Brief historical review of the Colombian emeralds

Emeralds have a fairly old historic home, experts do not know for sure where they come from many of the emeralds belonging to the great treasure of antiquity. This is especially true for a type of gems with which Indian merchants traded around the world since the seventeenth century.

It was thought that the mines of Egypt, operated by the pharaohs between
3000 and 1500 BC, and those of Habachtal in Austria, discovered by the Celts, were the only sources of emeralds in the ancient world until 1545, when the Spanish conquistadors took possession of the Colombian mines.
