Sylvia Browne Psychic ControversySubmitted by yellowdog Wed, 7 Mar 2007
What a controversy it is! Sylvia Browne is for certain one of the most notable psychic celebrities in the public eye today. She appears to be one of those personalities about whom one can say, "you either love her or you hate her." Sylvia's champions identify her as well respected, earnest, and inspiring, while her critics choose words such as despicable, a fraud, and a scam artist.
Sylvia Browne's journey began in Missouri in 1936. She reports being aware of psychic visions as young as 3 years of age. In her work as a psychic reader, Sylvia claims that she receives information from God and she strives to translate this information clearly in offering this insight to others. She maintains she reads a person's etheric design which is an additional source of information relevant to their life experiences, that she can provide to her customers. Sylvia Browne is now a best selling author, a regular guest on television talk shows, and hosts her own show on Hay House radio. She continues to offer individual psychic readings both in person and via the phone. In addition, Sylvia runs the Sylvia Browne Corporation and has launched a church in California, known as the Society of Novus Spiritus. Whether you believe in psychic abilities or not, the debate about Sylvia's legitimacy has been running since she ascended into the spotlight. James Randi, an outspoken critic, argues that Sylvia is not a psychic, but a cold reader, which is a known method that produces the aura of clairvoyance when it is in truth nothing more than observing and reporting the obvious characteristics of the person being read. Anti-Sylvia Browne websites and forums flood the internet with a deluge of negativity about her. These greatly overshadow the resources that speak in support of Sylvia and her work. Although a sweeping record detailing Sylvia's errors is readily available, it is truly difficult to turn up a record of her successes, aside from broad claims found on her own internet site. Sylvia Browne and her supporters assert that she is predominantly successful in her predictions while assisting on police cases. They stress that she is especially successful in predicting future events likely to take place in someone's life. Regrettably for Sylvia Browne and her supporters, a recent high visiblility case of a missing child has once again created doubt about her legitimacy. This is the story of the 11 year old boy who was kidnapped 4 years ago and was recently found to be alive, living near his previous home. A few months after the boy went missing, Sylvia reported that he was dead, and described in detail, the perpetrator and where they body could be found. This has proven to be very inaccurate, and along side several other cases in which Sylvia has been proven inaccurate in her reading of events has fueled her critics' mudslinging. Sylvia continues publicly to defend her work. Despite the ups and downs in her fifty-year career, Sylvia Browne psychic has managed to entertain, and in some capacity, to serve, friends and enthusiasts throughout the decades. About the Author
