There are loads of kinds of dance out there, so it is not surprising that there is a lot of variety in dance clothes. A lot of sports manufacturers now produce dance wear, as well as dance clothing specialists. Clothes worn by dancers need to be practical, but also to look attractive, as they play a part in performances. Some dances need specific clothing colours, materials or characteristics to give them the right feel and atmosphere. All dancers need to think carefully about which sorts of clothes they will need, and do research before making any decisions if inexperienced.

Dance clothes have changed a lot over the years; an effective example of the evolution of dance wear is ballet. When ballet first emerged the clothing worn by the performers was very cumbersome and only allowed for a limited amount of movement. As the dance became more advanced and there was a desire for more and more intricate and demanding moves, it became clear that a new kind of ballet clothing was required, which could allow for more movement. Ever since, manufacturers of dance garments have been trying to create beautiful yet functional items, with the dancer's comfort as their main priority, using new materials to help them achieve dance wear perfection. Several specific items of clothing have appeared which are widely used by dancers, but also sometimes feature in popular fashion, such as the leotard, the unitard and the tutu.

The material used for dance clothes is very important. It needs to stretch well, wick moisture and perspiration away from a dancer's skin to help keep them cool and dry. The fit of dance clothes is very important, a dancer needs to feel comfortable so clothing should not chafe or rub, nor should it be too loose. There are huge numbers of dance clothes manufacturers, who produce high quality garments for all manner of dance styles. Although specific dance clothing items can be hard to come by on the high street, once someone knows there size (which may vary between brands), there are loads of trustworthy and great value online stores where there are bargains to be found! Well fitting, good quality garments can make a big difference when dancing so it is worthwhile trying a few different brands to see which allows most comfort.

Dance has inspired human beings for many thousands of years and has been performed in so much variety, and for such diverse reasons it almost beggars belief. Some dance to tell a story or to depict a certain act. Others dance for religious purpose or as a job. Some just dance to express great joy or another overwhelming emotion. Dance has the power to inspire; it is an amazing form of expression which almost everyone enjoys. Dancing can follow strict rules to produce a certain impact, or it can be freestyle and unique to the individual. No matter why you dance, make sure you have the dance clothes to help you express what you need to!
