Something Different for Father's Day

Submitted by dianeforster

The first father's day celebration is thought to have been in June 1910 and was derived by Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington whilst listening to a mother's day sermon at her local church. Her idea was to establish a celebration that honoured fathers like her own father, who had been sadly widowed and left with six young children to care for by himself. She felt that her father deserved to be recognised for all he had done for his children and for the support he had given them despite having none himself. The tradition developed of giving flowers and other handmade items as father's day gifts.

A great opposition was made to making father's day a national holiday through fear of its commercialisation and the potential loss of the true meaning of the day. A group called The national father's day committee which incorporated several trade groups formed with the goals of legitimising the holiday in the mind of people and boosting sales during the time. Father's day was not made official until American President Nixon made a proclamation in 1972 to make the thought evoking festival a national holiday.

Today father's day is celebrated on the third Sunday in the month of June in most countries including the United Kingdom and on differing dates in other countries. The holiday has to an extent lost some of its original meaning with many focusing on commercial elements such as mass produced presents and cards. Father's day should be about families and the love, tenderness and gratefulness within them, much like Sonora had in mind. The tradition of giving personal and more meaningful father's day giftsshould be brought back and the commercial aspect of the holiday put to rest.

Atelier de famille started as an idea from a mother, when trying to find a way of ensuring her children always had her mobile number with them, the result was a delicate piece of personalised jewellery engraved with her mobile number.
