How Mindmapping can lead you to right decision-makingSubmitted by Avezah Fri, 12 Oct 2007
Decision Making is a important component in our life. From the simple and mundane as selecting new clothes to the more important as choosing your life partner, we are called upon to make our choice, which involves decision-making. Invariably, major decisions bear deep consequences and hence needs great care.
Despite making well-informed decisions, things may move at a tangent, due to forces beyond our control. Therefore it is prudent to expect the known and be prepared for other possible and unforeseen elements as well. Wisdom, proper judgment and experience guide us in making the right decision. However, gut feelings and hunches have a part to play in our decision-making. Many a time our gut feelings and strong hunches tend to prove right and in many cases, could be a turning point as well. Overall, wide exposure, sharp critical and in-depth analysis and foresight are vital elements for right decision-making. Most of us do not have the advantage of hindsight. We can seek advice from more experienced individuals, but ultimately the decision rests with us. Hence clarity of thought and detail are helpful assets in the decision-making process. You have to think through all the probable results flowing from a particular decision. When the stakes are equally poised, it is better to be prepared for both. Being prepared with a set of action plan will help to tackle situations adroitly. At times your thinking may be clouded when a problem, situation or issue overwhelms us. By weighing all the available options and analyzing each for their consequences, you can arrive at the most appropriate decision. A simple tool that can help you in the decision-making process is Mind Mapping. Since Mind Maps are based on non-linear method where only key words and phrases are used, instead of long sentences of text, you can capture all the flow of your thoughts easily. It draws our full attention and aids in making in depth analysis. Association is a key element of Mindmapping and this naturally helps us to see the links and connections and the consequences between various aspects of our decisions. Also, as Mind Maps uses the parallel processing ability of our brain, it leads to radiant thinking, thereby allowing thoughts to flow in different directions unhindered. You can review the various options and make a weighted analysis depending on the likely impact arising from such a decision. This way you can prioritize your options and make the right decision. Mind Map therefore is a useful tool in leading you through the process of decision-making.
