Shawls... The Unique Faroese ShawlSubmitted by ronrJ Tue, 21 Jul 2009
One of the most unique kinds of shawls is the Faroese, which is traditionally worn in the Faroe Islands, a province in Denmark, around a century ago. Like the enchanting island from which it came from, Faroese shawl will surely capture your fancy if you\'re just starting to wear, collect or knit wraps.
The Faroese stole is an extraordinary piece of garment with its most distinct feature being the trapezoidal gusset at the center back, which gives it a truly unique shape. As you know shawls come in different shapes. There are triangular, rectangular, square and semi-circular. Faroese, however, are shaped like the wings of a butterfly. In addition to its back gusset having a unique trapezoid shape, the side panels of the Faroese shawl is triangular while the edges are often lined with lace. The ends of some Faroese are extra long and slender so, in cold weather, they can be easily wrapped around the user\'s hips or waist for added warmth. Usually, these have a shaping to the shoulders that allow the user to simply drape it over the shoulder and it will stay in place even without a pin to secure it and even as the wearer moves about normally. This is another characteristic that is truly unique to Faroese stoles. Those who have worn it swear that it really doesn\'t slip off the shoulder even though it\'s just draped there freely. With all other wraps, either you secure the piece with a pin right away or tie it in a knot. Otherwise, you\'ll find yourself constantly arranging it because it won\'t stay put. Also, a common feature of the Faroese is intricate lacework since lace knitting is one the traditional arts and crafts of the Faroese people. But if the exotic name \'Faroese\' gives the impression that these shawls were used only by wealthy women at society affairs, its origin shows quite the opposite. This piece of garment was designed by Faroese working women because they needed to wear something to protect them from the chilly seaside breeze while working but still allow them to move freely. Traditionally, Faroese shawls are knitted from strong wool taken from the Islands\' domestic sheep. They came in natural sheep colors like cream, black, brown or gray. If your curiosity has been piqued, you can start shopping for these pretty unique pieces online for an incredibly affordable price. You can even find an all-lace number for only five dollars! If you\'re into knitting, there are also many beautiful knitting patterns on the web if you would like to make your very own Faroese shawl.
