What Clothing Does A Chef Require?

Submitted by veronicajewell

Chefs have to dress in their uniform so as to appear official and to show that they are competent for the work that they have been delegated to do.

The chefs’ uniform consists of various clothes, for instance: a scarf, bow tie, a bandanna, jacket, hand gloves, pants, apron, handkerchief, shoes and the prominent hat.

All the above mentioned clothing has their own role that they are included in the chefs’ official wear. However, the clothing are not put on on many occasions because, either temperatures in the kitchen are soaring high or that they are restricting the chef’s movements in the kitchen. On most official days, like Valentines Day or even when people have booked reservation, the chefs must look at their best.

The role of the bandanna is to absorb the excess sweating due to too much heat that is in the kitchen, the bandanna along with the scarf and the handkerchief do this role. With the absorption of the excess heat, the chef remains comfortable. With time, the bandanna is being slowly being replaced by the apron, this is because the aprons are easy to put on and way much comfortable. Aprons and bandannas are made of soft fiber like cotton thus they make the body cool.

The most essential part of a chef’s clothing is the jacket; the latest trend is one where chefs put on fancy jackets. The jackets could be having the restaurant’s logo on it, either on the pockets or the collars. The jackets in some restaurants are provided according to the rank of the chef, the rank could be depicted by markings on the shoulder strapping of the jacket. The chef jackets basically give them the modern and smart look.

The symbolic hat is another important accessory in the chefs clothing. The hat symbolizes a chef, it is important that a chef puts on their hats during their duties. Although now days scull caps are replacing the hats because they keep hair from falling into the food they are preparing and also to absorb sweat.

For the pants, chefs have a variety of choices, for instance the baggy or the pleated trousers. The most used are the baggy pants because they are more comfortable and the color of these trousers is usually dark so that they conceal any dirt that they may have picked while preparing dishes.

Another important accessory of the chefs wear is the shoes, normally they are black in color, and the shoes usually have flat heels so as to protect the chefs from falling while preparing food. Due to the flat heels the shoes are comfortable to walk and work with in the kitchen.

Another provision of the chefs clothing is a napkin, the function of the napkin is to wipe clean utensils as the chef is serving dishes.

In most cases, the dressing code for most chefs is white clothing; the main reason for this is to symbolize purity and peace. However with time restaurant owners have resorted to other colors so as to attract the attention of the customers.
