With the rising costs of medical care and the tremendous increase in cases involving misdiagnosis, prescription mishaps and surgery accidents, it is no wonder people from all walks of life are looking for alternative ways to get and stay healthy. This article looks at techniques in use since ancient times to harness the powers within healing crystals to both heal and prevent disease.

An amulet, as defined by Wikipedia, is an object that protects a person from trouble. It differs from a talisman only in the fact that an amulet is a natural object, whether carved or un-carved, whereas a talisman is generally a made object, such as a drawing or carving on paper or metal.

An amulet can be made for most any purpose, however some of the better known types are called healing amulets. They can be designed to help with a specific illness or injury, or used to help prevent a wide range of ailments that affect humans or animals.

The only supplies that are mandatory for your amulet are a natural item to become the actual amulet and your intent or purpose for the amulet. Additional items can be added to make your amulet uniquely yours or you can stick with just the basics. The choice is completely up to your personal desires.

In-expensive, tumbled gemstones are perhaps the best material to make an amulet from. They can be purchased for $1 to $3 for most types and have the added advantage of being beautiful enough to wear as jewelry too. Affixing a cap to the stone, allows it to be hung from a chain or cord, so it can be worn as a necklace, bracelet or added to a keychain.

Your choice in gemstone type will depend on what the purpose of your amulet is. Prior to shopping for the actual gemstone you will be using, you may wish to consult a book or website that lists the correspondences of various gemstones and pick a stone whose natural abilities co-inside with the purpose for your amulet. Look for stones that have been used historically to cure aliments of the specific type or place where you are in need of healing.

For instance, if you are looking to make an amulet to help you conceive a child, amber would be a good choice. Choose moonstone when looking for an amulet to help a caregiver cope with the emotional strains of caring for a sick or dying patient.

When you have determined the type of gemstone you wish to use you are ready to purchase (or find) your stone. There are hundreds of sites around the internet offering stones for sell. It can pay to shop around because prices vary greatly from store to store. In most cases, you can get a gemstone of approximately 1 inch in size for less than $3. Only the rarest of stones would cost more than $3 in such a small size and many can be purchased for about $1.

If at all possible, it is best to purchase your stones in a local store so you can have to opportunity to hold the stone before purchase. If you are personally in tune with the natural energies of the earth and gemstones in general, you will often find when you are presented with the opportunity to handle the stones prior to purchase; one or more stones will call out to you, trying to get your attention. A situation like this is almost always preferable to someone choosing your stone for you.

If there are no stores local to you, where you can purchase stone, don't worry. You can become in tuned with any crystal with just a little effort on your part. Perhaps the easiest way is to simply handle the stone as often as possible and sleep with it for a day or two prior to charging it for it's purpose.

Once you have purchased your stone, it should be cleansed of negative energies and then charged with the intent your amulet is designed for, prior to use. This can be done by any method you prefer based on your own personal belief system and if you are not familiar with these methods, Shamans and Wiccans both have good rituals that are easy to do and a quick keyword search should turn up many results.

Once cleansed and charged, your amulet is ready to use. If you like you can add painted or carved symbols to it adding extra energy and focus, or simply wear it as is and draw upon the energies when ever needed.
