Flower Market In Dangwa

Submitted by Sheena thornbird

There are many philippine flower shops around the country that Filipinos could easily buy their flowers from. Popular venues are in malls and shopping centers. But other than these places, there is also a popular place in Manila that Manileños would usually go to buy flowers, particularly in special occasions such as Valentine's Day or All Soul's Day, is Dangwa Flower Market.

Although a number of philippine flower shops are also available in nearby malls and shopping centers, many Manileños would still buy their flowers from Dangwa Flower Market. One reason for the flower market's popularity is because of the wide range of flowers sold there as well as the variety of flower shops found in the market. According to latest reports, there are an over of 50 flower shops set up along the street of Dos Castillas and other parallel streets in Dimasalang, Sampaloc, Manila.

Another popular feature about the flower market is the cost of every flower sold there. According to many patrons of the market, flowers sold in Dangwa is far cheaper than that of those found in malls and several shopping centers. Difference of costs could vary from 50% to as much as 100%. This is because, in a regular basis, roses can be bargained for as low as P50 a dozen whereas bouquet of roses sold on malls could range from P200-P400 Philippine Pesos.

The flower market has also been site to several historical events. During the 80's and the 90's, the market has surpassed the fame of competitors in Quiapo, Manila and Baclaran. Some flower shops in Quiapo have eventually migrated to Dangwa Flower Market which further increased the market's popularity in Manila.

Dangwa Flower Market, and several of the old philippine flower shops there today, have also been known to supply flowers directly to Malacañang when Imelda Marcos was the First Lady. At that time the market provided flowers for big flower shops which in turn decorated the Malacanang Palace.

The Dangwa Flower Market is also known for its other services. While a great number of people flock the flower depot to buy flowers, there are also some who visit to get their flowers arranged. Stores in Dangwa take arrangement orders for special affairs like weddings, debuts, wakes, fiestas, and other church celebrations. Flower arrangement, like other services in the area, is also very inexpensive.
