Planning to get a sewing machine but didn't know what to consider, given the many different brands, styles, models and prices available nowadays? It's inevitable. After all, the sewing machine is one of the most hefty investments you'll probably buy for your sewing room and thus it's alright to feel a little anxious and lost with all the information available.

To help you with that, here are some rules of thumb to consider when choosing a suitable sewing machine:

(1) Plan The Usage of The Sewing Machine

Ask yourself, what do you intend to use the sewing machine for? Is it for sewing new shirts for your husband, making quilts for the kid or embroidering intricate patterns on your new hankies? Regardless of the rationale, always remember this. Sewing machines are designed for various functions and buying one that fulfil your wants is the crux of a good buying decision. Don't get something just because your neighbour has one or you'll end up with a white elephant!

Next, consider the usable space available in your sewing room or the section of your household where you'll be placing the sewing machine. Is it big or modest? Are there electrical ports available? This information will help you determine if you need a sewing machine that's electric, mechanical, computerized, small and neat or just serge.

(2) Research On What's Available

Assuming you've a general idea of what you probably need, inquire on the models or brands of sewing machines which specializes in that. For instance, if embroidery's your thing, googling for that will point you to brands such as Viking etc. Check out the versions they offer, their functions and naturally, the price ranges.

Go through some of the customer's reviews to see if there's anything specially good or disgusting about a model.

(3) Decide On Your Budget

When you reach this step, you should have a general idea of how much those machines that fulfill your needs, costs. Settle on an amount you can and are willing to fork out. The range can vary from less than a hundred for a no frills, simple model to over seven thousand for a machine that does almost anything other than cutting out your fabric. Be firm and don't fall into the trap of buying something because you think you "would" require them. Get something you know you'll definitely use once you fork out the cash!

(4) Test Out the Machine(s)

Shortlist a few sewing machines you may want to buy and pop by for a trial at your nearby neighbourhood dealer. Or the place of a person whom you know possesses the equipment. Test out the stitches and functions that you'll be using with samples of fabric you usually work on.

At the same time, check out with your pal or the dealer about its durability, proof of guarantee, ease of changing machine components, service costs, upgrades etc. If you're liasing with a dealer, try asking if they offer free sewing lessons as a purchase incentive.

(5) Make The Purchase

Once you've determine which equipment to get, making the purchase is the easiest part. You can buy it from your neighbourhood dealer or online via reputed stores. Some online distributors offer great discounts or bargains because of their lower operating expenses. Nonetheless, do ensure such cost savings are not overridden by an unjust return policy or expensive shipping charges. Be aware your rights so that you'll have a much gratifying online purchasing experience!
