Asians have long influenced the West in terms of style. From fashion to art to architecture, Asian décor has only grown more prevalent over the years. And this year, it's set to make an even bigger splash. Designers are putting more and more Oriental elements into American households, and the results are nothing short of spectacular. If you're thinking of joining the trend, here are some tips to make sure you do it right.

Emphasize open space

Asians value their personal space, and you can see it in the way they design their homes. The floors are usually left bare, with minimal furniture and accents. This gives the room an open, airy feel and helps focus your attention on the style and design of the home. And when you've pared it down, make sure to avoid clutter-get a small box or drawer to keep everything out of the way.

Keep an eye for contrast.

Contrast is a central theme in Asian home décor. Start by choosing a high-contrast color scheme, such as black and white, red and blue, yellow and purple. You can also throw in an earth color such as brown for accent. Look for contrast in other aspects-combine hard stone and soft wool, smooth glass and textured wood. Even subtle differences can make a big impact in the overall mood of your home.

Introduce natural elements.

Even "modern" Asian homes have a certain affinity with nature. While it won't hurt to use a few synthetic elements, natural materials such as wood and stone should take center stage. Choose a wooden couch for your main furniture, or a stone sculpture for an unused corner. Or if you have a garden, open your windows and take advantage of the great view. Indoor plants also work well-place them near a window for a more seamless look.

Accent with area rugs.

Although bare floors are common, Asian décor also makes good use of area rugs. Carpets tend to make the room look stuffy, but area rugs leave a bit of floor visible so you can still appreciate its natural hue. Choose an area rug that matches your colors so that it completes your décor and serves as a focal point for the room.
