Jewelry has been a part of human culture for thousands of years. The oldest piece of jewelry in existence today dates back almost 100,000 years. How has jewelry survived and evolved throughout history? Why is jewelry such an intrinsic part of our everyday life?

The word "jewelry" comes from the word "jewel," an anglicized version of the Old French word "jouel." The word "jouel" is derived from the Latin word "jocale," which means "plaything." This meaning hints towards the origin of jewelry as a plaything, something shiny and pretty that was ultimately meaningless. However, over time jewelry began to be used for a variety of reasons. Jewelry can express the status of a person, or signify membership in a particular group. For example, weddings rings let others know that the wearer is married and crosses imply that the wearer is Christian. Jewelry has also been used as currency or as a way to store wealth. Jewelry made out of precious metals like gold and silver can be bought, sold or traded. Expensive jewelry can also be used to show off one's wealth. Jewelry may serve a functional purpose. A beautiful pin or fancy buckle can be used to keep a shirt or belt closed. Many people wear jewelry for supernatural or superstitious reasons. They may believe a certain amulet or necklace will protect them from demons or give them good luck. The most common reason for people to wear jewelry is because they like the way it looks on them.

Today, there is a huge variety of jewelry available for purchase. Jewelry can be made from almost anything. Common metals used include sterling silver, pewter, gold, platinum and copper. Other base materials used include paper, stone, hemp, and plastic. Additional materials used include semi precious and precious gemstones such as amethyst, diamond, opal, turquoise, topaz, ruby and crystal. Beads, buttons, fabric, coins, glass, clay, bone and ivory may also be used.

Artistic design has always been an integral part of jewelry. Today, anyone can make their own jewelry. Children create simple necklaces from hemp and plastic beads, or collect charms and add them to bracelets. Experienced jewelers make exquisite diamond necklaces worth thousands of dollars, or put together beaded necklaces so delicate and expert that they are displayed in museums. If you want to start making jewelry, you can always head over to a jewelry supply shop or a craft shop and check out what they have available.
