GIA, or the Gemological Institute of America, was established in 1931. This nonprofit organization is the primary authority on diamonds. Their name has become synonymous with honesty and integrity throughout the gem world. GIA’s purpose is to educate the public on gemstones. In addition they provide a quality rating system to evaluate all gems, including diamonds.

GIA’s Mission

GIA was developed to provide the public with a trustworthy organization that could properly grade and rate all gemstones. GIA actually created the 4 Cs of cut, clarity, color and weight (carat) as well as the International Diamond Grading System TM. These grading systems are used and recognized by every jeweler and gemstone dealer around the world.

GIA Loose Diamonds

When a diamond has been cut and polished it is then sent to GIA before being offered for sale. GIA loose diamonds are rated using the D-Z colour scale, the I3 clarity scale and the carat or weight scale. GIA returns all the diamonds it grades with a certificate showing the grading of the stone. Purchasing GIA Loose Diamonds is like betting on a sure thing. The buyer knows exactly how flawless the diamond is and where the faults are once it has been analyzed by GIA.

Advantages of Purchasing a GIA Loose Diamond

When someone purchases a GIA loose diamond they know, without a doubt, what they are purchasing. A certificate from GIA accompanies the diamond and explains all aspects of its quality. GIA loose diamonds are guaranteed not to have any fractures that have been artificially filled. In addition the buy can be sure they are not purchasing a synthetic diamond.

All reputable jewelers sell GIA loose diamonds. Before making a purchase ask if the diamond is GIA certified. Keep in mind that diamonds below ½ carat are very rarely certified by GIA. If the jeweler cannot produce a certificate, move on and find a more trusting jewelry store. Never purchase a diamond or other gemstone without a GIA certification.
