Make the right decision with MindmapsSubmitted by Avezah Fri, 12 Oct 2007
Decision Making is a crucial aspect of our life. Whether simple and mundane, we are forced to make decisions at every level of our activity – from choosing the right dress for a party to the more critical as venturing into new business. Invariably, major decisions bear deep consequences and therefore needs great care.
Even when we make well-informed decisions we have no control over the consequences that spin off from them. The key element therefore is to prepare not just for known consequences but for other possible and unforeseen ones as well. A great part of right decision involves deep analysis, experience, foresight and wisdom; however, gut feelings and hunches do have an important place in our decision-making process. Many a business decisions have proved successful by relying a great deal on gut feelings and strong hunches. In general, we could say wide exposure, critical and perceptive analysis and far sightedness are crucial elements enabling the process of right decision-making. Most of us do not have the advantage of long experience to be wise. Although we can approach more experienced and exposed individuals for mentoring, for most part, decision-making is ultimately a personal process. That is why clarity of thought and detail will greatly help us. You have to analyze an issue at all angles and know the likely result that your decision will cause. Being prepared with a set of action plan to deal with the fallout of your decision will help to tackle the situation adroitly. When the stakes are weighed equally over a decision, it is better to be prepared for the best and the worst case. When we are overwhelmed by an issue or a situation we should weigh all the options objectively and choose the most appropriate course of action. A simple tool to help in the decision-making process is Mind Mapping. Using Mind Maps you can easily capture the flow of your thoughts on an issue or problem under question. With Mindmaps, you will be able to give your full attention to the issue or problem at hand, and think through the problem in depth. Also, as Mind Maps serve as ideal ground for associations, it helps us to draw connections among different elements of our decision making process. We will be able to see the links and connections and the consequences between various aspects of our decision. In addition, Mind Maps uses the parallel processing ability of our brain leading to radiant thinking. This is allowing free flow of thoughts in all directions unhindered, even if the idea seems unconnected. You can review the various options available and make a weighted analysis based on the impact arising from such a decision. You could use your subjective analysis to prioritize your options, find links between different elements of your choice and based on these, arrive at the right decision. Mind Maps therefore are of immense value in the decision making process.
