Contraceptives for Men : Future of Male Contraception Conference 2007

Submitted by Superkevbo

There are numerous forms of contraceptives for women. To identify some, there are injections, female condoms, sponges, intrauterine devices, birth control pills and birth control patches. Women are sometimes given the sole burden and responsibility when carrying out a natural birth control method, which is based on the fertility period around the time of menstruation.

Societal norms have evolved over time, with people saying it is unfair that men do not have equal responsibilities for taking contraceptives. A clear proof and indication would be the lack of sufficient and more options in the use of contraceptives.

To date, there are only two forms of contraceptives available for men. One is vasectomy and the other one is the use of condoms. Vasectomy is the process wherein the man would be permanently prevented from impregnating women. Through this surgical procedure, the male testicles would be prevented from secreting and releasing sperm cells. There is nothing to worry about the scalpel procedure because the process is found not to affect the male sexual performance and virility.

When contraceptives for men are being talked about, condoms would almost always top the charts. Condoms are so far the most popular and widely used forms of contraceptives used by men. The item is easily used and is very much accessible across the market. men can easily buy these contraceptives from the grocery stalls and the different retailers.

Researchers assert and attest that men should have many other choices for contraceptives. In September 2007, about 140 representatives from government and private sectors from all across the world convened in Seattle to discuss the latest breakthroughs and developments over contraceptives for men. In the convention, the group would deliberate and look on proposals and technologies that are aimed at broadening the choices for contraceptives among men.

Feminist groups are starting to raise calls for male contraceptives. According to representatives of such groups, females are given the sole responsibility in preventing unwanted pregnancies. They added that usually, female contraceptives are not without any side effects to the body.

For example, birth control pills as contraceptives are found to lead to obesity or weight gain among women. At times, there would also be possible hormonal changes, which affect the moods and emotions of women. Often, unwanted pregnancies also occur when women forget to regularly take their birth control pills for days.

For men, condoms are and will continue to be the easiest and safest form of contraceptives. Aside from easy access, condoms are also very logical and easy to use. They are now attractively packaged and marketed so that consumers can find them more easily and better. Such contraceptives are also less costly compared to other forms of birth control methods and tools.

As people and societies brace to gear up for the future, it is expected that both men and women would have better choices when it comes to contraceptives. With the rapid spread of sexually transmitted diseases, it would also be helpful if people would be more aware and more open about different strategies and measures to help make sex more safe, and thus enjoyable.
