Bedroom Furniture Buying Guide

Submitted by John Lewis

Before you head online to buy some furniture for your bedroom, ask yourself the following questions. Doing so will mean you will have a better understanding of what you need to buy:

• How big is your bedroom?
• Which furniture items do you intend to buy?
• Do you have a specific theme in mind - classic, modern or ethnic?
• Do you have to colour co-ordinate the furniture with other items in your house. If so, which colour?
• What is your budget?

Once you have answered the above questions you can then start to narrow down your options.

The basic list of bedroom furniture should include:

• Bed/Mattress: According to Professor Chris Idzikowski of the London Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service, a person can have an extra hour of sleep each night if they lay on a perfectly comfortable bed and mattress. Remember to buy a mattress along with the bed base as most are designed to complement each other. So, buying an expensive and comfortable bed with a cheap mattress would not make much sense.

• Bedside table: A bedside table is a really useful piece of furniture to place a lamp, a water bottle, a book and other bedtime essentials on. Make sure that the height of the table is not taller than the bed itself; otherwise you will not be able to see or reach the alarm clock while lying down in bed. Otherwise, a well co-ordinated bedside table or chest enhances the overall look of the bed.

• Dressers/Chest: These are extremely useful bedroom addition. The more space you have the better it is for you to keep your clothes nice and tidy. A general rule is that the bigger it is, the better it is.

• Bedroom mirrors: There are various types of bedroom mirrors are available. The simplest is of a full length mirror which can be attached onto a wall. However, for a more glamorous look, you can buy a mirror that comes with a dressing table, such as a gallery mirror.

• Wardrobe: A wardrobe can be a very decorative addition to any bedroom. Depending on your storage needs, you can choose either a two or three door wardrobe piece.

What's more, if you want to use your bedroom also as a study, then it is recommended that you buy a separate table to keep your books, computers, and other work essentials on.
