Flowers For Expression

Submitted by Sheena thornbird

What is the best gift when it comes to conveying one's feelings for someone, like a confession of love? In the art of courting, particularly in the part in which the man would profess his deep love for the woman, the use of flowers have always been very popular. Why is it that flowers are the kind of gift that a man would give to a woman in confessing his love? Is it because flowers are more appropriate as a gift for a woman? Or is it because it has been tradition for a man to give flowers to a woman in times of professing?

Many may already know this but the real reason is that flowers were once used as a way to convey one's feelings to a person which are otherwise impossible for words. This practice is called as floriography or the language of flowers. Floriography was a Victorian-era means of communication in which various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken. Send flower gifts philippines through online flower shops.

Today, the use of this practice is mainly traditional, such as with professing with a bouquet of red roses. Red roses, in floriography, symbolize love and respect. Red roses also became popular as the symbol of Valentine's Day, particularly because of its red color, which is usually associated with the color of the heart. Through floriography, a new tradition and practice was born. But what has happened to this language?

The language of flowers have been mostly forgotten, not for the red roses anyway. The use of red roses in professing one's love is still very popular, such as the use of pink roses which signifies a lesser affection. Other than love, flowers have also been used in other events in which words aren't enough to express one's feelings.

Funerals have also been site for flowers to be given as a gift. This is because, like the use of red roses for conveying one's love, flowers are also used as a way to symbolize one's respect for the dead as well as expressing condolence. Popular flowers for funerals are usually orchids, marigold, as well as the use of aloe. In the Philippines, the use of the Kalachuchi flower for funerals have also been very popular.

Although the practice of floriography have been widely forgotten, the tradition of giving flowers as a way for a man to express his love for a woman still lives on, even if the flower isn't the traditional red rose used in floriography.
