquarium

A heater is a device that heats the aquarium water to suit the natural requirements of a fish. If you are wondering "do I need a heater for my aquarium" then it is important for you to know why a heater is required, and what are the types of heaters that you may require for your aquarium.

Both freshwater aquariums and saltwater aquariums can be classified into tropical water aquariums and cold water aquariums. If you own either a freshwater tropical aquarium or a saltwater tropical aquarium then you will require a heater for your aquarium. Tropical aquariums consist of fish that are from tropical areas such as Africa, America and Asia. These fish cannot live in water that is below 74 degree Fahrenheit and in order to help them survive winters, heaters are required. Coldwater aquariums do not require artificial heating unless the temperature of the water goes below 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Aquarium heaters that are available online and in the market are of two kinds mainly being heaters with and without thermostats. Heaters without thermostats are the cheaper heaters and are not recommended for beginners since these heaters have to be manually turned off. If the heater is left on for an extended period of time without monitoring the water temperature then the water can get too hot and kill the fish. Heaters with thermostats are sophisticated heaters that have a thermostat that automatically turns off the heat when the temperature reaches a set degree. The heater then restarts when the temperature drops below the desired temperature and the cycle of heating and cooling continues. Heaters with thermostat are generally available with an in built thermometer and if you are planning to buy a manual heater then it is recommended to buy a timer device with the heater.

Discus and other delicate fish often get burnt if they go too close to the heater and certain fish like large Cichlids or Pacus are known to break heaters which can cause casualties due to electrical leakage in the water. Heater guards or heater covers provide protection from burns and casualties and are highly recommended if you have submersible or gravel heaters.

It is always recommended to have two heaters that split up the required wattage since this prevents problems in case one heater gets spoilt as the second heater will still manage to heat the water. If you have just one heater then a back up heater is highly recommended in case there are any problems with the original heater.

--
The author of this article knows all about the Boston Aquafarms.
