In 1998, Sean John Combs, also known as "Diddy" in the music scene, launched a signature collection of sportswear. The clothing line carried the name sean john, taken from his first and middle given names. It has always been a dream for him to start his own apparel line to fill a void in the market for well-made, sophisticated fashion forward clothing that also reflects an urban sensibility and style.
Currently, sean john is co-owned by Combs and supermarket mogul Ron Burke. The company has enjoyed critical and commercial success with revenues now exceeding $100 million annually.
Aside from being commercially successful, Sean John has also received acclaim from the fashion industry. From 2000 to 2005, Sean John has been nominated for its excellence in design in the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) which is held annually in New York. Sean John was even awarded the CFDA Men's Designer of the Year award in 2004.
The brand has made a mark in media with the first nationally televised runway show in February 2001 during Fall Fashion Week. The show was aired live on E! Television and the Style Network. The following year, still during Fall Fashion Week, the New York Times ran a front page story on Sean John.
In the business arena, it has acquired and invested in several companies. In 2004, Sean John invested in the high-end label Zac Posen while in 2008, it purchased urban lifestyle brand Enyce from Liz Claiborne for $20 million dollars.
Currently, it carries men's and boys' apparel and accessories like pants, shorts, tops, sweaters, blazers, underwear, socks, belts, cufflinks, eyewear, wallets, hats, scarves, gloves, and ties. Although the brand only has apparels and accessories for males, it offers fragrance for both men and women. Its latest men's perfume called I Am King was launched in November 2008 and has the largest print ad in Times Square.
