As we know the word perfume used today derives from the Latin "per fumum", meaning through smoke. Perfumery, began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt but was developed and further refined by the Romans and Persians. Although perfumery also existed in East Asia, much of its fragrances are incense based. Since its invention, fragrance has been one of the biggest must haves of people anywhere in the globe. It played a big role in the acts of romance and courtship. In addition, it was also commonly used in religious rituals. While we all have our natural smells and aroma, it adds a lot of confidence and attractiveness when you know you smell especially fragrant with the help of all those blended herbs and chemicals that make up your floral.

To the time passed, in the twelfth century the widespread use of fragrances became a common occurrence when international trade flourished. In the 17th century, it made a huge comeback. It was during this period that perfumed gloves were introduced in France and the guild of scent makers was formed. People started to put fragrance on everything. They used floral on themselves; furniture, fans, and clothing were all doused in fragrance. Eau de Cologne is invented in the18th century which revolutionized how these were used. The 1980's saw the more affluent person seeking out the expensive fragrances. They could now be used in mouthwashes, baths, added to sugar and to wine, and even used in enemas. In 19th century, advance modern chemistry caused a change in perfume industry, After the French Revolution, people wanted luxury items again. And the 1990's witnessed a boom in production of exotic and expensive products. In the 20th century with the more advances in technology, and the mass production of fragrance became possible. With mass production came lower prices, and scents became more accessible to many people. Fragrances also now included synthetic scents. So far, the world of scents in the 21st century is based largely on the world of show business and entertainment.

It seems that every day, another famous person comes out with a new floral. Some have succeeded quite well, and have several well-known scents to their credit. Today we have celebrities endorsing and marketing their own brands of fragrances. Others release one and are never heard from, at least in the world of fragrance, again. Analysts predict this trend will not last. Nowadays there is huge number of choices available in the market.
