Flooring tends to be the most expensive part of home design, not only for its upfront cost but also for the maintenance it entails. That\'s why homeowners should take the time to take care of their floors beyond the usual sweeping and dusting. With the daily wear and tear it gets, your floor can easily lose its charm, not to mention quality, without proper care.

Fortunately, there are ways to keep your flooring in top shape without costing too much or getting in the way of your décor. For starters, you can schedule regular resealing or refinishing, which protects the surface against physical damage and gives it a smooth, shiny texture. Most floors come pre-treated with a clear coating, but you\'ll have to reapply them occasionally to keep out dirt and dust.

Carpets are also a great way to protect your floors. Because they go from wall to wall, they offer full protection and give your home a clean, consistent look. This is especially practical for rooms that don\'t get a lot of traffic, such as bedrooms. Not only do they pad your flooring, they also lend a cozy, inviting look to your space that few other flooring materials can provide.

If you\'re not up for carpet maintenance, you can try area rugs instead. Rugs can be used in place of or in combination with carpets. Their main advantage is that they can be moved around, so you don\'t have to install and reinstall whenever you rearrange the room. You can use it under your furniture to prevent skid marks, or in the middle of a high-traffic area (such as the hallway) to absorb some of the pressure. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, patterned rugs help hide mud and dirt stains so you don\'t have to clean them every other day.

Of course, your best bet is to choose durable, low-maintenance flooring in the first place. These days, quality doesn\'t always mean a higher price or less style. Flooring materials such as tiles, stone, vinyl and hardwood last surprisingly well, and some are easily affordable. Design-wise, they\'re also very versatile-virtually every material comes in a variety of patterns to suit every décor theme.
