10 Reasons Corrosion Inhibitors Are Important

Submitted by mjjames1

Corrosion inhibitors are found in many different industries, and are vital to stop corrosion in many different kinds of products.

Corrosion inhibitors are designed to slow down the rate of corrosion or to stoop corrosion altogether. They are normally chemicals added to liquids or gases to prevent the fluid or gas from corroding the metal that it touches.

Here are 10 examples of where Corrosion Inhibitors can be found.

1. Central Heating Systems
Central Heating Systems contain Corrosion Inhibitors so that the water doesn’t rust the pipes and radiators. If Corrosion Inhibitors were not added, then the metal pipes and radiators would wear out much more quickly, and need replacing more frequently.

2. Domestic and industrial lubricants
Lubricants for bikes, garden tools, and factory machinery are just some of the lubricants that need Corrosion Inhibitors so that the metal they are lubricating is protected against wear and tear, and rust.

3. Vehicle Fluids
Brake fluids need Corrosion Inhibitors so that the brakes work efficiently, and last longer. Cooling systems such as those in cars also need to be free from corrosion so that the cooling system works properly and efficiently, and that vehicle does not overheat.

4. Vehicle Oils
Vehicles have many moving parts, and a lot of these parts need lubricating with oil, to keep the parts moving and to reduce wear and tear. Corrosion Inhibitors help to ensure that the parts work well, and make the components last longer.

5. Fuels
Petrol, Diesel and the even renewable fuels such as biofuels need to have Corrosion Inhibitors added to them, so that the engine will stay lubricated and perform as expected without rusting.

6. Structures
Structures such as pipelines that carry liquids or gases need to be resistant to the wear and tear that the liquid or gas they carry can cause. These pipelines and other structures are quite often in remote, or hard to access places, and so they need to be resilient and last a long time.

7. Storage Tanks
Storage tanks, such as those at oil refineries, may deal with products of varying quality or different origins. The liquids have to have Corrosion Inhibitors added so that the liquid won’t rot the storage tank.

8. Building Products
Corrosion Inhibitors are used in building materials and in the construction industry. They are vital where the structure will be exposed to the elements, and affected by water, such as bridges.

9. Paints
Corrosion Inhibitors are added to paints so that the metal being painted doesn’t rust or rot. Vehicles, metal structures including bridges, and much more needs to be protected against the damage that could be caused by water, rain, or any other liquid.
10. Water Systems
Any type of water system, such as heating or cooling, water treatment, or storage will require Corrosion Inhibitors so that the water does not rust the pipes or storage tanks or the components of the water system.

Now that you know where Corrosion Inhibitors are found, and how important they are, why not find out which are the best for your needs?
