Western Apparel Quality: A Step Above the Rest

It often seems that the fashion industry would like for us to buy a new wardrobe every fall. They seem to tell us each year that the "in" colors are different, that the cut of pants is new and improved, that the desired silhouette looks just a little bit different this year, and if you continue to wear last year's clothing, then you will be forever out of date. There is one exception to this, a look that is timeless and authentic- western wear. There are a number of reasons why western apparel has maintained its popularity. For one, some of those actually wearing this style of clothing have a relevant job in which it is a functional choice. For others, they live in an area where that style of clothing has always been the norm, and is well-suited to the environment. For others, however, western wear is something that drifts into and out of their wardrobe, based on what is in style, but comes out enough that it is always spared when it comes time to clean out the closet.

One reason for this is likely that a lot of the appeal of western wear is that it is high quality and built to last. Think about what the original purpose of jeans and cowboy boots actually were- these items of clothing were meant to be durable beyond anything else that existed for time spent on the trail, exposed to the elements. They were also meant to be protective. The high shaft on cowboy boots is not a fashion statement- the original purpose was to protect a cowboy's leg from irritation in the saddle and from the rattlesnakes, rocks, and thorns that littered the trails they rode.

If we take cowboy boots as a specific example, these are an item that are all about craftsmanship. The stitching on cowboy boots is often done by hand, a skill that can take years to master. The first pair of cowboy boots ever made were a custom order, and custom boots continue to be popular. Nothing can beat a boot that was made to fit your foot, exactly. As the boots actually have a job to do, other than look nice, quality materials must be used, and the construction of them must be solid. Can you buy cheap flimsy cowboy boots? Well, sure, as with anything there are going to be lower-end manufacturers, but if you look at companies who are actually marketing to real cowboys, you aren't going to find any shoddy workmanship there.
