Cotton Scarves... And The Rest of The World!Submitted by ronrJ Sun, 28 Jun 2009
Scarves in general have gained a lot of ground in the fashion world as of late. Its popularity has been rising rapidly and it seems to have moved past the trend stage and supplanted itself as a real fashion garment that can be used in different climate and occasions. With the demand for these garments going through the roof, designers and manufacturers have worked overtime and pumped out the hardware.
As it is, there are a limitless amount of designs, styles and colors to choose from while keep the price tag relatively low. Not only are scarves a great way of keeping yourself warm but its versatility as a fashion accessory makes it all the more appealing. Today though, there is casual debate as to what is the best fabric to use for scarves. There are so many to choose from that it seems that it will never end. The major contender though is cotton. Cotton scarves have huge advantages over other kinds because of its very appealing characteristics. For one, it definitely looks a lot better because of the soft and smooth texture of the fabric. Especially since this fashion accessory is also meant for style, it is important that the texture is of the highest quality. Another advantage of scarf made of such material is that it is very cheap and abundant which means that accessibility to this product comes easy for manufacturers. This can drive costs lowers while still maintaining profits for designers and manufacturers. Of course, it still does have its own disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage is that cotton scarves can shrink after washing and eventually develop wrinkles. This is a major concern as designs can easily get distorted once the fabric starts shrinking or developing wrinkles. The major competitors against cotton-made scarf are those made of wool and polyester. Wool has the advantage of being the best insulator during cold weather but no where near as comfortable as cotton. Polyester on the other hand, does not shrink or develop wrinkles but, again, is nowhere near as comfortable as cotton fabrics. So far, the solution to this problem is to make blends of cotton and polyester to try to create fabrics that give the best of both worlds. Some critics still argue that cotton is the way to go even though some fabric blends are just as good as pure cotton scarves. At the end of the day though, it is the consumer who is benefiting from this debate as you can expect higher quality fabrics to continually be developed in hopes of finding that best blend.
