Leading a team with a common Goal can do wonders for your business!

Team work is talked about in many a business book and aligning a team with an organizational goal can produce unbeatable results. However why is team work so important and why does it make a big difference in performance.

These simple principles I am about to share with you are principles that make a difference when respected and applied! The lack of these principles causes organizations to fail and others to prosper. Every leader of teams should apply these and prosper!
1. None of us, is as smart as all of us. Humility in a team and allowing people to bring in their different skills to the table will allow any group to grow. This is provided that everyone realizes that each has different abilities! A good leader of teams realizes that he does not have all the necessary skills, and brings out the best skills in everyone. Even those shy enough to just come out and show of their talents.
2. When teams work together towards a common goal that is higher than themselves, there is a motivation, a commitment to each other and to an achievement. They feel important, respected and therefore are more productive. To let each team member do their own thing with no major purpose, or knowledge of how they contribute to the team, the organization, the vision- can be detrimental to moral!
3. Recognition of efforts is essential. All of us no matter how successful crave for a bit of recognition for all our efforts. As a leader of a team, you must be able to see the good in people. Be like a miner looking for gold, forget the dirt! Find what is good in people and recognize it for it is a precious thing. Those people that only focus on the dirt will never achieve his objectives of motivating and pushing a team.
4. Criticize the performance never the performer and always do it in private! To get the most out of a team, it is important to motivate them and also it is important to achieve results, if a person is not performing to standard always bring them in and talk to them about the job that was done, never insult them as people. For example “John, I appreciate the work you have done, and you are a very bright person, now if this work was done by anyone else, it would be satisfactory- however I expect a lot from you and know that you can produce a better result than the average person”
5. Expect the best from your team. Being positive and expecting big things from your team has been scientifically proven to produce higher results in teams. This may be due to your team aiming to perform to a higher standard, being more confident because you believe in them, or being more optimistic in general therefore creating a positive environment to work in!
6. Give enough people what they want and you will get what you want: It is never the other way around. Work with people to find out what their goals and dreams are, find ways that you can work together to achieve the goals of the organization while fulfilling the goals of an individual. An oversimplified example would be as a manager, tell your team that if they help you achieve certain objectives, you will give them a raise when these are met. This can apply to many different aspects but always remember giving enough people what they want and you will automatically get what you want.

While there are many more ways to get the best out of your team and improve your leadership, these principles are a good start. Always develop yourself to learn more and work in places and with people that show a high integrity and live by these principles. Your levels of leadership will soar and achievements will blossom. We are after all a product of our environment. But the environment we are in is our choice!
