Natural Antimicrobial Defence - Protein LysozymeSubmitted by Vasilko Bykov Sun, 8 Feb 2009
Lysozyme protects us from the any bacterial infection. It is 129 aminoacid residues enzyme that attacks the cell walls made of carbohydrate chains of bacteria. Bacteria build a tough skin of carbohydrate chains, linked by short peptide chains , that protect membrane against the cells high osmotic pressure. Lysozyme hydrolyse these carbohydrate chains, destroying the structural integrity of the cell wall. The bacteria collapse under their own internal osmotic pressure. This catalytic activity is non-specifically targeted to the sugars in bacterial membrane and related with general non-specific organism protection .
Lysozyme, also known as Muramidase or Globulin G was discovered by Alexander Fleming during a deliberate search for medical antibiotics. Over a period of years , he try everything to bacterial cultures , looking for anything that would slow their growth. He discovered lysozyme by chance. One day , when he had fly , he added a big drop of mucus to the bacterial culture and , much to his surprise, it killed the bacteria. He had discovered one of our own natural antibacterial protection. It can be used topically, but cannot rid the entire body of disease, because it is can be killed by antibody protection . Protein lysozyme defends all open areas subjected to high bacterial grows . In our blog you can find lysozyme pictured from hen egg whites, where it protect the proteins that will nourish the developing chick. Lysozyme was the first enzyme ever to have its structure solved . Human tears contain lysozyme to protect infection of our exposed surfaces. Our blood is the worst place to have bacteria grow, as they would be delivered to all corners of the body. In the blood, lysozyme defend together along with the more powerful methods employed by the immune system. Researches shows that lysozyme from egg white can stop HIV entering into human body , which mean that lysozyme have some reasonable anti-HIV activity. Unfortunately there is no way to use lysozyme against HIV virus which already infect human body. The presence of lysozyme significantly reduce chances to have infection during contacts with infected substances. About the Author
