The insulation helps keep water warmer longer thereby reducing the amount of energy needed to continually warm the water. For additional protection you can wrap hot water pipes leading to the tank with foam insulation and help keep water in the pipes warm.

3. Install a low flow shower head. Low flow shower heads conserve and use 25 to 50% less hot water than regular shower heads.

The cost of using a standard heater is only a part of your energy consumption but can be a sizable part. Any tips that save energy and reduce kilowatt use and money is a great idea for both your finances and the environment. Both are worthy causes.
