Driving Yourself To DistractionSubmitted by Laurel Sun, 14 Sep 2008
People do the most interesting things when they are driving - things that are not particularly compatible with being behind the wheel of a car. They put on make-up, talk on cell phones, hunt for things in briefcases or purses, and eat Big Macs. I recently saw a man reading a book while he was driving - actually holding it in one hand and periodically glancing up as he motored along the highway.
Hopefully you don't make it a practice to engage in too many distractions while driving. Chances are in other areas of your life, you do let yourself get distracted from the task at hand. We all have a tendency to take our eye off of the thing that needs our focus and give our attention to something else. What are you doing when you should be doing something else? Now I'm not usually a big fan of shoulds. They are typically someone else's agenda for us or our own guilt in action. Sometimes though, "should" is really your wiser self tapping you on the head about something you're neglecting. In any moment there are some choices that serve us better than other ones. You are the best judge of what those are for you. Routinely though we put off things that we really should take care of in favour of some other activity - like choosing couch time instead of exercise, surfing the internet instead of working on a project, washing the car instead of doing taxes. How you decide to procrastinate is purely an individual choice. The task one person avoids doing, another uses to avoid something else. I know someone who will clean house rather than attend to some other important activity. I bet there are lots of people who will choose anything to avoid housekeeping. Usually after you've procrastinated for a while, you feel irritated with yourself for having wasted time and you are now really under pressure to get something done. The double whammy - not only are you behind, you're feeling pretty annoyed too. Sound familiar? Next time you are thinking about procrastinating, instead of driving yourself to distraction decide to drive home the idea of being in choice. Ask yourself: What choice will serve me best? Sometimes that simple question is enough to distract you from procrastinating. Sometimes not. Either way, be content with what you are choosing in the moment. You can always choose again.
