Applying save energy tips for a standard Hot Water Heater can cost less, and help the environment, both valuable benefits. People usually think about other electrical appliances for their energy saving potential before they think about this appliance. The fact is a standard Heater can consume a lot of kilowatts and account for a large percentage of the utility bill. Although newer on-demand or tank-less heaters are more efficient most homes still have standard units that use more kilowatts. In general most people don't mind applying energy saving tips, if it cost less, protects the environment and not too inconvenient.

Here are 3 save energy tips you can apply to help reduce cost without taking cold showers:

1. Lower the temperature down from 140 to 120 degrees. Not only will this lower your utility use but also help extend the life of your water heater.

2. Install an insulated jacket around your water heater being careful not to cover the top, bottom, thermostat or burner compartment. The insulation helps keep water warmer longer thereby reducing the amount of energy needed to continually warm the water. For additional protection you can wrap hot water pipes leading to the tank with foam insulation and help keep water in the pipes warm.

3. Install a low flow shower head. Low flow shower heads conserve and use 25 to 50% less hot water than regular shower heads.

The cost of using a standard heater is only a part of your energy consumption but can be a sizable part. Any tips that save energy and reduce kilowatt use and money is a great idea for both your finances and the environment. Both are worthy causes.

I've always been interested in reducing the cost of my utilities and I like the benefit of reducing impact on the environment. I recently found a valuable resource the reveals specific practical steps you can take to reduce monthly electric bills. (This is NOT about just changing a few light bulbs.)
