Distance Learning The First 300 Years

The concept of distance learning isn't new. In fact, the record of a distance learning opportunity dates back to the early 1700's. The student who participants in a distance learning is not siting in a traditional classroom setting. He can be found learning at his own pace most likely at home or at the library. Fast forward to modern day and distance learning now includes online education. A student can sit home and gain an online bachelor degree that is equivalent to a student sitting in a traditional class setting.

The explosion of the Internet has made online learning possible. And with computers becoming as common as having a television in the household, many people are logging on to continue school something that might not be possible for them because of family constraints. Distance learning may still involve reading the materials from a book but test are generally taken online. This delivers the results of said test much faster than mailing it in to have it graded.

The benefits of online education or distance learning are plentiful. Convenience might be the number one benefit as you can plug in to your class at anytime. A mom with small children no longer has to postpone her education until they are old enough to fend for themselves. With a computer and Internet service, she can log on at all times during the day or night. The member of the older generation that might of dropped out of school for various reasons, can now take classes while she sits in her easy chair. The working class benefit greatly also because they don't have to leave work tired to make it to a night class. With online learning they can fit their schooling around their work schedule.

Cost is another factor that makes distance learning favorable. Although some types of distance learning may be a bit more expensive depending on the school, overall the cost is reduced. As schools begin to adapt to the demand for online learning, these institutions see a reduced overhead in terms of expenses because the class is virtual. The need for classrooms, lights, air conditioning or heat isn't necessary. Thus, this savings is reflected in the cost. Moreover, cost for parking, gas and even the need for transportation is eliminated for the student. There continues to be the opportunity to receive financial aid, grants and scholarships just as the traditional schooling method for students needing assistance.

Whether you are considering going back to finish school or to continue school, getting an online bachelor degree has never been easier. There are so many schools from which to choose. There are also a wide variety of course work to choose from. You are bound to find the right course of study for your needs. As a rule, selecting an accredited online education course of study is best. You want to make sure that your hard work isn't in vain. When a school is accredited it means that your degree is recognized. Be ware of the schools that are not.
