Recovery from Addiction: A New Way of LifeSubmitted by Simmons Sat, 24 Oct 2009
It is a word in our society that has come to the forefront of much media and medical attention. Lives have been destroyed by addiction often before the recovery process can begin. When does the recovery process begin? When the addict can first admit to themselves that they have a problem.
The addiction can be in any form whether street drug addiction, prescription medicine addiction, sexual addiction, alcohol addiction, or even more recently Internet addiction. All across the board addiction lives in varying degrees with varying substances. Recovery from addiction is a process that has to be learned slowly and it begins with admission of the problem and a willingness to overcome the problem with professional help. Once the addict can admit that they have a problem, treatment can begin with either a 12-step program, or in more severe cases of substance abuse, a detox program followed by a 12-step program and counseling. 12-step programs are designed to provide help and hope for the addict. It is usually done in a group environment where other addicts come together to share their struggles with addiction and work the program. It reinforces the fact that the addict is not alone in their addiction or recovery. Another method of treatment is individual counseling for the addict. This can be done by finding a professional counselor who specializes in addiction therapy. This form of treatment educates the addict about their addiction and provides coping skills for living a clean and sober life. Once the addict gets treatment, they need support throughout the remainder of their recovery by attending 12-step meetings, talking to their counselor, talking to their close family and friends about any issues that may arise that could cause a relapse. Sometimes talking through a craving with someone who understands and knows what the addict is going through can help them maintain their treatment and recovery process. Recovery from addiction is not a temporary fix it is an ongoing process that the addict must maintain for the remainder of their lives. It is learning a new way of life without drugs, alcohol, or other substances whether it is physical dependence or psychological dependence. Getting the proper help and therapy from professionals can make a world of difference for the addict, but ultimately the addict has sole power to choose a new way of living. The power does not rest in the hands of anyone outside the addict's life but must come from within the addict themselves and that is a willingness to stick with the program. Without the willingness of the addict and their participation, the program or self-help group is powerless. If you or someone you know feels that they may have a problem with substance abuse or addiction, it is recommended that you seek professional help as soon as possible. The sooner you seek help the recovery process can begin.
