Forensic nursing is an emerging branch of criminal investigation. It integrates medical knowledge with forensic science to produce this new field of study and investigation. Thanks to a lot of media support, forensic nursing has gained a lot of popularity. More and more students now want to pursue forensic nursing education. Forensic nursing is not just a challenging job for the intelligent minds; it is also a high paying job. An increase in public awareness on how forensic nursing can be used to provide medical, psychiatric and legal aid to the victims as well as the accused and how it has helped solve crimes, has been seen in the recent years. There is a huge demand for trained and educated forensic nurses today. All students who wish to try forensic nursing as a career can get themselves enrolled at any one of the many universities and schools that offer courses in forensic nursing today.

Almost all major schools and universities provide forensic nursing education. There are several types of courses like certificate courses and degree courses. In degree courses you can go for a graduate degree or even a master’s degree. It all depends on how much time can you devote to educating yourself on forensic nursing. There are various fields of specialization as well. Some of these are:

1. Emergency Room Nursing
2. SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner)
3. Medical Legal Consultant.
4. Medical Examiner’s office.
5. Law enforcement teams.
6. Evidence Collection trainer.

The same course may be offered under different names in different universities. You must keep in mind what career specialization you want and go for that course which offers it to you. A person looking to get enrolled in a forensic nursing course should have proper academic education and a nursing degree.

Forensic nursing education teaches students how to deal with victims and provide them the necessary care. They are taught the basics of human brain and memory systems and how suffering and trauma impacts them. Students learn to deal with victims of sexual abuse or domestic violence. They learn how to recognize and collect evidence without spoiling it. They are also taught various other aspects of forensic science like diagnosing and investigating for clues. Students also learn to give psychiatric treatment to criminals. These are however provided by different courses so it is up to you to choose what you want to do.

Some employers reimburse educational fees while some provide scholarships. You must find out what is the most beneficial for you. Also look in carefully how much your employer actually wants to invest in you. There may be an upper limit. There are also several online programs available. If time or commutation is a problem for you then you can opt for any of these online programs that give you a degree in forensic nursing. Forensic nursing is an upcoming career. It is hugely in demand. The salaries are also good. Depending on your abilities you can earn a lot. If the prospect or becoming a forensic nurse attracts you go for a forensic nursing education course as soon as you can.
